This book addresses this phenomenon, maintaining that the Arab state functions according to a certain ‘logic’ and ‘patterns’ which have direct consequences on its gender policies, in both the public and private spheres. Using the features of the Arab Authoritarian state as a basis for a theoretical framework of analysis, the author draws on detailed fieldwork and first-hand interviews to study women’s rights in three countries - Yemen, Syria, and Kuwait. She argues that the puzzle may be resolved once we focus on the features of the Arab state, and its stage of development. Rather than assuming the relationship between Beat writers and institutions of higher education was only a hostile one, The Beats and the Academy begins with the premise that influence between the two flows in both directions. Beat writers' suspicion of established institutions was a significant aspect of their postwar countercultural allure. Their anti-establishment aesthetic and countercultural stance led Beat writers to be critical of postwar academic institutions that tended to dismiss them as a passing social phenomenon. Even today, Beat writing still meets resistance in an academy that questions the relevance of their writing and ideas. But this picture, like any generalization, is far too easy. The Beat relationship to the academy is one of negotiation, rather than negation. Many Beats strove for academic recognition, and quite a few received it. And despite hostility to their work both in the postwar era and today, Beat works have made it into syllabi, conference resentations, journal articles, and monographs. We discarded some of the old ways of doing things, and we opened the door to a brand-new and modern civilization in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. The sexual and cultural revolution led us to secularism, which challenged many draconian mores, including those in Muslim countries such as Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Iran, Tunisia, and Morocco. That was when I published one of my books, Sociology of Religion: Changing Conceptions in the Structure of Islam. However, in relatively recent times, we have faced the backward process of reverting to traditional norms. That reversed cultural change led to fundamentalism, including fundamentalism in religion, which is a precursor to addiction to religion. That has ultimately resulted in national and international terrorism. That born-again trend encouraged me to do research in this field, including addiction to religion. That led me to write this book. I have concluded in this book that both addiction to drugs and addiction to religion are a disease, a delirium, and a psychic syndrome influenced by a mental disorder. During the last two to three decades, there has been a significant rise in religious fundamentalism leading to addiction to religion, which has caused global havoc. Religion has been hijacked, misused, and abused, largely by semiliterate believers in all organized religions. Religious addiction is perhaps worse than drug addiction. Other books by the Author 1.
