Book excerpt: "At a pace matching the flashing lights on a 911 console, Caroline Burau puts us in the hot seat and shows us the madness, the sadness, and the gallows humor of a profession that serves and protects in ways we never dream. And by telling us what goes on when the microphone is silent, she has taken the voice on the radio and given it heart." Michael Perry, author of Population 485 and Truck: A Love Story "A witty, gritty look at life on the receiving end of our cries for help." Reader's Digest (Editor's Choice) You answer a call from a fourteen-year-old boy asking for someone to arrest his mother, who is smoking crack in their bathroom. You talk with him until the cops arrive, making sure there are no weapons around and learning that his favorite subject in school is lunch. Five minutes later, you have to deal with someone complaining about his neighbor's clarinet practice. What is it like to be on the receiving end of desperate calls for help . . . every day? Caroline Burau, a former newspaper reporter and nursing student who couldn't stand the sight of blood, takes a job as an emergency dispatcher because she likes helping people. But on-the-job training at the comm center proves to be more than she bargained for. As she adjusts to a daily life of catastrophe and comedy, domestics and drunks, cops and robbers, junk food and sarcasm, lost cats and suicides, she discovers that crisis can become routine, that coworkers can be mean--that she must continue to care and, at times, learn how to let go. "The day may come when I have to dial 911. I hope to God that the person who answers is Caroline Burau or someone like her. Funny, honest, and elegantly simple, this book left me with a sense of grace and hope."--Alison McGhee, author of Shadow Baby, Rainlight, Was It Beautiful? and Falling Boy Caroline Burau is a 911 dispatch operator for the police and fire departments in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

Book Synopsis Dial 911 ... and Die by : Richard W. Stevens
Download or read book Dial 911 ... and Die written by Richard W. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do the police owe a duty to protect citizens from criminal attack? This book explains why, in most of the United States, the answer is "no." In most cases the law does not even require the police to respond to emergency 911 calls. This compact paperback devotes one short chapter to each of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the District of Columbia and Canada, to show how statutes and court decisions consistently hold that the police generally have "no duty" to protect individual citizens. Most chapters reveal the true stories, taken from published court opinions, that describe the plight of citizens who relied solely upon their telephone and police response for emergency help against a violent criminal. Not only did those crime victims not get help, the local government and police escaped legal responsibility for failing to help those victims. Highlighting the importance of personal and family defense, the book also retells 45 stories about people who successfully defended themselves long before any police could help. Footnotes provide full citations to primary and secondary legal sources for all laws and case decisions. 271 pages; footnotes.

Book Synopsis Rinse Off My Color and Call 911 by : Sher Lee Sommers
Download or read book Rinse Off My Color and Call 911 written by Sher Lee Sommers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through our home passed race car drivers, astronauts,a Walt Disney Director, the Australian and Chilean Davis Cup Teams, professional musicians, NBA coaches, players and presidents, a few criminals, Charles Goren, con artists and many, many relatives., and my daughters still managed to grow up to be fine people. The book is meant to be an entertaining and enlightening story telling just how my daughters became such wonderful adults. I was the first influence in their lives, but I believe that every person they met and every experience they had also had an influence on them. Their father was rich, a graduate from Harvard and a thirty one year old businessman, and I was a nineteen year old aspiring opera singer when we met. The book deals with the differences in our backgrounds, and our interests, and my trying to make it as a singer in New York, then getting married instead and creating a happy home in which to bring up children in spite of many untimely deaths, illnesses, disappointments and heart attacks, I have written about my ideas about raising children, but also about such wheelers and dealers, as my father in law, Charles B. Sommers, and Carl Fisher, the developer of Miami Beach and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with D.C. Stephenson, head of the Ku Klux Klan, with a lurid murder trial in Indianapolis, with Methodist Hospital, Clarian Health Care, racing cars and races, semesters abroad, our fabulous trips to Europe, Wimbledon, South America, and Trenton, and my opinions about just about every topic you can think of. I end with a chapter on the technology and events that has changed our lives and with my memories and thoughts about WWII and 9//11, and what I see for the future. My point is that all these things played a part in determining how my children grew to be such fine adults.
