Book Synopsis The Paintings of Hendrick Ter Brugghen, 1588-1629 by : Leonard Joseph Slatkes
Download or read book The Paintings of Hendrick Ter Brugghen, 1588-1629 written by Leonard Joseph Slatkes and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paintings of Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588-1629), is the first major study of this important early seventeenth-century master since Benedict Nicolson's classic monograph of 1958. It comprises two chapters that explore ter Brugghen's development as an artist and the reception of his work among contemporaries, followed by a truly monumental catalogue raisonné of ter Brugghen's 89 authentic paintings, 54 pictures associated with the artist and/or his workshop, 141 rejected works, 42 lost works, and lastly, 10 drawings that have been linked to ter Brugghen directly or related to his paintings. Already celebrated during his lifetime, and avidly collected by elite cognescenti in the Dutch Republic and abroad, ter Brugghen executed a dazzling variety of paintings, ranging from Bible subjects and saints, to fascinating mythological images, as well as scenes of daily life, including musicians. Although his knowledge of paintings by Caravaggio that he had seen during his early sojourn in Rome always remained acute, these experiences were continually tempered by his awareness of older Northern European artistic traditions and conventions, with the result that ter Brugghen created pictures whose subject matter and style are fascinating, and at times, unique. Until his untimely death in August of 2003, Leonard J. Slatkes was Distinguished Professor of Art History at Queens College of the City University of New York, NY. He was an internationally renowned expert on the art of the Dutch Caravaggisti, to whom he had devoted many essays, books, and exhibition catalogues. Slatkes had begun conducting research on ter Brugghen's paintings in the 1960's, with the expectation of eventually publishing a new monograph on the artist. Wayne Franits, a former student of Slatkes's, is currently Professor of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. He has authored numerous publications on seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art.

Book Synopsis The Masters of Candlelight by : Christopher Wright
Download or read book The Masters of Candlelight written by Christopher Wright and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Candlelight has fascinated many painters. Some treated it as an experiment to be repeated on occasion, for some it was an interest, and for a few it became an obsession. Surprisingly it is only in recent times that the genius of Geroges de La Tour, Godfried Schalcken and Joseph Wright of Derby has been rediscovered, although all three painters enjoyed considerable reputations in their lifetimes even as specialists of candlelight and night scenes. Many other great painters including such distinguished names as El Greco and Rembradnt used candlelight to express their intentions but this aspect of their art has sometimes gone unnoticed." --back cover

Download or read book Georges de La Tour written by Jacques Thuillier and published by Flammarion-Pere Castor. This book was released on 1993 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges de La Tour ranks with Vermeer and the Le Nain brothers among those seventeenth-century painters whose unmistakable talent is matched only by the aura of mystery that surrounds the artists themselves. Jacques Thuillier's groundbreaking monograph, first published in 1993, places La Tour's oeuvre in the specific context of the Lorraine region where he lived and worked, but also repositions La Tour alongside the greatest European masters. Available for the first time in paperback, this beautifully designed volume, complete with an illustrated catalogue raisonné and translations of key documentary sources, remains the essential reference work on this important and fascinating artist.
Book Synopsis French Painting in the Seventeenth Century by : Alain Mérot
Download or read book French Painting in the Seventeenth Century written by Alain Mérot and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies and exhibitions, combined with the discovery of work by hitherto little-known artists have enabled Merot to take a fresh look at the period and to suggest a new configuration. The great names of the period - Poussin, Vouet, Le Sueur, de La Tour, Mignard - are located in relation to other developments. Merot includes discussion of the impact of contemporary literature and political, philosophical and social influences. The foundation of the Royal Academy of Painting in 1648, and the influence of Mazarin on artistic developments are considered with other issues of status, patronage and connoisseurship. The book provides a panorama of the period; the text is profusely illustrated in colour, and accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography.
