Book Synopsis Commentary on the Book of Causes by : Saint Thomas (Aquinas)
Download or read book Commentary on the Book of Causes written by Saint Thomas (Aquinas) and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas's Commentary on the Book of Causes, composed during the first half of 1272, offers an extended view of his approach to Neoplatonic thought and functions as a guide to his metaphysics. Though long neglected and, until now, never translated into English, it deserves an equal place alongside his commentaries on Aristotle and Boethius. In addition to the extensive annotation, bibliography, and thorough introduction, this translation is accompanied by two valuable appendices. The first provides a translation of another version of proposition 29 of the Book of Causes, which was not known to St. Thomas. The second lists citations of the Book of Causes found in the works of St. Thomas and cross-references these to a list showing the works, and the exact location within them, where the citations can be found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Proclus and the Book of Causes, published in three volumes, is a fresh, comprehensive understanding of the history of Neoplatonism from the 9th to the 16th century. The impact of the Elements of Theology and the Book of Causes is reconsidered on the basis of newly discovered manuscripts and evidences. This second volume revises widely accepted hypotheses about the reception of the Proclus’ text in Byzantium and the Caucasus, and about the context that made possible the composition of the Book of Causes and its translations into Latin and Hebrew. The contributions offer a unique, comparative perspective on the various ways a pagan author was acculturated to the Abrahamic traditions.

Book excerpt: MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA Recently, we conducted a research on a group of meditators, to study the changes in their body elements. The study was done in collaboration with American scientists, and it was discovered that after about three weeks of practicing meditation, their blood pressure had decreased, mind became clearer and calmer and it further reduced stress. There are many aspects of brain that are new to us and are yet to be explored. It is in fact very important to practice meditation to literally change our brain. We must be able to prove scientifically that love and compassion are necessities to maintain physical and mental wellbeing at both individual and social level. Modern science deals mainly with brain, leaving aside the aspect of ‘mind’. It is important to make efforts towards cultivation of moral ethics that is directly associated with mental aspect. In the ancient times, there was no connection between spirituality and science. Now we are all aware of the significance of the mental aspect, and we need to analyze and conduct scientific studies on the subject of consciousness. In Tibetan Monastic communities, there have been cases where certain realized practitioners were clinically declared dead but their bodies remained fresh for several days without any decomposition. There was a case in which the body of a monk who was declared brain dead not only remained fresh but also gained strength a couple of days after death. These cases need to be studied thoroughly, and in the course of analysis, the findings of the investigation and research as the fundamental principle must be embraced. Above is an excerpt from His Holiness’s address at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science in the capital of Uttar Pradesh state on the occasion of the 58th annual conference of the Neurological Society of India. His Holiness spoke on “Brain science and ancient Indian Buddhist thought”.

Book Synopsis Thinking about Causes by : Peter Machamer
Download or read book Thinking about Causes written by Peter Machamer and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging as a hot topic in the mid-twentieth century, causality is one of the most frequently discussed issues in contemporary philosophy. Causality has been a central concept in philosophy as well as in the sciences, especially the natural sciences, dating back to its beginning in Greek thought. David Hume famously claimed that causality is the cement of the universe. In general terms, it links eventualities, predicts the consequences of action, and is the cognitive basis for the acquisition and the use of categories and concepts in the child. Indeed, how could one answer why-questions, around which early rational thought begins to revolve, without hitting on the relationships between reason and consequence, cause and effect, or without drawing these distinctions? But a comprehensive definition of causality has been notoriously hard to provide, and virtually every aspect of causation has been subject to much debate and analysis.Thinking About Causes brings together top philosophers from the United States and Europe to focus on causality as a major force in philosophical and scientific thought. Topics addressed include: ancient Stoicism and moral philosophy; the case of sacramental causality; traditional causal concepts in Descartes; Kant on transcendental laws; the influence of J. S. Mill's politics on his concept of causation; plurality in causality; causality in modern physics; causality in economics; and the concept of free will.Taken together, the essays in this collection from the Pittsburgh -Konstanz series provide the best current thinking about causality, especially as it relates to the philosophy of science.
