Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleon optical model is widely used to calculate the elastic scattering cross-sections and polarisations for the interaction of neutrons and protons with atomic nuclei. The optical model potentials not only describe the scattering but also provide the wave functions needed to analyse a wide range of nuclear reactions. They also unify many aspects of nuclear reactions and nuclear structure. This book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the subject and a selection of papers by the author describing the optical model in detail. It contains full references to the original literature with many examples of the application of the model to the analysis of experimental data.

Book excerpt: Written by authors with an international reputation, acknowledged expertise and teaching experience, this is the most up-to-date resource on the field. The text is clearly structured throughout so as to be readily accessible, and begins by looking at scattering of a scalar particle by one-dimensional systems. The second section deals with the scattering of neutrons with spin in one-dimensional potentials, while the third treats dynamical diffraction in three-dimensional periodic media. The final two sections conclude with incoherent and small angle scattering, and some problems of quantum mechanics. With its treatment of the theories, experiments and applications involved in neutron optics, this relevant reading for nuclear physicists and materials scientists alike.

Book excerpt: Neutron scattering experiments provide direct access to the forces experienced by nucleons in the nuclear environment. Due to the experimental difficulty of cross section measurements with neutrons, isotopically-resolved neutron scattering cross sections are sorely needed as inputs for many nuclear models. This dissertation presents the results from a campaign of isotope-specific neutron total cross section measurements on 16,18O, 58,64Ni, 112,124Sn, and 103Rh from 3-450 MeV and elastic scattering differential cross section measurements on 112,nat,124Sn at 11 and 17 MeV. Equipped with these new data and with computational improvements to the Dispersive Optical Model (DOM), we present DOM treatments of 16,18O, 40,48Ca, 58,64Ni, 112,124Sn, and 208Pb. From these analyses across the nuclear chart, we place additional constraints on the neutron-proton asymmetry-dependence of nuclear properties, extract essential bound-state quantities including spectroscopic factors and neutron skins, and identify experimental data sets most needed for further enhancing our understanding of nuclear structure.

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential cross sections for the (p, n) reactions to the isobaric analog states (IAS) of 232Th and 238U targets were measured at 26 and 27 MeV. The analysis of the data was done in conjunction with the proton elastic and inelastic (2, 4, 6+) differential cross sections measured at 26 MeV. Because collective effects are important in this mass region, deformed coupled-channels calculations were carried out for the simultaneous analysis of the proton and neutron outgoing channels. The sensitivity of the calculations was studied with respect to the optical model parameters used in the calculations, the shape of the nuclear charge distribution, the type of coupling scheme assumed among the levels, the magnitude of the deformation parameters, and the magnitude of the isovector potentials, V1 and W1. A Lane model-consistent analysis of the data was used to infer optical potential parameters for 6- to 7-MeV neutrons. The neutron elastic differential cross sections obtained from these calculations are compared with measurements available in the literature, and with results obtained using neutron parameters from global sets reported at these energies. 7 figures, 3 tables.

The IAEA Coordinated Research Program on {open_quotes}Reference Input Parameter Library for Evaluation of Nuclear Data for Application in Nuclear Technology{close_quotes} aims to release a reference input file of various types of parameters for the evaluation of nuclear cross sections using nuclear model codes. Included in the parameter files are a collection of optical model potentials that are available in the literature to evaluate these cross sections. As part of this research program we assess the applicability of these potentials over a range of target mass and projectile energy.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To satisfy nuclear data requirements for fission-product nuclei, Hauser-Feshbach statistical calculations with preequilibrium corrections for neutron-induced reactions on isotopes of Se, Kr, Sr, Zr, Mo, Sn, Xe, and Ba between 0.001 and 20 MeV. Spherical neutron optical parameters were determined by simultaneous fits to resonance data and total cross sections. Isospin coefficients appearing in the optical potentials were determined through analysis of the behavior of s- and p-wave strengths as a function of mass for a given Z. Gamma-ray strength functions, determined through fits to stable-isotope capture data, were used in the calculation of capture cross sections and gamma-ray competition to particle emission. The resulting (n, .gamma.), (n, n'), (n,2n), and (n,3n) cross sections, the secondary neutron emission spectra, and angular distributions calculated for 19 fission products will be averaged to provide a resulting ENDF-type fission-product neutronics file. 11 references.

Book excerpt: Distinct minima and maxima in the neutron total cross section uncertainties were observed in model calculations using spherical optical potential. We found this oscillating structure to be a general feature of quantum mechanical wave scattering. Specifically, we analyzed neutron interaction with 56Fe from 1 keV up to 65 MeV, and investigated physical origin of the minima. We discuss their potential importance for practical applications as well as the implications for the uncertainties in total and absorption cross sections.

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the neutron optical potential on nuclei near mass-140 was begun to extend the energy range and improve the precision of previous neutron total cross section measurements. The extended energy range of this measurement reveals maxima and minima in the total cross section that are evidence of the nuclear Ramsauer effect. A 100-MeV linear accelerator is used to produce a continuum of neutron energies from a Ta-Be conversion target. A 250-meter flight path is used to measure neutron energies by the time-of-flight method. Transmission data for 14°Ce and transmission ratios for 142Ce, 141Pr, and 139La relative to 14°Ce were obtained. The 14°Ce data have a precision of 1 to 3% and the ratios are obtained with a precision of about 0.3%. To analyze these total cross section data a computer code was developed to calculate the total elastic, reaction, and differential elastic scattering cross sections for a neutron interacting with a nucleus. The interaction is represented by a spherically symmetric complex potential that includes spin-orbit coupling. The parameters of this potential were adjusted to approximate the 14°Ce total cross over the energy range from 2.5 to 60 MeV. The energy dependence of these parameters is described. 5 figures, 1 table.
