This book was released on 2006-03-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of World War II found a devastated Poland under Soviet occupation. Many Poles--those displaced to work camps in Germany, those in German concentration and P.O.W. camps, and those still in Poland made the decision to immigrate to the United States. Their journey, however, would not be easy. The rigors of the war had affected America as well, and immigration laws were strict. Fortunately, many Polish refugees received help from the Polish American Immigration and Relief Committee (PAIRC). Founded in 1947 to help Polish citizens displaced by World War II, the committee continued its work as the postwar period became the Cold War era and Poles continued to flee the communist regime. This study of the PAIRC and its work includes both the broad history of the committee and stories of specific individuals, which add detail and lend insight into the plight of the refugees and the importance of the advocacy that the committee provided. Drawing on information from committee archives and firsthand consultations with prominent members, this book covers such topics as American immigration law, aid for the Polish Republic, and the effect of political change in Poland itself. It also discusses how the downfall of the communist government transformed Poland into a country that opened its own arms to the world's refugees.

Download or read book The Strange Odyssey of Poland's National Treasures, 1939-1961 written by Gordon Swoger and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strange Odyssey of Poland’s National Treasures, 1939-1961 tells the story of the Polish national treasures –their evacuation from their homeland under perilous conditions after the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and their subsequent removal to western Europe and then to Canada. At the end of the war two Polish governments, a Communist one in Warsaw and a non-Communist one in London, vied for control of the national treasures. Before long the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, the RCMP, and the Canadian and Quebec governments all became involved in the desperate hide-and-seek confrontation between the two Polish governments. Eventually, in February 1961, the release of the historic treasures was negotiated and they were returned to their native land, twenty-two years after their wartime departure. It was indeed a long voyage home!

Book Synopsis Performing Peace and Friendship by : Pia Koivunen
Download or read book Performing Peace and Friendship written by Pia Koivunen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing Peace and Friendship tells the story of how the Soviet Union succeeded in utilizing the World Festival of Youth and Students in its cultural diplomacy from late Stalinism through the early Khrushchev period. Pia Koivunen discusses the evolution of the youth gathering into a Soviet cultural product starting from the first festival held in Prague in 1947 and ending with the Moscow 1957 gathering, the latter becoming one of the most frequently referred moments of Khrushchev’s Thaw. By combining both institutional and grass-roots’ perspectives, the book widens our understanding of what Soviet cultural diplomacy was in practice, re-evaluates the agency of young people and provides new insights into the Soviet role in the cultural Cold War. Koivunen argues that rather than simply being orchestrated rallies by the Kremlin bureaucrats, the World Youth Festivals also became significant spaces of transnational encounters for young people, who found ways to employ the event for overcoming the various restrictions and boundaries of the Cold War world.

Book excerpt: In the course of observing a lifetime of unusual worldwide problems occurring on a grand scale, I found myself asking questions about those complicated situations with the same perplexity as my relatives, friends, and acquaintances. In this writing I address those immense problems with considerable help and guidance from the Lord, explaining why such diffi culties persist in the world, and what can be done to set things right. This is what Tell them... is about. It challenges people in all walks of life. REVIEW Congratulations on a very professional, well written and thoughtful work that should give you much satisfaction for having responded to your inner inspiration. Also, extend my congratulations to Thomas Spytman for the Design and Cover Art. (Your son? brother?) It is no small undertaking to seek A Mans Discovery of Gods Plan for Him and Mankind. I believe only you will know how closely you accomplished your goal. For my part, it was a very engaging story of your familys life, its hardships intertwined with the remarkable history of Poland. The well pictorial documentation of your story was a great aid in providing a sense of the people and country that you encountered. -Fran-
