Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church in Russia Today This is just one little word about the general aim of this book, which is not meant to be controversial. The Catholics in Russia fully realise from the outset that if anything is to be achieved at all, they must work in the spirit of love. This is the reason why those who have rallied together around our common cause remember that no malice should be borne for the sufferings of the past, no malice for the still greater sufferings of the present and for those looming ahead in the future. In the past the Catholics in Russia had a Christian Government and a Christian Church to struggle against, and the odds were then not so terrific. In the gigantic struggle of to-day more fearful forces have come into play. The Church in Russia fights not only against political enemies, but against the embodied spirits of darkness. And yet the great truth stands clear before every Russian Catholic that the gates of hell, even of the reddest of hells, cannot prevail against his Church. And this realisation is what helps him to go through everything with a stout heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. THIS is just one little word about the general aim of this book, which is not meant to be controversial. If I were called upon to use an argument with an unconvinced non-Catholic, my strongest shaft would be: Go to Russia and see how Catholics live there, and then come back and tell me whether people whose beliefs are not on the rock of truth can stand one tenth of what they endure. Russia with her tormented and tortured Catholics presents one more proof of the truth of the Catholic Faith. These proofs are surely unnecessary for Catholics, but they are sorely needed by those to whom Christianity is an empty name. And to such the few Russian Catholics would like to send their message of trust and hope, convinced, firm, unshakable through unimaginable horrors; hope in God's mercy, and trust in the faith revealed by his Church. As I write these lines, a word has reached me from the far North that many of those who shared with me the infinite joys of the inward life in God's Church are in danger of their lives on account of the Faith. I trust my readers will permit me to ask their prayers on their behalf and for the many unknown who suffer yonder for God's truth.

Drawing on her own experiences as a member of the Catholic community in Moscow, the author provides a detailed and nuanced analysis of the Church's history, structure, and role in Russian society. From the early years of Communist rule to the era of glasnost and perestroika, the book traces the challenges and triumphs of the Church in a complex and changing political landscape. With its insightful commentary and rich historical detail, this book offers a unique perspective on a little-known aspect of Catholic history. Yet few scholars have attempted to relate the study of churches and religious movements in recent centuries to the politics and culture of the Soviet Union. To remedy this deficiency, leading western experts on Christianity in the Eastern Slav lands gathered at a conference in London on the occasion of the millennium of the baptism of Rus'. Their papers present unexpected and fascinating insights into an under-rated but crucial aspect of the life of the Soviet peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique account of Russia's encounter with Catholicism from the medieval period to the present provides fascinating insights into Catholic-Russian relations. Dennis Dunn analyzes religious politics in the former USSR and in Russia, particularly in areas where relations between the state-backed Orthodox establishment and the Catholic Church have renewed debates about civil rights, religious freedom and Russian national identity under Vladimir Putin's regime. Discussing issues such as the role of Pope John Paul II in helping to bring down the Iron Curtain, Dunn argues provocatively that Catholic-Russian relations are a microcosm of Western-Russian relations and sheds new light on the historical strain between Russia and the West. Showing how Russia's adoption of a secular ideology - a vain attempt to surpass the West - alienated the Russian government not only from the Catholic Church but also from its own Orthodox foundation, this book discusses how Russia sealed its fate while precipitating the Cold War with the West. Students and general readers interested in Russian history, Western-Russian relations, Catholicism, and comparative religion more broadly, will find this an invaluable and accessible account of an important and understudied subject.

The question is likely to surprise many American Christians tempted, in spite of themselves, to believe a purely political propaganda. Russia—The Enemy—is both the historical Christian reality and the present hope. In a book of profound contemporary significance, the author has presented both a scholarly and moving history of the Church of Christ in Russia, from its beginnings to the present day, and a deeply sympathetic description of the Russian Church’s Tradition and Life. The author is herself a Russian, a scholar, and a convert from the Orthodox Church in which she was raised. She writes with simplicity and with loving familiarity of things she has not only studied but lived with her heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years now, Russia has been trying to justify her neo-imperialist policies towards Ukraine, promoting the vision of a common “Orthodox civilization,” in reference to the religious and cultural spheres. The Russian Orthodox Church is an important element of “soft power,” whose help the Kremlin authorities are seeking in conducting their policies towards the so-called “near-abroad.” Ukraine comprises an exceptionally important place in this sphere. This book analyzes the role of religion and Eastern Christian communities in Ukrainian social and political life, and the political, social, cultural and civilizational conditions for the development of religious life in Ukraine. Particular attention is focused on the problem of institutionalizing Eastern Christian communities after the collapse of the USSR. This monograph presents the conditions under which this process in post-Soviet Ukraine is carried out and the way in which it is linked to the functioning of the Ukrainian political system. This allows one to gain a new perspective on this system and capture its essence more fully. Primarily, this concerns the question of its democratic or non-democratic character. The book is an interdisciplinary research monograph, and, as such, will be useful to researchers interested in the post-Soviet space from the perspective of various disciplines, including political sciences, history, sociology and religious studies. The research and editing of the book were supported by National Science Centre Poland – grant number 2011/01/B/HS5/00911.
