This comprehensive and lavishly illustrated volume provides a survey of over 3260 hoards of Iron Age and Roman coins found in England and Wales with a detailed analysis and discussion. Theories of hoarding and deposition and examined, national and regional patterns in the landscape settings of coin hoards presented, together with an analysis of those hoards whose findspots were surveyed and of those hoards found in archaeological excavations. It also includes an unprecedented examination of the containers in which coin hoards were buried and the objects found with them. The patterns of hoarding in Britain from the late 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD are discussed. The volume also provides a survey of Britain in the 3rd century AD, as a peak of over 700 hoards are known from the period from AD 253–296. This has been a particular focus of the project which has been a collaborative research venture between the University of Leicester and the British Museum funded by the AHRC. The aim has been to understand the reasons behind the burial and non-recovery of these finds. A comprehensive online database (https://finds.org.uk/database) underpins the project, which also undertook a comprehensive GIS analysis of all the hoards and field surveys of a sample of them.

Book excerpt: Volume II now extends coverage of the Imperial series from Nerva, the 'thirteenth Caesar' and first of the 'Adoptive' emperors, down to the overthrow of the Severan dynasty in 235. It encompasses what may justifiably be termed the 'golden age' of the Roman imperial coinage. The full development of the Augustan system of coin denomination and perfection of the method by which government propaganda was communicated to the citizenry through the medium of coinage both reached their peak during these fourteen decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating the rich heritage of archaeology and of archaeological research in Hertfordshire, the 15 papers collected in this work focus on various aspects of the region, including the Neolithic to the post-Medieval periods, and include a report on the important excavations at the formative henge at Norton. Several chapters focus new attention on the Iron Age and Roman periods, both from a landscape perspective and through detailed studies of artefacts, while a discussion of the rare early Saxon material recently excavated at Watton at Stone makes a vital contribution to the existing corpus of knowledge about this little-understood period. All of the papers in the volume focus on the local scene with an understanding of wider issues in each period and as a result, the papers are of importance beyond the boundaries of the county and will be of interest to scholars with wide-ranging interests.
Book Synopsis The Snettisham Roman Jeweller's Hoard by : Catherine Johns
Download or read book The Snettisham Roman Jeweller's Hoard written by Catherine Johns and published by British Museum Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman treasure found in 1985 at Snettisham, Norfolk, consists of a collection of silver jewellery, coins, engraved gemstones and scrap silver carefully packed into a small pottery jar and hidden for safe-keeping in the middle of the second century AD. It was evidently part of the stock of a local jeweller's workshop, and as such is so far unique in the Roman world. This catalogue, illustrated throughout, brings together a team of expert contributors from the British Museum and elsewhere to produce an authoritative account of the treasure. The hoard as a whole has proved exceptionally informative, demonstrating the close association between silver- and gold-smiths and gem-engravers and confirming that silver coins were hoarded and used to make jewellery. Although of a modest quality when compared with the many gold ornaments which survive from the period, the range of types found within a single workshop at one point in time provides a new and sounder basis for the close dating of other finds of provincial Roman jewellery.

Book Synopsis The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure by : Peter S. W. Guest
Download or read book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure written by Peter S. W. Guest and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in 1992, the Hoxne Treasure is perhaps the richest cache of gold and silver coins, jewellery and tableware from the entire Roman world. The core of this volume is the catalogue of the 15,000 late 4th- and early 5th-century gold and silver coins, together with an in-depth discussion of the production and supply of late Roman coinage. Hoxne's silver coins are particularly interesting, and the book also contains ground-breaking discussions of the silver content of Roman currency as well as of the peculiarly British phenomena of coin clipping and copying. The value of the Hoxne Treasure in shedding light on an otherwise dark period of British history also calls for a broader, non-numismatic perspective, and the volume includes an important chapter dealing with the social significance of precious metals in the later Roman empire, particularly their role in the gift-exchange networks that defined and maintained late Roman imperial society.
