Research from multiple scientific fields suggests that women veterans have unique issues from health (both mentally and physically) to basic hierarchy of needs in a society that continues to perceive veterans as men. This has hindered the lack of care, acknowledgement, services, and respect that women veterans receive or expect over time. ¶ Purpose: To further understand the challenges of women veterans as described by key veteran informants, social workers, and other providers that work with women veterans and also to gather recommendations from them on what can be done to further address those challenges. ¶ Methods: Qualitative interviews were conducted with social workers and other providers to obtain knowledge about the experiences women veterans encounter after they return home with unmet needs, and develop recommendations for improving services. ¶ Results: Based on the variety of participants, there is a gamut of recommendations of how women veterans can be helped, what needs to be done, and a lack of understanding of the underlying issues that female veterans have faced and will face. Themes included: 1). Common experiences of women veterans: trauma-PTSD, Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and social bias; 2). Coming Home - challenges in services and assistance provided: dealing with Veterans Affairs, non-gender specific programming, and lack of education by providers; 3). What works: stand-alone sites, gender specific and responsive services, follow-up services, and peer to peer; and, 4). More needs to be done. ¶ Discussion/Conclusion: Suggestions included peer to peer services, transforming the VA Hospitals to recognize the need for gender specific care, providers understanding the transitions women have made throughout the many years they have served with and alongside males, and perhaps the creation of a program prior to service discharge to support women veterans. Based on the information gathered, more research should be done on a larger scale.

As women veterans increase in number and reintegrate to civilian society, their challenges are becoming more apparent in the civilian community. Despite the presence of Veterans Affairs and other non-profit organizations effort to moderate these challenges by improving efforts to address barriers that may impede women veterans from accessing services or resources, it seems that the availability of resources and services are not enough to minimize reintegration challenges for women veterans which emanate from intrapersonal problems such as loss of identity, impaired sense of belonging, and shame or unworthiness. These intrapersonal problems may be the reason women veterans experience disempowerment in their community or avoid seeking help in the reintegration process. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to examine the underlying problems in the reintegration processes that affect women veterans' struggles, then supplement the gaps in services through social support in a support group format.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to describe the lived experience of female veterans who utilized religiosity/spirituality as a coping strategy to deal with challenges faced while reintegrating back to civilian life. Currently most research that looks at the reintegration process of veterans focus on male veterans and are quantitative in nature. This study sought to take a closer look at female veterans and their reintegration experiences, and how their use of religiosity or spirituality impacted challenges faced. The research question to frame this study was: What is the impact of religiosity/spirituality on the civilian reintegration of female veterans. The theories guiding this study were Schlossberg (1981) model of human transition, and religion and spirituality as viewed by humanistic psychology and as a protective factor. Data was collected from twelve female veterans using semi-structure interviews. Data analysis for this study utilized Moustakas' four step process for data analysis. From the data analysis five themes emerged: being a female in the military is different, leaving one culture moving into another, adapting to a new culture faced with new challenges, building resiliency through faith, and faith is key. Each of these themes were directly connected and answered the central research question for this study. The research findings support the usefulness of religiosity and spirituality in helping female veterans cope with reintegration challenges, while also helping them gain a greater capacity to cope with life stressors.

In addition, women warriors have actively participated in every military conflict and campaign since that war, sometimes even in disguise as men out of pure patriotism. Women have been wounded as well as killed on American soil and on foreign battlefields. The number of females that have volunteered to fight alongside their male counterparts while serving in support and combat operations continues to grow. Almost 280,000 women have served Post-9/11 in Afghanistan and Iraq (Disabled American Veterans 2). Although they have been exposed to many of the same combat stressors, women have been impacted in different ways than their male counterparts. When these female veterans return home some are faced with challenges such as polytrauma, family reintegration issues, lack of caretaker support, mental health concerns, body disfigurement and obstacles with developing resiliency. This thesis will address these issues through my personal account and/or through my experiences as an expert in the field of women veterans' advocacy. The approach is conversational in tone. As I educate my readers on the issues that female combat veterans face and the solutions to addressing these problems, it is vital for my readers first to get to know me and get acquainted with my story. My personal story is interwoven throughout this paper. Through my story, you will better understand my passion and drive for advocating for the betterment of how we treat our female warriors returning home from the battlefield. There have been some gains by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) since my retirement. However, much more work needs to be done to address the challenges that female veterans face every single day. Discussing these issues, statistics and solutions are important in developing policies that can positively impact the lives of female veterans.

Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Our overarching goal is to document existing gaps in federal programs and services and spur policy changes to fill them. Although women in uniform have long served with honor and courage in combat environments, changes in Department of Defense (DoD) policy have now opened military occupational specialties previously closed to them, presenting a new series of challenges for women veterans. As women complete their military service and begin their transitions home, they embark on a journey. As vividly depicted in this report, the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs (VA) and Labor (DoL) are also on an unfinished journey themselves in terms of fostering and adapting programs and policies to support women service members returning to civilian life. These and other federal agencies must work collaboratively if women are to have timely and seamless access to high quality medical care, mental health programs and a full array of readjustment benefits. This report details programs throughout the federal government that desperately need adaptation to better assist women veterans achieve educational goals, secure employment, and achieve successful careers. We believe the recommendations in this report can help women who served make a smoother transition home to reestablish their relationships with children, spouses, extended families, friends, employers and communities. The stories and statistics that support this report make clear that women veterans face a homecoming that is remarkably different than their male counterparts. As a nation we need to fully recognize their contributions and sacrifices, we owe them this respect and opportunity to heal and successfully transition home.

Book excerpt: As issues of gender inequality in the military are addressed, women will continue to fill jobs traditionally occupied by men, and ultimately take on a greater percentage of leadership responsibility. For these reasons, women will remain the fastest growing population within our active duty forces. An increased need for research, advocacy, and resources for programs and services designed specifically for women veterans is necessary in order to prepare for an upsurge in the numbers of women who will be seeking services in the years to come. This research utilized a feminist ethnographic approach for data collection and analysis. Data was collected using mixed methods consisting of an online survey (n=915), telephone interviews with women veterans and community reintegration specialists (n=31), and participant observation at veteran focused events. This study provides an in depth understanding of US women veterans experiences both in the military and after, emphasizing the different gendered experiences of participants. Among the many findings, I conclude that women veterans negotiated and performed gender in a way that worked for them within the professional militarized environments that they were a part of. However, upon leaving the military, many experience challenges associated with having to renegotiate gender, often times in civilian workplace settings where traditional aspects of masculinity and femininity are still upheld as societal norms. This research is meant to contribute to a growing body of literature on veteran transition and help fill the existing gap in anthropology of the military on the intersections of gender, gendered role-making, and military service. It will be of interest to lawmakers, policy experts, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and community stakeholders tasked with identifying the short-term and long-term challenges affecting women veterans as they enter civilian life after service, and how to appropriately tailor programs and services to meet the needs of the population.

Book excerpt: The United States military service members dedicate a period of their lives, some their entire life, to protecting and upholding the United States Constitution. While the United States military service members go through many transitions throughout their military career, all but their transition to civilian life include mentors and have a step-by-step action plan or checklist to prepare them for their next position or move. Often, female Veterans and their needs during reintegration into civilian life are overlooked. The purpose of this research study aimed to examine the relationships between perceived stress, satisfaction with life, and reintegration into civilian life for United States female Veterans. The study utilized feminist theory through the critical theory lens and relational-cultural theory (RCT). Data was collected through an anonymous, online survey via SurveyMonkey. The sample consisted of 155 female Veterans. Feminist theory and RCT focus on connections and relationships that guided this study to find whether relationships between female Veterans' reintegration into civilian life were perceived with stress and their level of satisfaction with life. The results indicated that United States female Veterans struggle with reintegration into civilian life with increased perceived stress and reduced feelings of satisfaction with their lives. Based on the research results from this study, additional research is recommended. Future research would benefit from utilizing a mixed-method approach incorporating qualitative and quantitative methods to better understand female Veterans' unique needs.

Book excerpt: While women have played critical roles in the military since the American Revolution, they were not offered veteran status until the last few decades. The concept of a female veteran is relatively new, and one that many female service members have not recognized themselves. The current study examined the factors impacting female service members' ability to construct a veteran identity following their separation from the military. The study also investigated whether the female service members' veteran identity influenced their preference and use of Veteran Health Administration (VA) hospitals and clinics, and how well they reintegrated back into civilian society after their service. This study used a mixed-method design that included a descriptive statistical survey and a correlational analysis of 128 women veteran participants. The study found a positive correlation between women's veteran identity and preference of VA health care services. However, the findings did not support the hypothesis that women's veteran identity is negatively correlated with reintegration. Further ancillary analyses were conducted in order to gain additional information on variables that may influence women's veteran identity, use of VA services, and reintegration.
