His father is going with a band of men to Mexico, where they will regroup, rearm, and continue the fight against the Yankees. Tyler is stunned. For four years he's dreamed of seeing his father again, and he can't let go of that dream. There's only one thing Tyler can do -- go get his father and bring him home. Tyler starts his trek from Missouri to the Rio Grande alone, but he quickly gains a companion -- a strange dog made mean by cruelty but tamed by hunger and Tyler's desperately lonely need for him. Tyler names him Bigger. The journey is long and hard but, with Bigger by his side, possible. Tyler might make it all the way to the Rio Grande. He might even find his father. But most importantly, Bigger helps Tyler realize that some dreams might not be worth holding on to.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relentlessly self-promoting amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann took full credit for discovering Homer's Troy over one hundred years ago, and since then generations have thrilled to the tale of his ambitions and achievements. But Schliemann gained this status as an archaeological hero partly by deliberately eclipsing the man who had launched his career. Now, at long last, Susan Heuck Allen puts the record straight in this fascinating archaeological adventure that restores the British expatriate Frank Calvert to his rightful place in the story of the identification and excavation of Hisarlík, the site now thought to be Troy as described in the Iliad. Frank Calvert had lived in the Troad—in the northwest corner of Asia Minor—excavating there for fifteen years before Schliemann arrived and learning the local topography well. He was the first archaeologist to test the hypothesis that Hisarlík was the Troy of Hector and Helen. So that he would have unrestricted access to the site, he purchased part of the mound and was the first archaeologist to conduct excavations there. Running out of funds, he later interested Schliemann in the site. The thankless Schliemann stole Calvert's ideas, exploited his knowledge and advice, and finally stole Calvert's glory, in part by slandering him and denigrating his work. Allen corrects the record and does justice to a man who was a victim of his own integrity while giving a balanced treatment of Schliemann's true accomplishments. This meticulously researched book tells the story of Frank Calvert's development as an archaeologist, his adventures and discoveries. It focuses on the twists and turns of his turbulent relationship with the perfidious Schliemann, the resulting gains for archaeology, and the successful conclusion of their common quest. Allen has brought together a wide range of relevant published material as well as unpublished sources from archives, diaries, letters, and personal interviews to tell this gripping story.

Download or read book Seeds of the Willow written by Chong Lewe and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the few early Korean foreign students in America, the author has attempted to describe his experience in America as a foreign student, and eventually as a naturalized Asian-American in the 'Melting Pot'that is called the American society. This book is also his Personal Testimonial, which attests to the fact that the author has not ever personally experienced any blatant Racial Discrimination against him in all of his fifty-years of living in these United States, as a student and as a professional person, from Kalamazoo, Michigan to Houston, Texas, and from Walla Walla, Washington to Gaithersburg, Maryland. "Through the author's own personal story, he felt compelled to tell the world that there are many happy minority immigrants' stories, in contrast to many of the complaints and polarizing arguments about how minority groups are discriminated against and are deprived of the opportunity to improve their lot by the majority group in American society." It is true also that there exists one form or another of prejudices and discriminations in the American society. However, it is this author's conviction and experience that there are no insurmountable obstacles for minority immigrants to achieve their dreams and goals in this promised-land of ours, if one strives hard enough. It is also the belief of this author that in order to fully appreciate the opportunities and to make the most of those opportunities, one must be assimilated into American society completely and whole-heartedly without reservation. This does not mean to lose one's heritage completely, but rather to contribute to the unique qualities of each heritage to making of the 'Whole' in the true spirit of our nation, 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'.
