Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unemployment Insurance (UI) system is a lasting piece of the Social Security Act which was enacted in 1935. But like most things that are over 80 years old, it occasionally needs maintenance to keep it operating smoothly while keeping up with the changing demands placed upon it. However, the UI system has been ignored by policymakers for decades and, say the authors, it is broken, out of date, and badly in need of repair. Stephen A. Wandner pulls together a group of UI researchers, each with decades of experience, who describe the weaknesses in the current system and propose policy reforms that they say would modernize the system and prepare us for the next recession.
Book Synopsis Optimal Unemployment Insurance by : Andreas Pollak
Download or read book Optimal Unemployment Insurance written by Andreas Pollak and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing a good unemployment insurance scheme is a delicate matter. In a system with no or little insurance, households may be subject to a high income risk, whereas excessively generous unemployment insurance systems are known to lead to high unemployment rates and are costly both from a fiscal perspective and for society as a whole. Andreas Pollak investigates what an optimal unemployment insurance system would look like, i.e. a system that constitutes the best possible compromise between income security and incentives to work. Using theoretical economic models and complex numerical simulations, he studies the effects of benefit levels and payment durations on unemployment and welfare. As the models allow for considerable heterogeneity of households, including a history-dependent labor productivity, it is possible to analyze how certain policies affect individuals in a specific age, wealth or skill group. The most important aspect of an unemployment insurance system turns out to be the benefits paid to the long-term unemployed. If this parameter is chosen too high, a large number of households may get caught in a long spell of unemployment with little chance of finding work again. Based on the predictions in these models, the so-called "Hartz IV" labor market reform recently adopted in Germany should have highly favorable effects on the unemployment rates and welfare in the long run.
Book Synopsis Designing Labor Market Institutions in Emerging and Developing Economies by : Mr.Romain A Duval
Download or read book Designing Labor Market Institutions in Emerging and Developing Economies written by Mr.Romain A Duval and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses theoretical aspects and evidences related to designing labor market institutions in emerging market and developing economies. This note reviews the state of theory and evidence on the design of labor market institutions in a developing economy context and then reviews its consistency with actual labor market advice in a selected set of emerging and developing economies. The focus is mainly on three broad sets of institutions that matter for both workers’ protection and labor market efficiency: employment protection, unemployment insurance and social assistance, minimum wages and collective bargaining. Text mining techniques are used to identify IMF recommendations in these areas in Article IV Reports for 30 emerging and frontier economies over 2005–2016. This note has provided a critical review of the literature on the design of labor market institutions in emerging and developing market economies, and benchmarked the advice featured in IMF recommendations for 30 emerging market and frontier economies against the tentative conclusions from the literature.

Book Synopsis EBOOK: Macroeconomics by : Rudiger Dornbusch
Download or read book EBOOK: Macroeconomics written by Rudiger Dornbusch and published by McGraw Hill. This book was released on 2014-02-16 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dornbusch, Fischer, and Startz has been a long-standing, leading intermediate macroeconomic theory text since its introduction in 1978. This revision retains most of the text's traditional features, including a middle-of-the-road approach and very current research, while updating and simplifying the exposition. A balanced approach explains both the potential and limitations of economic policy. Macroeconomics employs a model-based approach to macroeconomic analysis and demonstrates how various models are connected with the goal of giving students the capacity to analyze current economic issues in the context of an economic frame of reference. The only pre-requisite continues to be principles of economics.
Book Synopsis MACROECONOMIC THEORY by : M. MARIA JOHN KENNEDY
Download or read book MACROECONOMIC THEORY written by M. MARIA JOHN KENNEDY and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2011-02-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomic theories were designed to cope up with the economic turmoil, such as Great Depression, so as to stabilize the economy. This book comprehensively explains the broad aggregates and their interactions such as national income and output, the unemployment rate, and price inflation, and sub-aggregates like total consumption and investment spending, and their components. Divided into six parts, the textbook elaborates various aspects of macro-economics—circular flow and its effects on national income, monetary theory, business cycle theory and macroeconomic policies—in detail. The book makes clear the difference between three approaches to economics—Keynesian economics, which focuses on demand; New-classical economics, which is based on rational expectations and efficient markets; and Innova-tion economics, which is focused on long run growth through innovation. A prominent feature of this text is the use of simple algebraic expressions and formulations to reinforce analytical expositions of complex macroeconomic theories in students. The book also explicates how macroeconomic models and their forecasts can be utilized by both governments and large corporations to assist in the development and evaluation of economic policy. The chapters are incorporated with real-life examples giving practical insight on the subject. Primarily intended for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of economics, this book can also be beneficial for the students opting for the courses in commerce.

Book Synopsis Social Security Pension Reform in Europe by : Martin Feldstein
Download or read book Social Security Pension Reform in Europe written by Martin Feldstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Security in the United States and in Europe is at a critical juncture. Through the essays assembled in Social Security Pension Reform in Europe, Martin Feldstein and Horst Siebert, along with a number of distinguished contributors, discuss the challenges facing Social Security reform in the aging societies of Europe. A remarkable range of European nations—Germany, France, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Hungary—have implemented or are about to implement mixed Social Security systems that combine a traditional defined benefit of the pay-as-you-go system with an individual retirement account defined contribution of a capital-funded system. The essays here highlight the problems that the European pension reform process faces and how it differs from that of the United States. This timely volume will significantly enrich the debate on pension reform worldwide.
