Book Synopsis The Tallgrass Prairie Reader by : John Price
Download or read book The Tallgrass Prairie Reader written by John Price and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2014-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of literature from and about the tallgrass bioregion. It focuses on autobiographical nonfiction including adventure narrative, spiritual reflection, childhood memoir, Native American perspectives, literary natural history, humor, travel writing and reportage. Writings by early explorers are followed by works of nineteenth-century authors that reflect the fear, awe, reverence, and thrill of adventure of the time. After 1900, following the destruction of the majority of tallgrass, much of the writing became nostalgic, elegiac, and mythic. A new environmental consciousness asserted itself midcentury, as personal responses to tallgrass were increasingly influenced by larger ecological perspectives. Preservation and restoration emerged as major themes. Early twenty-first-century writings demonstrate an awareness of tallgrass environmental history and the need for citizens, including writers, to remember and to help save our once magnificent prairies.

Download or read book The Folks written by Ruth Suckow and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 1992-02 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an introspective, poignant portrait of an American family during a time of sweeping changes. Now nearly sixty years after it first appeared, Suckow's finest work still displays a thorough realism in its characters' actions and aspirations; the uneasy compromises they are forced to make still ring true. Suckow's talent for retrospective analysis comes to life as she examines her own people—Iowans, descendants of early settlers—through the lives of the Ferguson family, living in the fictional small town of Belmond, Iowa. Using her gift of creating three-dimensional, living characters, Suckow focuses on personal differences within the family and each member's separate struggle to make sense of past and present, to confront a pervasive sense of loss as a way of life disappears.

Download or read book That Tree written by and published by . This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (As seen on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood) Trees resonate deeply in the souls of millions of people. A lonely bur oak in the middle of a southwest Wisconsin cornfield spoke to photographer Mark Hirsch. That Tree spoke of hidden beauty and hope. It spoke of patience and dedication. It even gave him personal healing he wasn't aware he needed. Thus every day for the next year Hirsch would quietly attempt to coax the stories from That Tree. Hirsch, after purchasing his first iPhone, scoffed at the idea that a professional photographer would find the camera inside his new phone interesting in any way. A good friend goaded him into trying it and one day in the middle of a January snow storm Hirsch took his first picture of That Tree. He'd driven past That Tree every day for 19 years and never took a picture. That would change. Now a passionate Facebook following of 33,000+ people look for Hirsch's daily picture of That Tree and countless media outlets have featured Hirsch's story including NPR, NBC News, Le Monde, The Guardian, Sierra Club, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and many more. That Tree is hardcover, 192 pages, measuring 10x10 inches and is published by Press Syndication Group. 2013.
Download or read book Townships written by Michael Martone and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It would not seem so important for southern writers to justify writing about the South--that region is defined. Midwestern writers, however, must first define their region, inhabit it, so that writing about it through fiction and poetry will become as natural as it is for writers in other necks of the national world." "Townships seeks to prepare the ground for that work, using the very ground itself as a starting place. Each contributor has written about his or her specific township of childhood or a bordered region that defined a first notion of place in the world. Complementing this diversity in writer and subject are Raymond Bial's striking and evocative photographs, a visual essay that echoes the sensibility of the township with grace and precision."--[book jacket].
