Book excerpt: An analytical approach toward numerical calculation of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer on a sharp cone at incidence under supersonic and hypersonic flow conditions is presented. The theoretical model is based on implicit finite-difference integration of the governing three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer equations in conjunction with a three-dimensional scalar eddy-viscosity model of turbulence. Comparison is made of present theory with detailed experimental measurements of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer structure (velocity and temperature profiles), the surface streamline direction (obtained via an oil-flow technique) and surface heat-transfer rate.

Book excerpt: This report describes the results of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer calculations performed for the Eurovisc Workshop held in Berlin on 1 April 1982. It is shown that the present method, based on the Crank-Nicolson finite-difference scheme and a simple eddy-viscosity model for turbulence, yields satisfactory results provided regions of viscous-inviscid interaction, which were present in at least three of the four test cases, are avoided. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow field generated by a helicopter in flight is extremely complex and it has been recognized that interactions between different components can significantly affect helicopter performance. In particular, the effects of the interaction between the rotor wake and the helicopter fuselage are extremely difficult to predict and pose a challenging problem for researchers and designers in the rotorcraft area. In the present work, a model for the interaction of a rotor-tip-vortex with the airframe of a helicopter is developed. The present report describes the calculation of the motion of the tip-vortex toward the airframe, the calculation of the induced pressure on the airframe, and the calculation of the boundary-layer flow under the vortex during the time period prior to the time when a portion of the tip-vortex collides with the airframe.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall temperature effects on two- and three-dimensional high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layers are examined for representative high Reynolds number tunnel (HIRT) conditions relative to flight; also considered are hot-wall conditions relative to space shuttle subsonic and transonic flight during earth entry. Results show significant influences of wall-to-stagnation temperature ratio on the location of boundary-layer separation and the friction drag coefficient. The study also indicates how rapid model wall temperature during a typical testing period of 2 to 10 sec may be undesirable for HIRT testing since unsteady aerodynamic phenomena can be influenced by rapidly changing turbulent boundary-layer wall temperature levels. Download or read book Calculation of Three-dimensional Unsteady Transonic Flows Past Helicopter Blades written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finite difference code for predicting the high-speed flow over the advancing helicopter rotor is presented. The code solves the low-frequency, transonic small disturbance equation and is suitable for modeling the effects of advancing blade unsteadiness on blades of nearly arbitrary planform. The method employs a quasi-conservative mixed differencing scheme and solves the resulting difference equations by an alternative direction scheme. Computed results show good agreement with experimental blade pressure data and illustrate some of the effects of varying the rotor planform. The flow unsteadiness is shown to be an indispensible part of a transonic solution. It is also shown that, close to the tip at high advance ratio, cross-flow effects can significantly affect the solution. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the analysis of boundary layers on rotors in forward flight, the essential features of the flow were demonstrated by means of relatively simple analytical solutions. Within the framework of the small crossflow and quasi-steady approximations, which are valid over most of the rotor, the laminar flow is now well understood. An important exception is the detailed structure of the flow near the separation lines, where recourse to numerical analysis of the full three-dimensional, unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are required if to predict accurately the maximum lift that can be produced by a rotor. Download or read book Calculation of Three-dimensional Boundary Layers on Bodies at Incidence written by V. C. Patel and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional thin boundary-layer equations for laminar and turbulent flows are solved by two different numerical schemes. The methods are applied to the flow over bodies of revolution at incidence and the results are compared with the available experimental data in order to study the range of validity of the classical boundary-layer approximations in regions of increasing circumferential gradients and flow reversal associated with the early stages of a free-vortex type of separation. Comparison with the DFVLR 6:1 spheroid data of Meier et al and the 4:1 combination-body data of Ramaprian, Patel and Choi indicate that the methods perform well in regions where the boundary layer remains thin but the predictions deteriorate as the boundary layer thickens. The results point out the need for the development of methods of handle thick boundary layers and viscous-inviscid interactions. (Author).
