Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Canadian Labour Market by : Helmar Drost
Download or read book An Introduction to the Canadian Labour Market written by Helmar Drost and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Canadian Labour Market is designed for prospective human resource professionals. The text avoids the highly sophisticated statistical techniques that have come to characterize the field over the last two decades. Concepts are presented in non-technical language without relying on mathematical equations. Four goals define the book’s practical approach: 1) to inform the reader about major trends and developments in the Canadian labour market; 2) provide explanation for these real-world developments and labour market outcomes; 3) show why economists sometimes disagree; and 4) teach the reader to apply labour market theory to analyses of current events and labour policy issues.
Book Synopsis Canada’s Labour Market Training System by : Bob Barnetson
Download or read book Canada’s Labour Market Training System written by Bob Barnetson and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the current labour market training system function and whose interests does it serve? In this introductory textbook, Bob Barnetson wades into the debate between workers and employers, and governments and economists to investigate the ways in which labour power is produced and reproduced in Canadian society. After sifting through the facts and interpretations of social scientists and government policymakers, Barnetson interrogates the training system through analysis of the political and economic forces that constitute modern Canada. This book not only provides students of Canada’s division of labour with a general introduction to the main facets of labour-market training—including skills development, post-secondary and community education, and workplace training—but also encourages students to think critically about the relationship between training systems and the ideologies that support them.

Book Synopsis Jobs with Inequality by : John Peters
Download or read book Jobs with Inequality written by John Peters and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Income inequality has skyrocketed in Canada over the past few decades. The rich have become richer, while the average household income has deteriorated and job quality has plummeted. Common explanations for these trends point to globalization, technology, or other forces largely beyond our control. But, as Jobs with Inequality shows, there is nothing inevitable about inequality. Rather, runaway inequality is the result of politics and policies - what governments have done to aid the rich and boost finance and what they have not done to uphold the interests of workers. Drawing on new tax and income data, John Peters tells the story of how inequality is unfolding in Canada today by examining post-democracy, financialization, and labour market deregulation. Timely and novel, Jobs with Inequality explains how and why business and government have rewritten the rules of the economy to the advantage of the few, and considers why progressive efforts to reverse these trends have so regularly run aground.

Book Synopsis Decolonizing Employment by : Shauna MacKinnon
Download or read book Decolonizing Employment written by Shauna MacKinnon and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous North Americans continue to be overrepresented among those who are poor, unemployed, and with low levels of education. This has long been an issue of concern for Indigenous people and their allies and is now drawing the attention of government, business leaders, and others who know that this fast-growing population is a critical source of future labour. Shauna MacKinnon’s Decolonizing Employment: Aboriginal Inclusion in Canada’s Labour Market is a case study with lessons applicable to communities throughout North America. Her examination of Aboriginal labour market participation outlines the deeply damaging, intergenerational effects of colonial policies and describes how a neoliberal political economy serves to further exclude Indigenous North Americans. MacKinnon’s work demonstrates that a fundamental shift in policy is required. Long-term financial support for comprehensive, holistic education and training programs that integrate cultural reclamation and small supportive learning environments is needed if we are to improve social and economic outcomes and support the spiritual and emotional healing that Aboriginal learners tell us is of primary importance.
