Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chamber Music of Johannes Brahms The sketch of Brahms' life and character includes only such events as might reasonably have influenced his music. The analysis of the principal characteristics of his music is given with the full appreciation of the impossibility of demonstration. Brahms' complete works have been tabulated in groups, so arranged as to enable those wishing to per form them, to see at a glance which are adapted to the performers available. Following the tabulation is an attempt to point out the technical features of Brahms' music which distinguish it from that of other composers. This has been the most interesting part of the work. It is a subject as to some features of which all will probably agree. As to others, however, one may expect and hope for a delightful and stimulating difference of Opinion among persons whose views are the most respected. For the benefit of those wishing to make a further study of Brahms' life and works, a summary is given of the principal bibliography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brahms Norma fantasia, and at the second a duet by the same popular virtuoso with Frau meyer-david, the concert giver. Nearly a year afterwards, on 21 September, 1848, he gave a concert of his own, at which he played a fugue of Bach, besides other things more suited to the taste of that day. On 14 April, 1849, he gave another concert, playing the Waldstein sonata of Beethoven, some popular pieces, and a fantasia by himself on a favourite waltz. After this formal opening of his career as an executant, he had to endure the drudgery of playing night after night in dancing saloons. During the next five years his life must have been a hard one, and perhaps some of the necessary bread of tears was eaten at this time. Various small engagements, one of which was that of accompanist behind the scenes of the Stadt Theater, and teaching (at the high fee of about a shilling a lesson) occupied him, and in his spare time he read voraciously, poetry turning itself, half consciously, into music in his brain. Many songs were composed at this period of his life, when he was compelled, like Wagner, to do hack-work for publishers in the way of arrangements and transcriptions, operatic and otherwise; these were published under the pseudonym of G. W. Marks, and it would seem as though another nom de plume, Karl Wiirth, was kept for work of a more ambitious kind, such as duet for piano and Violoncello, and a trio for piano and strings, which were played at a private concert on 5 July, 1851, and duly announced on the programme as the work of Karl Wiirth a copy of the programme is still in existence on which Brahms has substituted in pencil his true name for the other.
