Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges and strengths bilingual social workers encounter in providing services to monolingual Spanish speaking clients. A qualitative exploratory approach, content analysis, was used in this research project. A non-probability snowball sampling method of 10 bilingual social workers whom serve monolingual Spanish speaking clients participated in this exploratory study. Three themes emerged: (1) linguistic barrier, (2) the lack of cultural competency; and (3) clients' personalism. Implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.
