Book excerpt: A very impressionable boy is permanently traumatized by the horror of the Holocaust. He is consumed by his hatred of his father and every other Nazi in the world. His sole purpose in life is to exterminate every Nazi who was implicated in the holocaust. His obsession grows to include every relative, even to the third generation. Colonel Otto Richter is stationed in Marseilles as WW1 ends. As he is walking back to his post he hears moaning coming from a freight car on a side track. Inside the car is a young French soldier who has been wounded. Otto doesnt know the young soldier is the nephew of the captain of a ship tied at the dock in Marseilles. Nor does he know there is a fortune on that freight car. General Emil Richter (Ottos son) and Gunter Rawls know the German soldiers are pilfering everything they can get their hands on as WW2 is winding down. Emil and Gunter are not interested in pilfering food and cigarettes. Gunter knows the whereabouts of the art galleries in Europe that house the most famous paintings in the world. Now there is something worth pilfering. Seasoned with romance and intrigue and sprinkled with indelicate sex, Heartache to Rage runs the gamut of emotions.

Book Synopsis Free at Last in Paradise by : Ananda W. P. Guruge
Download or read book Free at Last in Paradise written by Ananda W. P. Guruge and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FREE AT LAST IN PARADISE is a historical novel on Sri Lanka. It is the first part of A SRI LANKAN TRILOGY FROM FREEDOM TO PEACE and deals with the period 1848 to 1948 when the country evolved into a modern nation and regained independence. It is a gripping novel tracing the path of the freedom movement, in then Ceylon from the 1848 rebellion to Independence in 1948. It features a Buddhist boy; a young novice in a temple, later educated in missionary schools, becomes a government functionary, a forest monk and still later an erudite scholar, whose life parallels the freedom movement driven mainly by the Buddhist revival led by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott and his followers Anagarika Dharmapala and Sir Baron Jayatilake. The hero was a strong nationalist, deeply involved in the movement most of his adult life. Though a work of epic proportions, full of information masterfully dissecting every aspect of social and family life, with all its strains of caste and class, as well as the political and cultural scene of Ceylon at the time, it is a triumphant love story, that is by turns dramatic and powerful, romantic and tender that makes you want to keep reading. Displaying the author's dexterity, the most readable prose is appropriately laced with exhilarating verse. This is an extraordinary novel that exemplifies the best of historical fiction. Somehow he has managed to make the story both educational and, dare I say it, fun! “The book will be read with pleasure," says David Vickery of Britain, "by those who love Ceylon and introduce those who have no knowledge of the country to a fascinating society." Leslie Gray M.D. of Denver, Colorado, USA, in his review published in the Journal of Theosophical History, says, “a magnum opus, a masterpiece from any angle. Elegant style, eloquent language, relentless tempo, exciting and almost galloping.”

Book Synopsis Italian Cardinals, Reform, and the Church as Property, 1492-1563 by : Barbara Mcclung Hallman
Download or read book Italian Cardinals, Reform, and the Church as Property, 1492-1563 written by Barbara Mcclung Hallman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the heart of her book Hallman performs an amazing feat: patiently tracing the acquisition, trading, subdividing, leasing, and renting of pieces of property that also happened in most cases to carry with them the cure of souls. She does so without losing the reader in a mass of detail by combining quantitative generalizations with examination of aptly chosen individual cases. . . . In short, she demonstrates that the sixteenth-century Italian Church, to alter slightly the epithet used by Ginzburg's Menocchio, was increasingly "a prelates' business." This is a very important book. Not only will it serve those scholars in various disciplines who wich to trace the patronage networks of individual Italian cardinals. As I have indicated, it will also stimulate those interested in reformulating existing paradigms and periodization schemes in early modern European history." --Anne Jacobson Schutte, Lawrence University, in Renaissance Quarterly, Volume 40, Number 2, Summer, 1987.
