Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book, 1906-7, Vol. 34: Annual Volume In issuing our annual volume of reports and statistics once more, we rejoice that we are able to sound a note of optimism regarding Canadian Congregationalism. It would seem that for the last few years each succeeding year has been the best. The record that follows is a record of the attaining of freedom for many churches. Difficulties still confront us, and for those ready for discouragement, there are many things to discourage. We believe, however, that the outlook has not been so bright for years. It devolves upon us to be hopeful, self-reliant, and persistent. A new era is before us for Canadian Congrega tionalism if we will but arise and enter into our heritage, we must look forward to this as a year given over to the inspiring of faith in one another and in the Congregational Ideal. It is only thus that we can prepare ourselves for the mission God has given us to fulfil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As these are perused one is led to exclaim, What hath God wrought. Not one of these reports is in the minor key, there is a clear; ringing note of hopefulness and Victory. Our harps are not hung on the willows, but are in our hands, and we strike them to the praise of Him who always causeth us to triumph in Christ. Our churches to-day are in a position to go forward as never before, most of them being free of debt and therefore free to serve. Book Synopsis The Struggle for the Soul of Journalism by : Ronald R. Rodgers
Download or read book The Struggle for the Soul of Journalism written by Ronald R. Rodgers and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Ronald R. Rodgers examines several narratives involving religion’s historical influence on the news ethic of journalism: its decades-long opposition to the Sunday newspaper as a vehicle of modernity that challenged the tradition of the Sabbath; the parallel attempt to create an advertising-driven Christian daily newspaper; and the ways in which religion—especially the powerful Social Gospel movement—pressured the press to become a moral agent. The digital disruption of the news media today has provoked a similar search for a news ethic that reflects a new era—for instance, in the debate about jettisoning the substrate of contemporary mainstream journalism, objectivity. But, Rodgers argues, before we begin to transform journalism’s present news ethic, we need to understand its foundation and formation in the past.
