Book Synopsis The Legal Architecture of English Cathedrals by : Norman Doe
Download or read book The Legal Architecture of English Cathedrals written by Norman Doe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original book is a comprehensive, richly documented and critical examination of laws applicable to Anglican cathedrals in England, some of the most iconic monuments in the national heritage and centres of spiritual and cultural capital. Law is the missing link in the emerging field of cathedral studies. The book fills this gap. It explores historical antecedents of modern cathedral law, traces aspects of them that still endure, and explains the law with particular reference to the recommendations of the Archbishops’ Commission on Cathedrals 1994 which led to the most radical changes in the legal history of these churches since the Reformation, culminating in the Cathedrals Measure 1999 and associated later legislation. The book compares the domestic constitutions and statutes of all the cathedrals of the Church of England today – old foundations, new foundations and parish church cathedrals - as well as policies and guidelines applicable to or adopted by them. Whilst national law acts as a fundamental unifying force, there is considerable diversity as between these in terms of the breadth and depth of their coverage of topics. In the socio-legal tradition, the book also explores through interviews with clergy and others, at half of the cathedrals, how laws are experienced in practice. These reveal that whilst much of the law is perceived as working well, there are equally key areas of concern. To this end, the book proposes areas for further research and debate with a view to possible reform. Taking an architectural feature of cathedrals as the starting point for each chapter, from cathedral governance through mission, ministry, music and education to cathedral property, what emerges is that law and architecture have a symbiotic relationship so that a cathedral is itself a form of juristecture.

The special features, structural systems, materials and construction technologies are analyzed, as well as how the international community deals with the task of interpreting and preserving certain historic properties. This publication provides professors and students of architecture, art history, historic preservation and related fields with an integrated view of architecture using historical, theoretical and conservation perspectives. Book excerpt: Britain is well-known for its churches and cathedrals; buildings of great architecture and religious grandeur that form many of our recognisable skylines. But these grand structures are also full of facts, histories and stories that you may not have been aware of. Did you know that there are only three cathedrals in Britain without a ringing bell? Or that St Davids Cathedral, nestled away in a Welsh valley, has a very unique choir, where the top line is sung only by female choristers, aged eight to eighteen? How about that the Great Pyramids in Egypt were the world's tallest structures for over 3,870 years, until the construction of Lincoln Cathedral in 1311? Award-wining travel writer and editor Sue Dobson takes us on a journey around the United Kingdom, showing us her highlights while providing fascinating details and stories along the way.

Download or read book Gloucestershire written by David Verey and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gloucestershire 2: The Vale and the Forest of Dean and its companion, Gloucestershire I: The Cotswolds, provide a lively and uniquely comprehensive guide to the architecture of Gloucestershire. Alan Brooks's extensively revised and expanded editions of David Verey's original volumes bring together the latest research on a county unusually rich in attractive and interesting buildings. The area covered lies on both sides of the River Severn, rising from flat alluvial lands to the lower slopes of the Cotswold Escarpment on the east and the rough wooded hills of the Forest of Dean on the Welsh border, with its distinctive industrial inheritance. Architecture is generally more varied and unpredictable than in the Cotswolds: stone, timber, brick and stucco all have local strongholds. The Vale is most famous for its two great churches, Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey, both Norman buildings with brilliantly inventive late medieval modifications. The other major settlement is the spa town of Cheltenham, with its fine parades of Regency terraces. Country houses include Thornbury Castle, greatest of Early Tudor private houses, timber-framed manors such as Preston Court, and the extravagantly Neo-Gothic Toddington; churches range from the enigmatic Anglo-Saxon pair at Deerhurst to Randall Wells's Arts-and-Crafts experiment at Kempley. Amongst the memorable post-war landmarks are the suspension bridges and nuclear power stations on the banks of the Severn, and Aztec West, one of the best British business parks, on the northern fringes of Bristol. Visitors and residents alike will find their understanding and enjoyment of west Gloucestershire transformed by this book.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The office of cathedral organist has perhaps the longest lineage of any branch of the musical profession in England and Wales, and its occupants, many of them among the leading musicians of their day, have done much to shape the character of musical life. This book establishes, cathedral by cathedral, the chronological sequence of these musicians from about the middle of the sixteenth century to the present time, with detailed references to historic archives. Where additional material is available, this is surrounded by details of each man's personality, the character of his training, work, and tenure, and also his relations with colleagues and superiors, while reference is made to any contribution to wider spheres of musical activity. This book provides material towards musical biography and some aspects of the sociology of music, and illuminates the changing conditions of cathedral musical life.
