Book excerpt: "The beginnings of modern literary scholarship in Britain are studied in this volume, which traces the emergence between about 1760 and 1810 in the work of Richard Hurd, Thomas Percy, Thomas Warton, Joseph Ritson, George Ellis, and Sir Walter Scott of a serious scholarly approach to the English metrical romances of the middle ages. These scholars, however, were not concerned solely with the rediscovery and editing of the original texts which two centuries of growing antiquarian research had ignored. Almost without exception men of letters themselves, they desired also to recover the 'world of fine fabling' in which the classical temper of the preceding age had preferred the virtues of 'good sense', and they consciously put their discoveries to the service of modern poetry, or urged that they should be so used. The consequences of this were far-reaching, and as he considers in detail the individual achievements of his principal subjects Dr Johnston does not neglect to bring out the nature and importance of the contributions they made to the general culture and literature of their own day and of the nineteenth century."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in 1973, the manuscript for this unpublished and untitled Jacobean play is transcribed in five hands. A long romance on the life and deeds of Tom a Lincoln, or the Red Rose Knight, it dates from around 1611 and appears to contain allusions to or echoes of Henry IV, Hamlet, King Lear, and Shakespeare's late plays. One scene is imitated from Thomas Heywood's Rape of Lucrece (1608), and this, together with the evidence of its vocabulary, raises the possibility that the play was written by Heywood. How much of the play is parody is not certain. In this edition, Proudfoot describes the manuscript and hands in detail, and provides contexts for the play's genre and authorship. There are texts of eleven other short pieces in the manuscript, including memoranda, and poems in English and Welsh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-Raphaelitism was the first avant-garde movement in Britain. It shocked its first audience, and as it modulated into Aestheticism it continued to disturb the British public. This interdisciplinary study traces the sources of this critical reaction to the representation of the body in painting and poetry from the work of Millais and Morris to that of Rossetti and Burne-Jones. The book also explores how reactions were conditioned by such late nineteenth-century anxieties as fear of cholera and hatred of Catholicism, fascination with the fallen woman, horror at the `shrieking sisterhood' of emancipated women, and even the terror of psycho-sexual diseases.
