Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Caribbean Forester, Vol. 15: January-April, 1954; Nos. 1 And 2 Research in this problem area has, as elsewhere been concerned with the artificial introduction of superior species into both open areas and secondary forests and also with the improvement of existing forests by partial cuttings. The existence within this problem area of the only extensive well developed virgin and slightly disturbed for ests in the island has provided the sole local opportunity to perform fundamental research on the silvical characteristics and require ments of the component species. Studies of this nature have been caried out as a basis for silviculture in several problem areas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Caribbean Forester, 1949, Vol. 10 In the interior of Puerto Rico, between Caguas and Cayey, near Km. 48 on the military road, stands a forest of about 50 acres. It contrasts sharply with the bare hills of this intensively cultivated tobacco region. From.the road, this forest looks unusually tall, and its canopy is irregular in height and varied in color, giving the impression that it has not been disturbed for many years (see Fig. In the hope that it might be a relic of original vegetation the writer, together with D. B. Fanshaw, of the British Guiana Forest Department, took occasion to enter it. What found was difficult to believe. This book was released on 1998-11-15 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forestry professors used to remind students that, whereas physicians bury their mistakes, foresters die before theirs are noticed. But good institutions live longer than the scientists who contribute to building them, and the half-century of work of the USDA Forest Service's Institute of Tropical Forestry (ITF) is in plain view: an unprecedented corpus of accomplishments that would instill pride in any organization. There is scarcely anyone interested in current issues of tropical forestry who would not benefit from a refresher course in ITF's findings: its early collaboration with farmers to establish plantations, its successes in what we now call social forestry, its continuous improvement of nursery practices, its screening trials of native species, its development of wood-processing technologies appropriate for developing countries, its thorough analysis of tropical forest function, and its holistic approach toward conservation of endangered species. Fortunately, ITF has a long history of information exchange through teaching; like many others, I got my own start in tropical forest ecology fromjust such a course in Puerto Rico. And long before politicians recognized the global importance of tropical forestry, the ITF staff served actively as ambassadors of the discipline, visiting tropical coun tries everywhere to learn and, when invited to do so, to help solve local problems. It is a general principle of biogeography that species' turnover rates on islands are higher than those on continents. Inevitably, the same is true of scientists assigned to work on islands.

Chapters in this book include hydrology, nutrient cycling, forest phenology, insect-plant interactions, forest microclimate, plant distributions, forest dynamics and conservation and management of flora and fauna. It provides a comprehensive and detailed review of the ecology, biology and natural history of the forests of the area.
