Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper discusses the assessment of economic activity in Togo in absence of quarterly GDP series. Togo collects about 40 macroeconomic indicators monthly that span a wide range of sectors of the economy. The selection of the variables for the economic activity index is conducted by finding the combination of variables. The indicators are aggregated into an index using a methodology used by the Conference Board. Then an economic activity index is constructed that effectively replicates the historical growth rates of real GDP in Togo. The selected index minimizes the deviations between the growth rates of the indicator and actual real GDP growth over 2002–13.

Book Synopsis The Transition to Reality by : John Shepherd
Download or read book The Transition to Reality written by John Shepherd and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, The Transition to Reality is a look into Canada's industrial health, or lack thereof. Author John Shepherd criticizes the contemporary lack of a conscious industrial strategy in Canada, asserting that the need for a coherent policy was masked by essentially ephemeral manufacturing growth in the 1960s. He suggests policymakers focus on the mechanics of producing wealth, rather than merely distributing it. The Transition to Reality is a bracing and often contrary entry into the vibrant political economy debates of the early 1980s.

Book Synopsis Economic Adjustment And Conversion Of Defense Industries by : John E. Lynch
Download or read book Economic Adjustment And Conversion Of Defense Industries written by John E. Lynch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defense plant cutbacks and military base closures have affected hundreds of U.S. communities during the past twenty-five years. Tracing the recovery of four communities after large defense plant cutbacks and of one hundred communities after military base closures, the contributors analyze the transition from the production of military to civilian goods. The contributors examine the market potential of reusing defense industrial plants to produce civilian products within the one- to two-year period called for by economic conversion proponents, showing that the complex process needed to develop, test, and market an entirely new product requires a minimum of five years. They also review the wide range of economic development techniques available at the state and local level, conversion approaches in Western Europe, programs for displaced workers, and reasons why the economic conversion approach has failed to attract public support in the United States. The case studies are used to formulate an integrated, composite approach for coping with plant closures and major employment dislocations. Stressing the in portance of community-based economic adjustment activities, this book will be valuable to all concerned with mitigating the effects of military and civilian plant closures.

The book is written by a group of experts who were pivotal in pushing full employment up the political agenda in the mid 1990's. They identify the hard choices which policy makers must face and discuss why full employment has been so elusive for the past twenty years. The authors examine: * The effects of new technology and increased trade * The increased participation of women in the labour market * The impact of labour market regulation on employment * Worksharing * How welfare reform can help the long term unemployed into jobs * The role of industrial policy * Reform of pay bargaining Well informed and accessible, this book is a valuable contribution to the developing debate on labour market policy.

Book Synopsis Labour Market and Fiscal Policy Adjustments to Shocks by : Nombulelo Gumata
Download or read book Labour Market and Fiscal Policy Adjustments to Shocks written by Nombulelo Gumata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the implications of the South African labour market dynamics including labour market reforms and fiscal policy for monetary policy and financial stability. Evidence suggests there are benefits in adopting an approach that coordinates labour market policies and reforms, fiscal policy, price and financial stability. In particular, the benefits of coordinating policies present policymakers with policy options in cases where they are confronted by binding policy trade-offs and dilemmas, such as in cases when there is divergence in price and financial and economic growth outcomes. The empirical insights and policy recommendations are based on different techniques that include the counterfactual and endogenous-exogenous approaches, non-linearities introduced by thresholds and the impact of persistent and transitory shock effects. Themes covered in the book include various aspects of labour market conditions and reforms and their link to inflation and inflation expectations, the impact of the national minimum wage, the interaction between public and private sector wage inflation, economic policy uncertainty and employment, government debt thresholds, sovereign yields and debt ratings downgrades, labour productivity, the impact of inflation regimes on expansionary fiscal and monetary policy multipliers, the increase in government cost of funding on price and financial stability and the link between fiscal policy and credit dynamics.

Book Synopsis Economic Policy and the Financial Crisis by : Łukasz Mamica
Download or read book Economic Policy and the Financial Crisis written by Łukasz Mamica and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of the global economic crisis which started in the United States in 2007-08 are still being felt in most of the advanced economies, and the mainstream tools of recovery are not having the required results. It seems that many of the after-effects of the crisis, including the instability of the financial markets, increasing public debts and limited economic growth, require new solutions from both economic policy and theory. Lower aggregate demand during the crisis increased the pressure on firms to be more competitive and at the same time, the crisis in the banking system has had a negative impact on the willingness of financial institutions to give credit to companies for investment. Therefore, the key issue for current economic policy is to find a balance between the stabilisation of public finance and maintaining the momentum of long-term growth. This book offers an evolutionary-developmental analysis, combining elements of neo-Schumpeterian economics, institutional economics and post-Keynesian economics, to show that selection processes within an economy, and the institutional rules shaping those processes, are substantially more important than usually recognised by evolutionary economic theory. Two major challenges for economic theory and policy, in particular, have emerged during the crisis. The first is the rise of unemployment coupled with growing public deficits. The second is the financial instability which threatens the permanence of economic development. This book examines the performance of the advanced economies since the crisis and explores why some of them have been more successful in tackling these challenges than others. It is argued that the reasons for the varied performances of these economies lie in the economic policies which were introduced before and in the aftermath of the crisis and the differences in the regulation of their labour markets. This volume will be of interest to students and academics in the areas of macroeconomics, public economics and public management.
