Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Volume 14 The Cambridge Ancient History concludes its story. This latest volume embraces the wide range of approaches and scholarship which have in recent decades transformed our view of Late Antiquity. In particular, traditional political and social history has been enormously enhanced by integrating the rich evidence of Christian writing, and the constantly expanding results of archaeological research. A picture emerges of a period of considerable military and political disruption, but also of vibrant intellectual and cultural activity. The volume begins with a series of narrative chapters. These are followed by sections on government and institutions, economy and society, and religion and culture. A section on the provinces and the non-Roman world marks the rise of new and distinct political and cultural entities. This volume, and the CAH, ends in around AD 600, before the Arab conquests shattered for ever what remained of the unity of the Roman world.

Download or read book The Failure of Augustus written by E.A. Judge and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustus did not mean to become the “Founder of the Roman Empire”. We only say this to make sense of what happened later. At the time, there were indeed suspicions. However, Augustus plugged on with his propaganda, with a proud and clear aim in mind. In the end, though, his own persistence defeated him. In all history, we must first find out what was true at the time. This book focuses always on the particular words of Augustus, and how his mind could be read from them. It is not concerned with any contemporary focus of research in Augustan studies, but offers, rather, a sustained argument over the primacy of the original sources in any historical interpretation. Behind that lies the question of truth itself in any history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elusive disposition of John's language has been noted by biblical scholars throughout the history of New Testament studies. The Fourth Gospel is seen as so simple to grasp and yet often pointing beyond itself and beckoning the reader to read deeper. Various socio-linguistic studies have explained this feature as the reflection of the sectarian tendencies in the Johannine Christianity. In his study Saeed Hamid-Khani questions these approaches as inadequate. In turn, he examines John's language within an exegetical and theological framework. He argues that the Sitz im Leben of Johannine language was an environment in which the Hebrew Scriptures were the dominant conceptual force for both the Jews and the Christians. In this context he argues that the essential function of John's enigmatic language is wedded to the Evangelist's purpose in writing the Gospel: namely a steadfast focus upon setting forth that Jesus is the Christ according to the witness of Israel's Scriptures. It is here in these echoes and thematic allusions to the Scriptures that we find the answer to the function and significance of John's unique language: i.e., Jesus is the Messiah, the Saviour of the world, and he is the visible image of the invisible God, the embodiment of the self-revelation of God according to the Scriptures. However, these truths are concealed from the undiscerning and are only revealed by the spirit of God to those who are born of God.

Book excerpt: The Interpretation of REVELATION by the Sanhedrin, Romans, and Disciples of Jesus Christ Inspired by the Devil, the Sanhedrin and Romans had slain the Lord Jesus, and now they were brutally murdering His disciples to rid the earth of His kingdom. Jesus had instructed His saints, Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord (Rom. 12:19). Finally, the time for His vengeance had comethe avenging of the blood of His saints was at hand! He sent His hidden message in Revelation to His disciples to get out of His way. Then Almighty God filled the vials of wrath until they overflowed with His fury. The angels in heaven gave a harkening blast on the trumpets of war, shaking the very foundations of heaven and earth. And the armies of the Lord prepared for battle, for the great day of Gods wrath had come, and no one would be able to stand against it. This book will teach you the interpretation of Revelation for the three target audiences, along with all the metaphors Jesus strategically selected for His greatest parable of all: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse The Beast of the Land The Beast of the Sea with Seven Heads and Ten Horns The Land, Sea and Trees The Mark of the Beast, and the Number of His Name: 666 The Two Super Witnesses The Plague of Locusts The Seven Seals, Seven Trumpets and Seven Vials of Wrath The Three Heavens The New Heaven and New Earth, and New Jerusalem And much more!
Book Synopsis The Kingship of Jesus in the Gospel of John by : Sehyun Kim
Download or read book The Kingship of Jesus in the Gospel of John written by Sehyun Kim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies kingship with reference to the Johannine Jesus. Postcolonialism leads us to an avenue from which to read this Gospel in the more complex and wider context of the hybridized Jewish and Greco-Roman worlds of the Roman Empire in the first century CE. This provides a new perspective on the kingship of the Johannine Jesus, whose kingly identity is characterized by hybridized christological titles. For the Johannine readers in the first century, who were exploited, oppressed, yet at odds with both the colonizer and the colonized in the Roman Empire, this Gospel was deemed to reveal his identity. Using many christological titles, it presented Jesus as the universal king going beyond the Jewish Messiah(s) and the Roman emperors and also as the decolonizer who came to “his own” world to liberate his people from the darkness. In this respect, the ideology of the Johannine emphasizes that love, peace, freedom, service of the center for the margins, and forgiveness are the ruling forces in the new world where Jesus reigns as king. Raising an awareness of these ideologies, John’s gospel asks readers to overcome the conflicting world shrouded in darkness, thenceforth entering the new Johannine world.
Download or read book The Beast written by Jonathan P. Leonard and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identity of the Beast rising out of the sea in Revelation 13 is a hotly debated topic. Some believe the Beast has come already, while others believe that he is alive today, waiting to take his position of power. One of the key passages cited by all groups is in Revelation 13:1–8, 18. Yet the imagery of the book of Revelation has opened it to misinterpretation by modern-day interpreters who are unfamiliar with the apocalyptic literary genre. Jonathan Leonard explains the meaning of the Beast of Revelation 13:1–8, 18 in its first century context and its relevance to members of the early church. The imagery of the Beast of Revelation is not seen as instilling fear into the hearts of believers concerning the future, but serves as a stinging critique of imperial power, idolatry, and oppression. When properly viewed in its original context, the unveiling of the Beast can transcend the first century and serve to strengthen the testimony of the church of Jesus Christ in the present day.
