Book excerpt: IF YOU STAND HERE...Pilgrims have been coming from all over the world to Spain for over 12 centuries to venerate the remains of the Apostle St. James the Greater and his two followers, Atanasio and Teodoro. The relics are housed in the crypt of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It is the largest Romanesque cathedral in Spain. This book will not focus on the exact size of the building or all the dates of all the various building programs. It will place you on the very spot in the Cathedral where something marvelous happened in the history of this extraordinary space. It will invite you to imagine the new archbishop saying Mass for the first time, the music director playing new music at the organ, or a local poet who stops in one late afternoon to say some prayers. If you stand here, you will be standing...*where the Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon watched the Botafumeiro swing in 1499, *where the Italian prince, Cosimo de Medici III entered the Cathedral in 1669, *where the poet Federico García Lorca visited with his classmates from the University of Granada in 1916, *where American writer Edith Wharton gazed at the Pórtico de la Gloria sculpture at sunset in 1925, or where the archbishop ran for his life when an angry mob set fire to the Cathedral roof in 1117. Each of these events still reverberates in the air in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela - and all you have to do to experience it is to stand here. Book excerpt: Published in the centenary year of Lewis's birth, The Pilgrim's Guide offers a study of Lewis's witness to the truth of Christianity, especially in his works of fiction and popular apologetics. Written by nineteen leading Lewis scholars and authors, these essays examine Lewis's character and the way he engaged the challenges of the Christian mind, vision, imagination, and understanding in the twentieth century. The studies range from discussions of specific Lewis works to critical interpretations of Lewis's most important theological themes. Also included is a guide to the best books and other resources on Lewis, a timeline that places Lewis's life in the context of history, and a note on the source for Lewis's use of the phrase "mere Christianity." Stages range from 8km to 30km with plenty to see, including ancient ruins, picturesque towns, national treasures, and stunning churches. This comprehensive guidebook fits in a jacket pocket or rucksack, and contains information on everything from accommodation and transport in Italy, to securing your credential (pilgrim identity card), budgeting, what to take, and where to do laundry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pilgrimage route to Compostela is graced with an exceptional witness from its early days: the Liber Sancti Jacobi or Book of Saint James. This book is found most famously in a twelfth-century manuscript from the library of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, as well as in various other manuscripts. The text provides an encyclopedia on Saint James the Great and on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the traditional site of his burial in Galicia in northwestern Spain. Of the five books included in the manuscript, Book I, the longest, contains the Sermons and Liturgy of Saint James. It is published here in English translation for the first time. It consists of two major sections: the first contains sermons and readings on Saint James, and the second presents a compendium of liturgical prose, poetry, and musical material suitable for the feasts of Saint James. Book I is accompanied here with the first full translation of the addenda that consists of material gathered subsequent to the compilation of the original five books and that was inserted at its end. The sermons and readings include works attributed to Pope Calixtus and Pope Leo, and others authored by Gregory the Great, Jerome, Bede, Eusebius, Augustine, and John Chrysostom. These sermons and readings stand as self-contained units that fit into the liturgies. The liturgical material is a compendium of readings and music for the feast days related to Saint James, including his Calling, Translatio, Passion, and Miracles. The musical pieces are the most extensive collection of musical materials dedicated to a single saint in the twelfth century. They include antiphons, responsorials, hymns, and processionals, with both older and original melodies. This book of the Liber Sancti Jacobi provides a picture of the power and importance of the saint, reflecting his significance and that of Santiago de Compostela, along with Rome and Jerusalem one of the three major Christian pilgrimage sites during the Middle Ages. 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned author of eight books and abbess of the online retreat center Abbey of the Arts, Christine Valters Paintner takes readers on a new kind of pilgrimage: an inner journey to discover the heart of God. Eight stages of the pilgrim's way--from hearing the call to coming home--are accompanied by scripture stories of great biblical journeys and the author's unique and creative practices of prayer, writing, and photography. As she did in The Artist's Rule and Eyes of the Heart, Christine Valters Paintner once again helps readers travel to the frontiers of their souls to discover the hidden presence of God. In The Soul of a Pilgrim, Paintner identifies eight stages of the pilgrim's way and shows how to follow these steps to make an intentional, transformative journey to the reader's inner "wild edges." Each phase of the exploration requires a distinct practice such as packing lightly, being uncomfortable, or embracing the unknown. Paintner shows how to cultivate attentiveness to the divine through deep listening, patience, and opening oneself to the gifts that arise in the midst of discomfort. Each of the eight chapters offers reflections on the themes, a scripture story, an invitation to the practice of lectio divina, and a creative exploration through photography and writing.

Book excerpt: Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The Cathedral, The Camino de Santiago, Travel Guide. With its beautiful historic centre, atmospheric granite streets, and a fabulous Romanesque-baroque cathedral at its heart, Santiago de Compostela is so much more than Europe's most famous pilgrimage site. Ever since medieval times, Santiago has been a holy city, and its central place of worship, the imposing Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, was allegedly built over the tomb of the apostle James. True or not, the story is enough to encourage thousands of folk from all nations and all creeds to walk, bike or ride horses hundreds of kilometres along the Way of Saint James, aka El Camino de Santiago. Each year, the goal and ambition for over 250,000 trudging pilgrims is to reach the Plaza do Obradoiro. The city's main square is surrounded by magnificent buildings, including the elegant 18th century Pazo de Raxoi (Raxoi Palace, now the town hall), and the Hostal dos Reis Católicos founded in 1492 as a pilgrims' hospice, it is now a 5 star parador (luxury hotel in a converted historic building). Pride of place, however, goes to the majestic twin towers of the magical cathedral, a jaw-dropping masterpiece of baroque architecture. But while the city's delights may begin with this inspiring building, they certainly don't end there. The old town is filled with narrow winding streets lined with historic buildings that are a delight to wander through. Having been the site of the University of Santiago de Compostela since the early 16th century, the city has a large student population and a vibrant nightlife that often continues into the early hours. The Galicia region is also famed for its seafood, and there are some excellent places to eat in Santiago, from select marisquerías to no-frills pulperías literally, octopus bars. It's all delicious, but don't leave without trying zamburiñas (mini-scallops), navajas (razor clams) and percebes (goose barnacles). Wash everything down with an excellent Galician dry white wine. Whether you're here as a pilgrim or merely as a casual observer, stunning Santiago offers everyone plenty of reasons to linger.
