Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign of Magenta and Solferino, 1859 The campaign of 1859 in Northern Italy was one of the first of the epoch-making, rapidly conducted wars which marked the latter half of the nineteenth century. It was, moreover, as has been pointed out by the author of I mpenal Strategy, the first war in Europe which conveyed some preliminary indication of what railways can accomplish. The success of the French Army in this short and brilliant, if rather lucky, campaign was largely due to the efficient service of the southern rail ways. A study oi the events of the war and of the various considerations which led to the somewhat nu expected determination to make peace, leads one to the conviction that, while a lavish expenditure on the out break oi war can so far repair the neglect of the years of peace and plenty that armies may be improvised for a campaign of short duration, neither hurried organisa tion normake-shift armies are equal to a protracted effort, or to oppose the forces of those who have used the long years of peace to prepare for the days of war. Book excerpt: Solferino was the largest battle fought on Italian soil before the First World War, and the culmination of the 1859 campaign in northern Italy. Chiefly remembered today as the catalyst for Henri Dunant establishing the Red Cross, an up-to-date military account of the campaign is badly needed. In this tremendously detailed study the author, a lifelong student of the battle, reassesses the evidence based on an enormous amount of original archival research. Rather than relying on official reports and histories, which were often politically-driven, the author has gone back to the archives, and uncovered, for instance, the role played by cavalry and artillery during the campaign. Decision on the Mincio is supported by an array of illustrations, highly detailed maps and orders of battle.

Book excerpt: In the 1840s, post-Napoleonic Italy was 'a geographical expression' – not a country, but a patchwork of states, divided between the Austrian-occupied north, and a Spanish-descended Bourbon monarchy, who ruled the south from Naples. Two decades later, it was a nation united under a single king and government, thanks largely to the efforts of the Kings of Sardinia and Piedmont, and the revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. This book, the first of a two-part series on the armies that fought in the Italian Wars of Unification, examines the Piedmontese and Neapolitan armies that fought in the north and south of the peninsula. Illustrated with prints, early photos and detailed commissioned artwork, this book explores the history, organization, and appearance of the armies that fought to unite the Italian peninsula under one flag.
