This book was released on 1990 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as an updated version of the 1924 Delteil and Wright catalogue to incorporate Wright's extensive annotations made after publication. Schneiderman's research drew him to the conclusion that a chronological ordering rather than the hitherto accepted subject ordering, was the only viable way to follow the workings of Meryon's mind. While respecting the scholarship of Harold Wright, both in his errata and manuscript notes, examination of the actual proofs referred to has required substantial alterations, and it is in this perspective that this new catalogue has been written. Dr Schneiderman's extensive research covered all the major institutions and several private collections containing Meryon's work. The 103 etchings are listed chronologically, with each entry detailing its title and all known derivations, references to earlier catalogues, medium, size, and fate of the plate. Institutional holdings of each state are listed. There then follows a brief discussion of the subject of the print and any controversies s surrounding it. The author cites relevant comments from Burty's catalogue and any response by Meryon taken from Mes Observations and his letters. The various states, including previously uncatalogued ones, are numbered and listed noting their points of difference, any inscriptions and where the states may be found. Many of Meryon's prints were copied by later artists and where such copies may be deceptive notable differences are listed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A print can sometimes tell us more than a painting about the history of art. Michel Melot illustrates his thesis in this book, analysing relationships between artists, the art market, the critics, collectors and political institutions. This fresh approach reveals Impressionism not as a sort of miracle, but as a response to economic and social upheaval. This original view of a key movement in the history of art allows the reader to understand its decisive effect on all the subsequent generations who have contributed to maintaining the tradition of the belle epreuve.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the seven million people who visit the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris each year probably do not realize that the legendary gargoyles adorning this medieval masterpiece were not constructed until the nineteenth century. The first comprehensive history of these world-famous monsters, The Gargoyles of Notre-Dame argues that they transformed the iconic thirteenth-century cathedral into a modern monument. Michael Camille begins his long-awaited study by recounting architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s ambitious restoration of the structure from 1843 to 1864, when the gargoyles were designed, sculpted by the little-known Victor Pyanet, and installed. These gargoyles, Camille contends, were not mere avatars of the Middle Ages, but rather fresh creations—symbolizing an imagined past—whose modernity lay precisely in their nostalgia. He goes on to map the critical reception and many-layered afterlives of these chimeras, notably in the works of such artists and writers as Charles Méryon, Victor Hugo, and photographer Henri Le Secq. Tracing their eventual evolution into icons of high kitsch, Camille ultimately locates the gargoyles’ place in the twentieth-century imagination, exploring interpretations by everyone from Winslow Homer to the Walt Disney Company. Lavishly illustrated with more than three hundred images of its monumental yet whimsical subjects, The Gargoyles of Notre-Dame is a must-read for historians of art and architecture and anyone whose imagination has been sparked by the lovable monsters gazing out over Paris from one of the world’s most renowned vantage points.

Book excerpt: Due to the technological advances of the nineteenth century, an abundance of black drawing media exploded onto the market. Charcoal, conte crayon, and fabricated black chalks and crayons; fixatives; various papers; and many lifting devices gave rise to an unprecedented amount of experimentation. Indeed, innovation became the rule, as artists developed their own unique—and often experimental—processes. The exploration of black media in drawing is inextricably bound up with the exploration of black in prints, and this volume presents an integrated study that rises above specialization in one over the other. Noir brings together such diverse artists as Francisco de Goya, Maxime Lalanne, Gustave Courbet, Odilon Redon, and Georges Seurat and explores their inventive works on paper. Sidelining labels like “conservative” or “avant-garde,” the essays in this book employ all the tools that art history and modern conservation have given us, inviting the reader to look more broadly at the artists’ methods and materials. This volume accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 9 to May 15, 2016.

Book excerpt: In this study of Brassai's complete oeuvre, the author analyzes Brassai's paradoxical position between documentary realism and surrealism in the France of the 1930s. She stresses the subjects he pursued most passionately: the shadowy Paris night, urban graffiti and the nature of creative genius.
