It is widely accepted that Thomas Hiram Holding was one of the first proponents of the activity, which is gaining in popularity every year and will continue to do so, through the effects of the current economic climate. There are currently over 1.2 million people who use camping as their main holiday within the UK and this is set to grow in my opinion. Holding wrote the first Camper's Handbook in 1908. This book described to people, for the first time, the basics of camping. The knowledge required to write this book he learnt whilst traveling with a wagon train across the prairies of America. The journey, taken with his family in 1853 at the age of 9, was 1200 miles long, we can only marvel at the experiences he must have had. In 1887 he visited the highlands of Scotland whilst on a cruise and decided to camp from his canoe. Holding was also a keen cyclist and it was after a conversation with a friend he later embarked on what could have been the first bicycle camping trip which they took in Ireland. For this trip, Holding designed some easily portable camping equipment, embarking with 4 friends in the late 1800s. He wrote a book about this experience entitled 'Cycle and Camp in Connemara' (1898), the book has an open invitation for fellow enthusiasts to contact him, which led to the formation of Association of Cycle Campers in 1901. This very rare and now out of print book is a facsimile reprint and may contain small imperfections.

Book excerpt: The Camper Book will captivate all those who dream of waving good-bye to the rat race from the window of their own moveable home, be it a camper, RV, travel trailer, camper van, or tiny camper. Not just for placid retirees anymore, camper culture has sprung up among simplicity-seeking millennials, retro-loving "glampers," sports and movie stars, aging hippies, contract workers, "road-schoolers," and others. Award-winning journalist Dave Hoekstra hit the road in his own custom camper van, named Bluebird, to explore the history, culture, subcultures, and future of camper life. Traveling and talking his way through US campsites, RV parks, landmarks, and communities, Hoekstra draws out revealing stories from all walks of life—from Americans who are downsizing material goods while upsizing spiritual pursuits to RV enthusiasts such as Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Prine and Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon. A modern-day Studs Terkel, Hoekstra provides a delightful mix of oral history, in-depth reporting, and practical information, while photographer Jon Sall's beautiful color photographs illuminate the unique people, places, and rigs that typify camper life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a handy, quick-reference guide easily accessible with basic wilderness first aid knowledge, but it does not require advanced degrees or experience with medicine and prehospital care. Recognizing that certain knowledge and procedures are outside the scope of a layperson’s training, Dr. Grant Lipman limits the use of technical terms and advanced techniques that may be unfamiliar to some readers or beyond their comfort zone. This system-based, easy-to-follow guide assists the first aid provider when encountering most wilderness emergencies, from cold and heat concerns and blister treatments to high altitude illness and lightning injury prevention—and much more. Typically the most challenging decision in the wilderness environment is when to evacuate a sick or potentially sick person, and as such, each section has detailed decision-making steps to inform you of when to be concerned and when to get out. This guidance is based upon the recent evidence-based consensus statement published by the Wilderness Medical Society on the scope of practice of wilderness first aid. Filled with original, full-color artwork illustrating the techniques and procedures described and with internal-spiral binding and waterproof pages handy for travel into extreme environments, The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a must-have for every back pocket or backpack.
