As usual, the investigators are called on to struggle on several fronts at once: the campus of the Brugg-Windisch University of Applied Sciences, where they must cut through a thicket of intrigues, rivalries and a love affair; internally, where District Attorney Cécile Dumont picks apart their theories and insists on solid evidence; and in the local press, where journalist Steff Schwager, tortured by jealousy, vents his spleen. It helps that Nick Baumgarten has at least found happiness in his private life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic Medicine is an old medical discipline defined as “that science, which teaches the application of every branch of medical knowledge to the purpose of the law” (Alfred Swaine Taylor). Forensic Medicine deals with medical evidence not only in practice but also in research and furthermore all legal essentials in health care especially for doctors are part of teaching, training and research. Several steps in the development of Forensic Medicine can be distinguished: At first the use of medical knowledge for legal and public purposes.Secondly the compulsory medical testimony for the guidance of judges.Thirdly the professionalization as an own academic discipline. The development and existence of a speciality of Forensic Medicine depends essentially on two factors: on a sufficiently high development of the law and on a sufficiently high development of medicine. The period of professionalization of Forensic Medicine as an own academic discipline started in the 19th century, especially in Paris, Vienna, London, Edinburgh, Berlin. Since than the world has changed dramatically and we are now witnesses of a rapid, deep-rooted social cultural, legal and technological transformation. Already 40 years ago Professor Bernhard Knight wrote in a survey on legal medicine in Europe: “In all aspects of life, the exchange of information on an international level can do nothing but good and legal medicine is no exception.” This book on the History of Forensic Medicine is an approach in this direction. Forensic Medicine has a long and rich tradition since medical expertise has to face legal questions and new questions and developments raised by the society. The aim of this book is to address the state of Forensic Medicine in different countries worldwide. With contributions from Europe, China, Japan, the United States and the United Arabic Emirates.

Book excerpt: The Blood of Cuba is the true-to-life story of an innocent peasant boy, Cesar Mérez, growing up in post-revolutionary Cuba and his meteoric rise to the rank of colonel in the Cuban military. It chronicles the transformation Cesar undergoes due to the human brutality he witnesses while fighting for socialist causes in the mountains of Venezuela and the jungles of Angola. Eventually, through a twist of fate, he is exiled to the United States where his life is changed forever. At the same time, the story parallels three days in the troubled life of his unknown American half-brother, Dr. Thomas Savage. Tom is a physician living in Pennsylvania, who struggles with his inner demons and everyday family problems. Interwoven throughout the story are the lusts and loves of the two men. The reader will grow to both love and hate each of the brothers. Ultimately, after living divergent lives, fate brings the brothers together and, out of survival, they are forced to try and destroy each other.

Only a days away from an almost certain guilty verdict Travis’ lawyer hires suspended Ex-Deputy D.A. Steve Janson to try to find some overlooked clue that might keep Travis off death row. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality has dramatically increased in America, with few solutions on the horizon. Serious social inequalities persist. For example, the 14 richest Americans earned enough money from their investments in 2015 to hire two million preschool teachers (while the USA ranks low among developed countries in preschool enrollment). Following the Great Recession, the richest one percent took 116 percent of the new income gains, a statistic caused by so many middle-class Americans moving backward, many losing investments in property and experiencing interruptions in work. Author Paul Buchheit looks hopefully to solutions in a book that vividly portrays the rapidly changing inequality of American society. More Americans have become "disposable" as middle-class jobs have disappeared at an alarming rate. Buchheit presents innovative proposals that could quickly begin to reverse these trends, including a guaranteed basic income drawn from new revenues, such as a Financial Speculation Tax and a Carbon Tax. Discussing the challenges and obstacles to such measures, he finds optimism in past successes in American history. Ideal for classroom assignment, the book uniquely pairs historical events with current, real-life struggles faced by citizens, pointing to measures that can improve personal and social well-being and trust in government.

Book excerpt: Somewhere in the Australian outback, on land left to her by a late relative she never met, American photographer Erin Windsor believes a diamond mine might be waiting with the promised yield of millions of dollars in raw gems. But the old man took its location with him to the grave. Erin's not the only one in the hunt, though she's easily the least ruthless…and most vulnerable. Blood will stain the trail to a precious, well-hidden secret, and she must turn to Cole Blackburn for help or face the killing night alone. A geologist and a walking mystery with ties to powerful forces that are now Erin's enemies, Cole is a dangerous man to trust, but she has no choice. Because life is too short to throw away your dreams, no matter how treacherous the pursuit of them might be. And death is forever.

Book excerpt: The free-standing radios of the middle decades of the 20th century were invitingly rotund and proudly displayed-nothing like today's skinny televisions hidden inside "entertainment centers." Radios were the hub of the family's after-dinner activities, and children and adults gorged themselves on western-adventure series like "The Lone Ranger," police dramas such as "Calling All Cars," and the varied offerings of "The Cavalcade of America." Shows often aired two or three times a week, and many programs were broadcast for more than a decade, comprising hundreds of episodes. This book includes more than 300 program logs (many appearing in print for the first time) drawn from newspapers, script files in broadcast museums, records from NBC, ABC and CBS, and the personal records of series directors. Each entry contains a short broadcast history that includes directors, writers, and actors, and the broadcast dates and airtimes. A comprehensive index rounds out the work.
