Book excerpt: Existing research literature indicates a scarcity of African American males attaining senior administrative positions at predominantly White institutions (PWIs). The previous research often lacks an empirical focus, resulting in a substantial gap in the literature (Jackson, 2004; Lewis, 2007; Pickron, 1991). This qualitative study examines the career paths and leadership experiences of nineteen African American male senior administrators in student affairs at four-year predominantly White institutions across the United States. The rationale for this study emerges from the researcher's frustration with the paucity of male senior administrators of color in student affairs at PWIs as role models, and a lack of clarity as to the steps needed to attain such a position. An exploration into the attainment of senior administrative positions in student affairs would disclose the necessary leadership skills and training appropriate to lead a student affairs organization.

College campuses and spaces operate as models of the greater society. Therefore, all of the challenges and issues of racism, discrimination, and anti-Blackness are present (Rankin et al. 2017). While students experience these challenges and issues first-hand, so do the folx hired to support students, the student affairs practitioners. Kanagala and Oliver (2019) claimed that “for institutions of higher education to be equitable and inclusive, college administrators, faculty, and staff, including student affairs professionals, must attend to the needs of students, especially students with multiple marginalized identities.” (p. 410). I argue the same is accurate in creating more equitable and inclusive spaces for student affairs employees. Student affairs practitioners Blackness must be accepted to move toward equity and inclusivity. So, this book roars, “student affairs and white colleagues, please respect our Blackness. Our Blackness is a part of our story, not yours!” (Tomlin, 2022, p. 176). Higher education institutions can learn much from the stories shared in this book that can inform the recruitment and retention of Black professionals. Thus, Still Working While Black: The Untold Stories of Student Affairs Practitioners is a must-read for all higher education professionals and institutions looking for strategies to support Black student affairs practitioners.

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences (personal, professional, social) that influenced African American student affairs administrators at public, four-year, predominantly White institutions decision to pursue student affairs as a career. Further, this study investigates the association between these experiences and anticipatory socialization. The concept of early professional socialization or anticipatory socialization is the first step that takes place in the socialization process and occurs prior to entry into an organization. I argue that African American student affairs administrators are imperative to the student affairs profession because they play an instrumental role in the development of African American college students, as well diversifying the field of student affairs as a whole. This diversity enhances the educational experience for both minority and majority students. Therefore, it is imperative that student affairs administrators continue to encourage and recruit more African Americans to the field, by building a pipeline of future student affairs professionals. This qualitative study examines the previous experiences and backgrounds of African American student affairs administrators. Focusing on professionals working at four-year, predominantly White institutions (PWIs), this study seeks to learn about the personal, professional, and social experiences that led participating staff members to pursue work in the area of student affairs. The central focus of this study is to examine and understand how African American student affairs administrators come to choose their profession, and ways in which current African American student affairs administrators may recruit and encourage students to enter into the student affairs profession. Socialization is the process by which an individual learn the necessary attitudes, skills, and behaviors in order to fulfill professional roles organization (Merton, 1957; Tierney, 1997; Van Maanen & Schein, 1979). Socialization theory frames this study and provides a framework for analyzing my research problem in light of understanding how minority student affairs professionals may apply the socialization process in order to recruit and influence African American students to pursue careers in the student affairs profession. I hope that the significance of my findings will assist current African American student affairs administrators in gaining a better understanding of how these experiences impact the decision of African Americans to pursue careers in student affairs, so that they can better recruit more African American students into the field.

Using a purposeful sample of eight full time African American student affairs administrators from various institutions with completely different makeups concerning their student population and the number of African American student affairs administrators at each institution. The study revealed important themes that emerged from analysis of interview transcripts to explain the experiences, successes, and challenges in a predominantly White institution in the southeastern United States. Specifically, the study addresses the strategies used by the African American male student affairs administrators to survive or thrive within a space that is not created with them in mind. By exploring the day-to-day experiences of African American male student affairs administrators, this study also sought to give predominantly White institutions an opportunity to gain information on how to retain and recruit this population. The conceptual frameworks that guided this study, Critical Race Theory and Cultural Community Wealth Theory focused on the many different variables that influence, negatively and positively, the African American male student affairs administrators within predominantly White institutions in the southeastern United States. Further, the study explored the experiences, successes, and challenges of African American administrators working at a predominantly White institution as suggested from a review of literature. There are very few resources regarding this population, thus, making this study a necessity in ensuring that they are successful within their positions.
