Book Synopsis Northern Forested Wetlands Ecology and Management by : Carl C. Trettin
Download or read book Northern Forested Wetlands Ecology and Management written by Carl C. Trettin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forested wetlands are a major component of northern landscapes, important both for their ecological functions and their socioeconomic values. Historically, these lands have been used for timber and fiber products, hunting, fishing, trapping, food gathering, and recreation. There are many questions about the use and management of these lands in the future, particularly with respect to forest products, hydrology and water quality, plant and wildlife ecology, landscape dynamics, and wetland restoration. Northern Forested Wetlands: Ecology and Management provides a synthesis of current research and literature. It examines the status, distribution, and use of these wetland resources. The book focuses on understanding the role of wetlands in the landscape and on how to manage these wetlands and sustain their important functions. This is a primary reference text for the study and management of northern forested wetlands, providing a forum for information discovered by researchers and managers from many nations.
Book Synopsis Peatland Forestry by : Eero Paavilainen
Download or read book Peatland Forestry written by Eero Paavilainen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a review and synthesis of boreal mire ecosystems including peat soil properties, mire hydrology, carbon and nutrient cycling, and classification of mire sites. The emphasis, however, is on peatland forests as a renewable natural resource. The approach originated in northern Europe, because there, especially in Finland, operational scale forest drainage has a long tradition based on research aiming to maintain and increase wood production on peatlands. Whenever relevant, a closer look is also given to other countries in Europe, Canada, and the USA. The results of recent studies on different environmental effects of peatland forestry are also discussed in detail.

Book Synopsis Boreal Peatland Ecosystems by : R.K. Wieder
Download or read book Boreal Peatland Ecosystems written by R.K. Wieder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first truly ecosystem-oriented book on peatlands. It adopts an ecosystems approach to understanding the world's boreal peatlands. The focus is on biogeochemical patterns and processes, production, decomposition, and peat accumulation, and it provides additional information on animal and fungal diversity. A recurring theme is the legacy of boreal peatlands as impressive accumulators of carbon as peat over millennia.

Book Synopsis Conserving Wetlands in Managed Forests by : Gregg Sheehy
Download or read book Conserving Wetlands in Managed Forests written by Gregg Sheehy and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper first describes the nature & importance of wetlands in the forested regions of Canada and the forestry uses of wetlands. It then reviews the potential impacts of forestry operations on wetland ecosystems, including operations on wetland sites, upland operations near wetlands, draining treed wetlands for forestry, and the installation of forest roads that cross wetlands. Finally, measures to prevent or reduce those impacts are presented, with reference to experience in Canada and the United States.

Book Synopsis Early Growth Response in Trees Following Peatland Drainage by : Graham Robin Hillman
Download or read book Early Growth Response in Trees Following Peatland Drainage written by Graham Robin Hillman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) and tamarack (Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) on two drained peatlands, at McLennan and Wolf Creek in central Alberta, was greater than on undrained control areas 910 years after drainage. On the drained plots, diameter growth was 1.62.3 times, height growth 2.73.5 times, and volume growth 4.49.7 times that on the undrained control plots. There were no clear differences in growth among various ditch spacings (30, 40, 50, and 60 m), and correlation between tree growth and distance of trees from the nearest ditch was poor. These results suggest that drawdown of the water table was sufficient to create unsaturated zones that facilitated equitable tree growth across the strips between ditches. Tree ring analyses revealed that increases in growth could begin as early as 34 years after drainage. The successful regeneration of black spruce on the control plots at McLennan and the reasonable size of black spruce and tamarack ingrowth on control plots suggest that both species are able to germinate and survive on wet sites initially, but high water tables inhibit their further development. Additional periodic measurements of both species are necessary to determine long-term growth patterns after drainage and to assess the financial feasibility of peatland drainage as a practical option in forest management.
