Book excerpt: -- Demonstrates the decisive German contribution to victory at Waterloo -- Unpublished German eyewitness accounts and regimental reports -- Covers the battles of Waterloo, Wavre and the taking of Paris Peter Hofschroer, in this second volume of his masterly study of 1815, challenges the accepted version of events at the battle of Waterloo. He demonstrates convincingly that Allied victory was due not to steadfast British infantry repelling the French, but to the timely arrival of Prussian troops who stole victory from Napoleon and sealed the fate of the last Grande Armee. Drawing on previously unpublished accounts, Hofschroer gives not only the Prussian perspective of their march to Waterloo and decisive attack on Napoleon's flank, but also details of the actions fought by some of the 25,000 Germans in Wellington's 'British' army -- more than a third of the Duke's force. A gripping narrative of astonishing detail captures such key episodes of Waterloo as La Haye Sainte, Papelotte, Hougoumont and the Prussian struggle with the Imperial Guard for Plancenoit. In addition, Hofschroer examines the battle at Wavre, the Allied offensive into France, the taking of Paris and the sieges across northern France. 1815: The Waterloo Campaign-The German Victory is a definitive work on an epic confrontation by one of today's leading military writers.

Excerpt: ...at Quatre Bras does not in any way justify Napoleon's delay in marching upon the English. The propriety of this step was not dependent on the accounts to be received from Marshal Ney. To unite the reserves to the left wing and move upon Wellington at the earliest possible moment was the thing to do, whatever might be the reports from Ney. Marshal Soult seems to have been of no assistance to the Emperor on this morning. If he had been a competent and efficient chief-of-staff he would assuredly have had all needed information ready for the Emperor when the latter made his appearance in the morning. As it was, knowing nothing of what had happened at Quatre Bras till nearly eight o'clock, waiting till it should suit Ney to furnish him with the information requested in the 8 A. M. despatch, assuming that Wellington must have heard of the defeat of Bliicher and fallen back in consequence, the Emperor amused himself with going over the field of battle, and talking politics to the generals.9 He did not exert himself in the least to stimulate the energy La Tour d'Auvergne, p. 214. See also, pp. 208 and 233. and activity of his subordinates; in fact, he yielded to that lassitude which is so apt to succeed unusual exertion. He deliberately postponed the execution of the next step in his campaign, notwithstanding that the inComplete result of his encounter with the Prussians rendered it all the more imperative that no time should be lost and no opportunity neglected. During the forenoon, however, the troops intended to join Ney were ordered to Marbais on the turnpike, --Lobau' at ten o'clock, --the Guard and Milhaud's cuirassiers at eleven. At noon, it having been reported that the English were still at Quatre Bras, another order" was sent...

Book excerpt: The concluding volume of this work provides a fresh description of the climatic battle of Waterloo placed in the context of the whole campaign. It discusses several vexed questions: Blucher's intentions for the battle, Wellington's choice of site, his reasons for placing substantial forces at Hal, the placement of Napoleon's artillery, who authorized the French cavalry attacks, Grouchy's role on 18 and 19 June, Napoleon's own statements on the Garde's formation in the final attack, and the climactic moment when the Prussians reached Wellington's troops near la Belle Alliance. Close attention is paid to the negotiations that led to the capitulation of Paris, and subsequent French claims. The allegations of Las Cases and later historians that Napoleon's surrender to Captain Maitland of the Bellerophon amounted to entrapment are also examined. After a survey of the peace settlement of 1815, the book concludes with a masterly chapter reviewing the whole story of the 1815 campaign.

Book excerpt: This, the fourth volume in Andrew Field's highly praised study of the Waterloo campaign from the French perspective, depicts in vivid detail the often neglected final phase the rout and retreat of Napoleon's army. The text is based exclusively on French eyewitness accounts which give an inside view of the immediate aftermath of the battle and carry the story through to the army's disbandment in late 1815. Many French officers and soldiers wrote more about the retreat than they did about the catastrophe of Waterloo itself. Their recollections give a fascinating insight to the psyche of the French soldier. They also provide a firsthand record of their experiences and the range of their reactions, from those who deserted the colors and made their way home, to those who continued to serve faithfully when all was lost. Napoleons own flight from Waterloo is an essential part of the narrative, but the main emphasis is on the fate of the beaten French army as it was experienced by eyewitnesses who lived through the last days of the campaign.

