Book Synopsis Fog on the Central California Coast for 1973 by : John William Beardsley
Download or read book Fog on the Central California Coast for 1973 written by John William Beardsley and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface visibility data for selected stations on the central California coast in 1973 are analyzed. Radiosonde data from Oakland for the same period are used to derive meteorological indices. The year is divided into fog-related seasons, summer and winter, based on fog occurrence on the coast; and the seasonal and daily fluctuations of the indices are examined. A fog development model for the summer is formulated and compared to actual fog cases. In the winter, with far fewer coastal fog observations, the frequent occurrence of frontal passages prevents a standard development model from being formulated and compared. Four Oakland soundings are compared with four radiosondes taken at NPS Monterey, and the Oakland Soundings are found to closely approximate coastal conditions on these days. (Author).
Book Synopsis California Coastal Low Clouds by : Rachel E. Schwartz
Download or read book California Coastal Low Clouds written by Rachel E. Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low coastal stratiform clouds (stratus, stratocumulus, and fog), referred to here as coastal low cloudiness (CLC), are a persistent seasonal feature of continental west coasts, including California. The importance of CLC ranges across fields, with applications ranging from solar resource forecasting, growth of endemic species, and heat wave expression and related health impacts. This dissertation improves our understanding of California's summertime CLC by describing its variability and influences on a range of scales from multidecadal to daily and continental to local. A novel achievement is the development of a new 19-year satellite-derived low cloud record. Trained on airport observations, this high resolution record plays a critical role in the description of CLC at finer spatial and shorter timescales. Observations at coastal airports from Alaska to southern California reveal coherent interannual to interdecadal variation of CLC. The leading mode of CLC variability, accounting for nearly 40% of the total variance, and the majority of individual airports, exhibit decreasing low cloudiness from 1950 to 2012. The coherent patterns of CLC variability are organized by North Pacific Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies, linked to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The new satellite-derived low cloud retrieval reveals, in rich spatial texture, considerable variability in CLC within May-September. The average maximum cloudiness moves northward along the coast, from northern Baja, Mexico to northern California, from May to early August. Both component parts of lower tropospheric stability (LTS), SST and free-troposphere temperature, control this seasonal movement. The peak timing of cloudiness and daytime maximum temperatures are most closely aligned in northern California. On weather timescales, daily CLC anomalies are most strongly related to stability anomalies to the north (climatologically upwind) of the CLC region. CLC is strongly linked to stability in northern (southern) California throughout (only in early) summer. Atmospheric rather than oceanic processes are responsible for the cloud dependence on stability at daily timescales. The spatial offset of the LTS-CLC relationship reveals the roles of advective processes, subsidence, and boundary layer characteristics. Free-tropospheric moisture additionally impacts CLC, implicating the North American monsoon as a factor affecting southern California's coastal climate in late summer.

Book Synopsis The Life Cycle of California Coastal Fog Onshore by : C. William Rogers
Download or read book The Life Cycle of California Coastal Fog Onshore written by C. William Rogers and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life cycle of California coastal fog was investigated by examining visibility, temperature, and wind data obtained on a 56 m tower in 10 fog occurrences at Vandenberg AFB in July 1972. The Vandenberg radiosonde data showed that fog did not form when the base of the large scale subsidence inversion was located 400 m or more above the earth's surface. Fog formed at the surface as the base of the oceanic stratus cloud lowered in response to net long wave radiational cooling at the cloud top after sunset.

Multisensor Observations of Fog and Analysis of Mesoscale and Radiosonde Data Provide Evidence that Radiational Cooling from the Top of Stratus Clouds is a Significant Process Leading to Fog Formation and that Mesoscale Variability of Fog Producing Mechanisms is Great written by V. R. Noonkester and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many fog events have been observed at the coast of San Diego during the presence of a stratus-cloud deck using a set of remote (eg, FM-CW radar and acoustic echosounder) and direct (eg, radiosondes) atmospheric sensors. The sensor observations and analysis of mesoscale and radiosonde data provide evidence that radiational cooling from the top of the stratus clouds is a significant process leading to fog formation and that mesoscale variability of fog producing mechanisms is considerable.
