Book excerpt: In the fall of 1831, Mrs McIndoe and her children left Scotland to join her husband, William, a labourer on the Rideau Canal. When they arrived they discovered that William had already moved on, forcing Mrs McIndoe to appeal to the public to help reunite her family. As Elizabeth Jane Errington illustrates, the nineteenth-century world of emigration was hazardous. Emigrant Worlds and Transatlantic Communities gives voice to the Irish, Scottish, English, and Welsh women and men who negotiated the complex and often dangerous world of emigration between 1815 and 1845. Using "information wanted" notices that appeared in colonial newspapers as well as emigrants' own accounts, Errington illustrates that emigration was a family affair. Individuals made their decisions within a matrix of kin and community - their experiences shaped by their identities as husbands and wives, parents and children, siblings and cousins. The Atlantic crossing divided families, but it was also the means of reuniting kin and rebuilding old communities. Emigration created its own unique world - a world whose inhabitants remained well aware of the transatlantic community that provided them with a continuing sense of identity, home, and family.

This book was released on 1989-06-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The settlements, economically based on lumber alone, were locked into poverty and dependency by Anglophone-monopoly control of the spruce forests. J.I. Little examines the ultimate failure of the British and Quebec settlement projects and argues that the stranglehold of the monopolies was broken only by the belated extension of the rail network into the Upper St Francis district. Canadians have only recently begun to question their model of company-leased Crown forest reserves and to become interested in the more efficient Scandinavian model of small-scale, privately owned woodlots. This book is one of the first to explore the ideological contradictions and social costs which followed from the entrenchment of large-scale lumber companies in a settled zone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this province known as "the bread basket of the world," agriculture is the culture which for over a century has provided the context for life in Saskatchewan. In this volume are over 200 biographies of men and women who have made significant contributions to the field of agriculture in Saskatchewan. Farmers and ranchers; researchers, teachers, and inventors; leaders in 4-H and the cooperative movement; home economists and agriculture extension workers; journalists, politicians, and activists--whatever the individual endeavour, all worked with the goal of improving farming, and ultimately, improving the lives of those who farmed. The common denominator here is the concern for the good of the community, whether local, national, or international, a concern that has come to characterize the province itself.
