Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Callendar Steam Tables Properties of Steam, in which the theory of steam and experimental methods of investigation are more fully discussed and illustrated. The principal formulae and numerical results are here summarised, together with directions for using the diagram. The tables are founded on experimental measurements (1) of the specific heat of water and the mechanical equivalent (2) of the specific heat of steam by the Author's continuous electric method; (3) of the adiabatic index with a compensated platinum thermometer; (4) of the joule-thomson cooling-effect with a differential throttling calorimeter. The theory and results of these experiments were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society and in the Encyclopedia Britannica.* The properties of steam were represented by the simplest equations which could be chosen to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics, and at the same time to agree with experiment over the range required in practice. The theory was verified by calculating the values of the saturation pressure, which were found to agree with the observations of Regnault. Book Synopsis Tables of the Properties of Steam and Other Vapors and Temperature-Entropy Table (Classic Reprint) by : Cecil Hobart Peabody
Download or read book Tables of the Properties of Steam and Other Vapors and Temperature-Entropy Table (Classic Reprint) written by Cecil Hobart Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables of the Properties of Steam and Other Vapors and Temperature-Entropy Table Tm; Tables of the Properties of Steam were calculated twenty years ago to accompany the author's Thermodynamics of the Steam Engine; since that time important experimental investigations have been made by Callendar, Barnes, Knoblauch and Thomas. The tables have been recomputed, introducing this information and with certain changes which will be found to facilitate their use. All the tables for saturated steam have columns of entropy due to vaporization; and the table in metric units has been made into a conversion table by aid of which proper ties can be found in either metric or English units or a combination of the two systems may be used. Book Synopsis Properties of Steam and Ammonia (Classic Reprint) by : G. A. Goodenough
Download or read book Properties of Steam and Ammonia (Classic Reprint) written by G. A. Goodenough and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Properties of Steam and Ammonia The older tables of the properties of steam were neither consistent nor accurate. The tabular values were calculated from empirical formu las based chie y on Regnault's data, and the necessity of consistency was not recognized. Two sets of tables have been based on the general theory developed by Callendar. These are absolutely consistent, but in the light of the knowledge acquired from the Munich experiments, they can no longer be regarded as accurate. In certain tables that have appeared recently have been embodied the results of the Munich experi ments and also the researches of Dr. Davis on the total heat of steam. These tables are undoubtedly far more accurate than the earlier tables, but, having a more or less empirical basis, they are not rigorously con sistent. The tables of the properties of saturated and superheated steam here presented are based on a new formulation the essential features of which are discussed in the first section of the book. A more complete exposi tion will be found in Bulletin No. 75, Engineering Experiment Station, University of Illinois. The new theory correlates perfectly the experi ments on the volume and specific heat of superheated steam; it gives values of the heat content of saturated steam that agree with those deduced by Davis from the throttling experiments; and, in general, it meets satisfactorily all the tests furnished by the available experimental evidence. The tables derived from the formulation are necessarily con sistent, and they are at the same time extremely accurate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy Stewart Callendar (1898–1964) is noted for identifying, in 1938, the link between the artifcial production of carbon dioxide and global warming. Today this is called the “Callendar Efect. ” He was one of Britain’s leading steam and combustion engineers, a specialist in infrared physics, author of the standard reference book on the properties of steam at high tempe- tures and pressures, and designer of the burners of the notable World War II airfeld fog dispersal system, FIDO. He was keenly interested in weather and climate, taking measurement so accurate that they were used to correct the ofcial temperature records of central England and collecting a series of worldwide weather data that showed an unprecedented warming trend in the frst four decades of the twentieth century. He formulated a coherent theory of infrared absorption and emission by trace gases, established the nineteenth-century background concentration of carbon dioxide, and - gued that its atmospheric concentration was rising due to human activities, which was causing the climate to warm. Callendar’s contributions to climatology led the way in the mid-twentie- century transition from the traditional practice of gathering descriptive c- mate statistics to the new and exciting feld of climate dynamics. In the frst half of the twentieth century, the carbon dioxide theory of climate change xiv Introduction had fallen out of favor with climatists.