The main body of the Prussian army (three corps, together 90,000 men) thus found itself in position between Bry and Tongrines, at ten o'clock on the morning of the 16th. Wellington, who believed Napoleon still at Paris, was not aware of his army's approach, until the news of the passage of the Sambre received at 5 P. M., on the 15th at Brussels, while at a dinner; but the duke had forewarned his troops to hold themselves in readiness for the first signal, and he sent ofiicers in all directions to put them in motion. His left under the Prince of Orange, was in cantonments between Mons and Nivelles, and with its head-quarters at Braine le Comte; his right under General Hill, extended towards Ath. It was then only by a prodigy of activity that this extended line could be concentrated on his left by the evening of the 16th or the morning of the 17th, and it was evident that a connection with the Prussians could be effected by the road from Nivelles to Quatre-Bras. After having dispatched these orders, Wellington repaired to Quatre-Bras, where on the morning of the 16th he found a portion of Perpoucher's Belgian division just from Nivelles, and the brigade of the Prince of Saxe-Weimar. While awaiting the columns from Brussels and Braine, the duke galloped over to Bry, where, about noon, he held an interview with Blucher; finding the Prussian army disposed to give battle, he promised to collect thirty or thirty-five thousand men during the night, to support his right, and with this object returned to QuatreBras, where he arrived after two o'clock. To conquer an enemy that made such wise disposiHons, it would have required the ancient impetuosity of the conqueror of Italy, Ulm, Jena, and Ratisbonne; but bis warmest admirers...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Waterloo has been studied and dissected so extensively that one might assume little more on the subject could be discovered. Now historian Peter Hofschröer brings forward a long-repressed commentary written by Carl von Clausewitz, the author of On War. Clausewitz, the Western world’s most renowned military theorist, participated in the Waterloo campaign as a senior staff officer in the Prussian army. His appraisal, offered here in an up-to-date and readable translation, criticized the Duke of Wellington’s actions. Lord Liverpool sent his translation of the manuscript to Wellington, who pronounced it a “lying work.” The translated commentary was quickly buried in Wellington’s private papers, where it languished for a century and a half. Now published for the first time in English, Hofschröer brings Clausewitz’s critique back into view with thorough annotation and contextual explanation. Peter Hofschröer, long recognized as a leading scholar of the Napoleonic Wars, shows how the Duke prevented the account’s publication during his lifetime—a manipulation of history so successful that almost two centuries passed before Clausewitz’s work reemerged, finally permitting a reappraisal of key events in the campaign. In addition to translating and annotating Clausewitz’s critique, Hofschröer also includes an order of battle and an extensive bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the original text - THE need of another narrative of the campaign of Waterloo may not be at first sight apparent. There has been a great deal written on this subject, and much of it has been written by eminent hands. The last and the most unfortunate campaign of the great soldier of mod-ern times has naturally attracted the repeated atten-tion of military historians. Jomini, Clausewitz, Charras, Siborne, Kennedy, Chesney, Vaudoncourt, La Tour d'Auvergne, Thiers, Hooper, and many others have sought to explain the almost inexplicable result, -the complete defeat in a very brief campaign of the acknowl-edged master of modern warfare. One would suppose that the theme had been exhausted, and that nothing more remained to be said. . . . With a few exceptions, too, the histories of this cam-paign have been gravely affected by the partisanship of their authors. It is well-nigh impossible for Thiers and La Tour d'Auvergne to admit any fault, for Charras and Quinet to admit any merit, in Napoleon's manage-ment of affairs. It. is equally difficult for the majority of English writers to avoid taking sides against the Emperor in any of the numerous disputes to which the campaign of Waterloo has given rise. These influences have operated in many cases to deflect the narrative of the military operations into a criticism of those who have written from the opposite standpoint. . . . In the treatment of the subject, Napoleon will natur-ally be the central figure. The campaign was his cam-paign, planned and executed by him, frustrated by his opponents. It will be our endeavor to get at, as nearly as we can, his intentions, his expectations, his views from day to day of the facts of the case, so that we may, if possible, carry a personal interest into the varying for-tnnes of those eventful days. This will be found entirely consistent, it is believed, with an equally careful attempt to view events from the standpoints which the English and Prussian commanders must have occnpied from time to time during the campaign. . . .

What would have happened if Marshal Grouchy, Napoleon's wing commander, had marched to the sound of the guns as his subordinate commanders had urged? This intriguing idea is an open invitation for taking a closer look at what might have been in June of 1815. This volume is the first modern full length alternative history written about the Waterloo campaign but it does not stop there. First, the narrative seeks to examine and explain the logic behind the French emperor's decisions and, to a lesser extent, those made by his famous enemies. Then, the change in history is seamlessly inserted into the overall context of the campaign and followed to its dramatic climax at the battle of Ohain on June 19, 1815. The campaign of Waterloo was a series of opportunities taken and missed by both sides and the volume shows how a single decision could have changed the course of history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political and Military History of the Campaign of Waterloo This volume was the last of a work, published some twelve years since; but as the manuscript of this campaign had unfortunately been mislaid, the editor was compelled to supply its place hastily and somewhat incompletely. Having, by an unforeseen event, recovered the original manuscript, I hasten to restore it in its integrity, with this difference, that I present it in my name, instead of causing the recital to be made by Napoleon. A powerful motive has induced me to act thus, and change the form employed in the rest of the work: it is, that the rapidity of the emperor's fall, and his exile, preventing him from procuring accurate information of what had occurred, not only in his army, but also in that of his adversaries, he had at St. Helena composed narratives, with which a disinterested historian could not entirely concur, so that it would have been necessary to make him utter things, of which he had judged altogether differently. The censures that Napoleon has cast on Ney and Grouchy, and which these have returned with interest, have all, more or less, something specious in them. I have sought to he impartial in presenting them. Napoleon did not always give his orders in an irreproachable manner; these orders were not always well executed or properly interpreted, and his lieutenants knew not how to supply the deficiency in what they had received incompletely and vaguely.
