Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catskill Mountains, Pine Hill and Summit Mountain First - As TO the region, and its special attractions and advantages - Every frequented locality, both of the Northern and Southern Catskills, has much to commend it to the tourist and the Summer sojourner. But, after considerable experience and a fair knowledge of other sections, my judgment is clear that no other region combines so many advantages as the vicinity of Pine Hill and the Summit Mountain, in the vital matters of pure atmosphere, of widely extended, richly diversified and beautiful views, and of variety in the means of invigoration and enjoyment. For purity of atmosphere it cannot be sur passed, since it lies in the heart of the mountain mass, so that the breezes from every quarter sweep over twenty to thirty miles of lofty and wooded hills. A simple statement as to the relative position of the included and outlying hills will indicate the character of the views and the variety of possible excursions. The hill above and west of the Village, which has many stumps of the great pines that gave name to the place, is itself an extended spur of the Belle Ayr Mountain. At its lowest elevation, where the railroad passes, it is feet; it then rises into Summit Mountain, feet above the sea level. Both Hill and Mountain form a watershed, dividing the small streams, which find their way on either side to the distant Delaware or the nearer Hudson. The Summit Mountain, too, less than three-quarters of a mile in length by an eighth in breadth, stands entirely apart. In a quadrangle of loftier mountains, affording from its top a view of almost unequalled beauty, reaching, with unintercepted vision, from five to twenty miles in every direcuon. More than this, its peculiar position in relation to the deep valleys on either side, together With the many diverse lines and angles of eight dis tinct mountain masses, outlying in as many directions, change the view at almost every step, holding an appreciative observer in a constant charm and as the grouping of hill, and vale, and mountain is thus alwavs shifting, the corresponding harmonious changes of light and shadow in the sky add their varied beauty to the vision. Beside the many easily accessible hill-points, with their attraction, there are brook-courses, and shaded ravines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catskill Mountains The best time to start for the country and how long to remain are among the details which must always be governed largely by circum stances. Oi late the tendency has been to leave the city early in sum mer and remain late in autumn. Thus the vacation season, in the mountains at least, has been materially extended. Surely the country is never more lovely than it is in June, and James Russell Lowell's famous challenge, made nearly thirty years ago, What is so rare as a day in June? Is yet unanswered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catskill Mountains and the Region Around: Their Scenery, Legends, and History; With Sketches in Prose and Verse, by Cooper, Irving, Bryant, Cole, and Others Early in the year 1860, the writer, or more properly, perhaps, the compiler of this work, was led, by professional duty, and the healthful climate of the mountains, to make his home in a place of peculiar and romantic beauty, on one of the lower cliffs of the Catskill range, directly in front of the high projection on which the Mountain House stands. Parochial visits, funerals, weddings, and excursions with friends from abroad, led to peculiar familiarity with scenes, objects and events of interest, in and near the mountains, as also with historical and traditionary matter, of permanent value, and importance. Events of early Indian and pioneer history were also met with, connected with war, captivity, and patriotic martyrdom, recorded only in early newspapers, manuscripts and pamphlets, rare, difficult to be found, and so worn and torn by long and frequent reading, as to have well-nigh passed away. Book excerpt: An ultrarunner’s fast-paced narrative into the wilds of New York’s Hudson Valley, as he attempts to set a new record for completing the Long Path, a 350-mile hiking trail that links New York City and Albany. Have you ever considered running 350 miles in nine days? Kenneth A. Posner did just that when he completed a record-setting run along New York’s Long Path, a 350-mile hiking trail that stretches from New York City to Albany. Running the Long Path’s page-turning narrative combines the thrill and challenges of Posner’s extreme endurance feat with the stunning natural beauty and deep historical significance of New York’s Hudson Valley. A one-time casual runner, Posner shares his excitement of developing into a trail-runner and eventually an ultrarunner, as well as the pursuit of a “fastest known time”—a new dimension of extreme trail running, where some of the sport’s fastest and most experienced athletes vie to set new speed records for important trails. Hikers, walkers, and runners will appreciate his detailed descriptions of planning, pacing, gear selection, nutrition, hydration, and navigation, which will help them prepare for their own adventures on the trails. Interspersed with the running adventure, Posner relates the interesting stories of the Long Path and the places it passes through, which include some of New York’s most important parks and preserves and the distinctive mountains and forests they protect. Throughout the book, he channels the voices of famous New Yorkers associated with the Long Path—Walt Whitman, John Burroughs, Theodore Roosevelt, and Raymond Torrey—who express their appreciation of the natural beauty of the region. Running the Long Path is the story of what ordinary people can accomplish with a little determination and a lot of grit. Whether you walk or run, you will find inspiration in Posner’s tale. An experienced ultrarunner, Kenneth A. Posner is the author of Stalking the Black Swan: Research and Decision Making in a World of Extreme Volatility. He lives in New York City and works as chief of strategic planning and investor relations at Capital Bank Financial Corp.
