Book Synopsis The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide by : Yogesh Dwivedi
Download or read book The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide written by Yogesh Dwivedi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With recent studies using genetic, epigenetic, and other molecular and neurochemical approaches, a new era has begun in understanding pathophysiology of suicide. Emerging evidence suggests that neurobiological factors are not only critical in providing potential risk factors but also provide a promising approach to develop more effective treatment and prevention strategies. The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide discusses the most recent findings in suicide neurobiology. Psychological, psychosocial, and cultural factors are important in determining the risk factors for suicide; however, they offer weak prediction and can be of little clinical use. Interestingly, cognitive characteristics are different among depressed suicidal and depressed nonsuicidal subjects, and could be involved in the development of suicidal behavior. The characterization of the neurobiological basis of suicide is in delineating the risk factors associated with suicide. The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide focuses on how and why these neurobiological factors are crucial in the pathogenic mechanisms of suicidal behavior and how these findings can be transformed into potential therapeutic applications.

Book Synopsis Genetics for Healthcare Professionals by : Heather Skirton
Download or read book Genetics for Healthcare Professionals written by Heather Skirton and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetics is increasingly important in health care provision, but its relevance on a day-to-day basis is often poorly understood. Genetics for Healthcare Professionals introduces the general principles of genetics and links these to real world examples, to allow nurses, midwives, genetic counselors and doctors to apply this knowledge in their routine clinical practice. The book takes an holistic family-oriented approach, from preconception to adulthood, and addresses the misconception that clinical genetics is only of relevance to those who are reproducing. Genetics for Healthcare Professionals is an essential textbook of genetics for nurses, midwives, genetic counselors and doctors. An ideal coursebook for students in the healthcare professions, it is also written for qualified staff seeking an update on current issues and how to apply them in practice.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Modern Genetics by : C. H. Waddington
Download or read book An Introduction to Modern Genetics written by C. H. Waddington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1939 (second impression in 1950), this book provides an account of the changes in, and main principles of, genetics at that time. These are illustrated by references to the most authoritative and then recent investigations. Special attention is paid to the way in which genetics overlaps with other fields of inquiry, since it is often in these border-line subjects that the most important advances are to be expected. The book is particularly arranged to suit the convenience of students whose previous knowledge of genetics is small, and contains annotated bibliographies of suggestions for further reading.
Book Synopsis The Family Planning Association and Contraceptive Science and Technology in Mid-Twentieth-Century Britain by : Natasha Szuhan
Download or read book The Family Planning Association and Contraceptive Science and Technology in Mid-Twentieth-Century Britain written by Natasha Szuhan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first in-depth investigation into the relationship between the National Birth Control Association, later the Family Planning Association, and contraceptive science and technology in the pre-Pill era. It explores the Association’s role in designing and supporting scientific research, employment of scientists, engagement with manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies, and use of its facilities, patients, staff, medical, scientific, and political networks to standardise and guarantee contraceptive technology it prescribed and produced. By taking a micro-history approach to the archives of the Association, this book highlights the importance of this organisation to the history of science, technology, and medicine in twentieth-century Britain. It examines the Association’s participation within Western family planning networks, working particularly closely with its American counterparts to develop chemical and biological means of testing contraception for efficacy, quality, and safety.

The majority of them deals with the development of medicine and life sciences as well as the national research promotion under the Nazi regime and during World War II. Studies on human experiments of French, Japanese, and US-American research enlarge the perspective on a problem of obviously international range. These empirical studies are supplemented by articles on the legal evaluation of this behaviour of scientists, as well as on the resulting movement to formulate binding transnational ethical codes on behalf of human experiments.
