Book Synopsis The Byzantine Rite by : Robert F. Taft
Download or read book The Byzantine Rite written by Robert F. Taft and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written regarding the western liturgy; the same cannot be said of the Byzantine liturgy. Father Taft contributes to a remedy of that shortfall through this work. In it he traces the origins of the Byzantine Rite during its period of formation: from its earliest recorded beginnings until the end of Byzantium (1453 c.e.). While the rite has undergone some change in the period since then, its outlines remain essentially the same.
Book Synopsis A Commentary on the Divine Liturgy by : Nicolaus Cabasilas
Download or read book A Commentary on the Divine Liturgy written by Nicolaus Cabasilas and published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nicholas Cabasilas' Commentary on the Divine Liturgy is a remarkable product of Byzantium's last great flowering of theology. The work has long been essential reading for specialists in the fields of comparative liturgy and history of liturgy, since Cabasilas comments in detail on the Byzantine rite of his day and is able to draw comparisons with the Roman liturgy as well. The work is also invaluable for all those who wish to understand more about the theory and practice of worship in the Orthodox Church. In this edition the text of the Commentary, translated by J. M. Hussey and P. A. McNulty, has been supplemented by a brief foreword which places Cabasilas' work in its historical context. A helpful introduction by R. M. French describes the celebration of the liturgy in the Orthodox Church."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book Synopsis Challenges and Perspectives by : Klaas Spronk
Download or read book Challenges and Perspectives written by Klaas Spronk and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of Byzantine manuscripts is fascinating but also confusing. Although they play an important part in modern studies on the history of Christian liturgy and on the textual history of the Bible, a clear overview of the vast amount of these manuscripts in their many different forms is lacking. A new approach in their cataloguing is called for. The present volume brings together a number of specialists in the field of Byzantine, liturgical and Biblical studies with the aim to develop a new methodology for codicological research of the Byzantine manuscripts, taking seriously the original environment of the integral codices in the monasteries and the churches in which they were manufactured and functioned.

Book Synopsis Performing the Gospels in Byzantium by : Roland Betancourt
Download or read book Performing the Gospels in Byzantium written by Roland Betancourt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the Gospel text from script to illustration to recitation, this study looks at how illuminated manuscripts operated within ritual and architecture. Focusing on a group of richly illuminated lectionaries from the late eleventh century, the book articulates how the process of textual recitation produced marginalia and miniatures that reflected and subverted the manner in which the Gospel was read and simultaneously imagined by readers and listeners alike. This unique approach to manuscript illumination points to images that slowly unfolded in the mind of its listeners as they imagined the text being recited, as meaning carefully changed and built as the text proceeded. By examining this process within specific acoustic architectural spaces and the sonic conditions of medieval chant, the volume brings together the concerns of sound studies, liturgical studies, and art history to demonstrate how images, texts, and recitations played with the environment of the Middle Byzantine church.
Book Synopsis The Presanctified Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite by : Stefanos Alexopoulos
Download or read book The Presanctified Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite written by Stefanos Alexopoulos and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Presanctified Liturgy, a communion service attached to vespers, is an office peculiar to the period of Great Lent in the Byzantine liturgical tradition. It is the ambition of this study to trace the origins, the evolution and history of the Presanctified Liturgy in the Byzantine liturgical tradition. The method of comparative liturgy and structural analysis of liturgical units is followed. The book presents a thorough investigation of sources from the early Church that could point to the origins of Presanctified Liturgy, and examines the occurrence of the Presanctified Liturgy in the other Christian traditions. Heavily drawing upon the manuscript tradition it examines in depth the text of the Presanctified Liturgy itself, tracing the evolution of its structural components throughout history. The author argues that three dynamics have been behind the evolution and growth of the Presanctified Liturgy: imitation, conservatism, and differentiation.
