Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of leaps and bounds in both society and technology, there are still some truths that remain universal. The sky is blue, ice cream is delicious, and nothing adjusts a bratty attitude quite like a sound spanking. While the latter is an immutable fact, sadly not all Caregivers are prepared to provide their Little or Middle with the sort of no-nonsense discipline they need in order to truly thrive. Fortunately, Clarine Klein - renowned Professor of Spankology - has condensed two decades worth of meticulous research in the Disciplinary Arts into an easy (and fun!) to read manual guaranteed to provide you with everything you need to give a spanking by the book! Topics covered in this spanktastic guide include: How to give an effective scolding. A deep dive into Supplementary Punishments such as early bedtimes, mouth-soaping, and diapers / pull-ups. A detailed overview of the five types of spankings, including Attitude Adjustments, Spankings for Encouragement, and Maintenance Spankings. A comprehensive guide of recommended Spanking Positions and Implements as well as how best to use them. A step-by-step walk-through of every facet of giving your Little or Middle the sort of spanking that is guaranteed to produce long-lasting results. And so much more! == Please Note == that this book is intended for adults engaging in CONSENTING ageplay, spanking, and other related kinks only! NO CHILD SHOULD EVER BE HIT FOR DISCIPLINE I don't care if you grew up as a wooden spoon survivor, or were like me and just had a bone-deep interest in spanking since before you can remember. Unlike the tantalizing nonsense in this book, actual scientists have proven time and time again that corporal punishment does not work to improve behavior and is both harmful and abusive to those who receive it. To that end, allow me to clarify that this book is meant to be a parody of those god awful raising your kids the "right" way through old-fashioned Christian fundamentalism and spanking books (Looking at you Dare to Discipline, God, the Rod, and your Child's Bod, and all the dreck written by the Pearls), and as such it is not to be taken as any sort of endorsement of those sorts of parenting styles. Because, yeah. They're gross.

Book excerpt: THE KEY TO DISCIPLINE IS NOT PUNISHMENT, BUT MUTUAL RESPECT All parents try to do their best--but the best of intentions don't always produce the best results. Dr. Jane Nelsen, an experienced psychologist, educator, and mother, believes that children misbehave when they feel thwarted in their need to belong and in their need for love and attention. An authoritative approach, using phrases like " Because I said so!" , will only lead to rebellious behavior. Instead, parents need basic principles that bring them and their children closer. They need Positive Discipline. Dr. Nelsen explains that parents who use kindness and firmness to teach life skills will encourage self-respect, self-discipline, cooperation, good behavior, and problem-solving skills in their children. In Positive Discipline, revised and updated for the '90s, she shows all of us, parents and teachers alike, exactly how her practical program works--answering, step-by-step, such important questions as: *What works better than punishment to teach children positive, good behavior? *What mistakes do most parents make " in the name of love" ? *How can parents turn their mistakes into assets? *How can praise be dangerous? *What are the dangers of trying to be " Super Mom" ? *How can teachers avoid discipline problems in the classroom? " It is positive! It works! It saves your sanity! And it is easy to share with others." --Julie Pope, Parent Sacramento, CA " As a parent and psychotherapist, I have found enormous value and practical wisdom in Positive Discipline. It conveys a win/win atmosphere for parents and children. The techniques are so easy tolearn and fun to use...Anyone following these concepts will see almost instant results and big smiles on the faces of their children." --Katherine Dusay, Psychotherapist San Francisco, CA

Book excerpt: There is no way you can read this book and not feel the pain and joys of Mattie Posey as she lives in the aftermath of the Civil War on a farm in Mississippi. The times are hard and she has to do the work of a man on the family farm, as she has no brothers to help with the farm work. When her religiously prejudiced parents interfere with her love for a catholic boy, Mattie's pain devastates her soul and threatens to break her spirit. Mattie's manic/depressive mother, Annie, vacillates between extreme emotional lows and highs, which cause her to be very strict, and a harsh disciplinarian. Mattie's father, Wade, is a gentle, kind man. However, he does not take a stand against his wife's extreme discipline of the children. Mattie must assume her mother's duties and care for her when she is incapacitated by her depression. A rogue panther is lured to the Posey house by the smell of fresh, butchered pork which hangs in the smokehouse. The family's life is endangered when the dogs corner the panther under the kitchen but Annie's quick thinking and action saves her family. Mattie's love for her horse, Prince and her confidence in his speed entice her to enter the horse race at the Neshoba County Fair. Her determination to prove Prince as the fastest horse in the community causes her to break rules in order to win the race. The Posey family and the black family, who shares their surname, have been bound in a close relationship since Wade and Joshua were small children. The trials of rugged farm life and the illnesses and deaths due to a lack of medical care bind them even closer. When Mattie falls in love with Frank Haney, a boy of the Catholic faith, her prejudiced parents take drastic measures to prevent their marriage, so they decide to elope. The Ku Klux Klan interferes with Wade's efforts to reward his faithful, black friend with a deed to part of his farm. When a cross is burned in his front yard he visits each of the Klan members and gives them a piece of the charred cross. Years later, Mattie meets John Mayo, who is twenty years her senior and when he proposes marriage to her she has difficulty accepting because of her love for Frank.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: When a child has a health problem, parents want answers. But when a child has cerebral palsy, the answers don't come quickly. A diagnosis of this complex group of chronic conditions affecting movement and coordination is difficult to make and is typically delayed until the child is eighteen months old. Although the condition may be mild or severe, even general predictions about long-term prognosis seldom come before the child's second birthday. Written by a team of experts associated with the Cerebral Palsy Program at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, this authoritative resource provides parents and families with vital information that can help them cope with uncertainty. Thoroughly updated and revised to incorporate the latest medical advances, the second edition is a comprehensive guide to cerebral palsy. The book is organized into three parts. In the first, the authors describe specific patterns of involvement (hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia), explain the medical and psychosocial implications of these conditions, and tell parents how to be effective advocates for their child. In the second part, the authors provide a wealth of practical advice about caregiving from nutrition to mobility. Part three features an extensive alphabetically arranged encyclopedia that defines and describes medical terms and diagnoses, medical and surgical procedures, and orthopedic and other assistive devices. Also included are lists of resources and recommended reading.
