Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Building of the Ship While abroad he had lost his young wife, and after a season of chastening had again married and settled down into the quiet life of Craigie house, which was to be his home for almost a half-century. Several volumes of his poems, including "Evangeline," had appeared; the public were already talking about him; and fame was assured. The suggestion for "The Building of the Ship" came from Schiller's "Song of the Bell," which Longfellow had read with delight and which supplied him not only with the idea but also with an effective metre in which to clothe it, - long lines, expressing calm reflection, short lines expressing action, impatience, or excitement. Like its German prototype, "The Building of the Ship" presents the constructive idea, the thought of joyous and successful labor, the union of strength and beauty, and the analogy in human life, namely, the union of maid and lover. But here, as always, Longfellow borrowed nothing that he did not adorn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Building of the Ship, and Other Poems Mr. Longfellow's birthplace was in a sea-port, and his youth and early manhood were passed in intimate association with sea-life. In his half-autobiographical reverie My Lost Youth he records something of the effect which these associations had upon his mind. Af terward, when living in Cambridge, he was wont to spend his summers at his cottage in Nahant. One after another there occurred to him poems which had their suggestion in sea-scenes; and in April, 1849, when cast ing about for a convenient grouping for a volume of his uncollected poems, he found that a natural one was in dicated by the double title By the Fireside and By the Seaside. There were hardly enough poems to make a satisfactory volume, and he was dispirited by his appar ent inability to write a poem of any importance. He wrote in his diary: No new thing to start the stag nant current. Oh for some great idea to refresh me! I am pondering on a continuation of Hyperion. His wish, as he records it, reminds us of the saying of Her der, a German poet, when lying wearily in sickness Give me a great thought, that I may quicken myself with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Ship Building: Theoretical and Practical IN offering this work on ship-building to officers of the naval service and to others of my profession, the author has no apology to make for its production. Information on this subject has been sought from every available source, with a view of rendering this work useful for the purposes of elementary instruction as well as to the practical builder. The result of the undertaking is hum bly submitted, trusting that it will meet with indulgence for such faults as it may contain. The First Division has been compiled chiefly from Rankine's ship-building, Theoretical and Practical. Credit for articles taken from other authors is given in foot-notes. The Second Division is based upon the actual practice of the public and private ship-yards of this country but the treatises on this subject, of Rankine, Scott Russell, Knowles, and Fin cham have been freely used and portions incorporated whenever it seemed desirable to do so. Either a curved or straight line, or two lines may be drawn at equal distances from each other, called parallel lines, and continued on for an indefinite length, as long as the equal distance is preserved; but as soon as the distance between them is either increased or diminished, they cease to be parallel lines, as they must necessarily cross each other when the distance is diminished, or diverge from each other when the dis tance is increased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship-Building in Iron and Wood The question, however, whether ships with broadside guns, or ships with Captain Goles's revolving turrets, are to be preferred, still remains unsettled. It will perhaps be found that each of these classes will prove useful in a sphere of its own, and that what ever success may attend Captain Coles's ships, a considerable, if not the largest portion of our future fleet, must still consist of ships with broadside guns. It has been assumed by the advocates of turret ships, in their arguments in their favour, that in revolving turrets alone can guns of very large calibre be used; but it is submitted that this is not necessarily the case if the guns in the broadside of a ship be placed on a traversing platform worked by mechanical appliances; and it may be remarked, that though guns worked on board ship in the way here suggested might not each have individually the same extent of angular traverse as the guns in revolving turrets, yet as all screw ships have to some degree, by judicious management of the helm and the screw, the power of revolving almost on their own axis without going ahead, this objection is very much obviated. It must not be forgotten, also, that the ship to carry a turret, to prevent her being sunk or set on fire, must be as thoroughly protected as the ship to carry broadside guns and though possibly she may be built with her sides of a less height out of the water, yet for a sea-going vessel this advantage has many counter balancing evils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Ship-Building: With Practical Illustrations The Object of the communication was to institute an inquiry into the advantages to be derived from employ ing iron as a material for building ships, and to com pare such vessels with those built Of timber. The paper was subsequently published in the form of a pamphlet, with plates, and was favourably noticed in all the publications of the day. The time seems to be favourable for resuming the subject, and for laying before the public such further information as the last fifteen years have so amply provided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Wood Ship Construction Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, for use in its classes in Wood Shipbuilding. This text on wood shipbuilding was prepared by W. H. Curtis, Port land, Oregon, for the Education and Training Section of the Emergency Fleet Corporation. It is intended for the use of carpenters and others, who, though skilled in their work, lack the detail knowledge of ships necessary for the efficient performance of their work in the yard. Sea-going vessels are generally built according to the rules of some Classification Society, and all important construction and fastening details have to be passed upon by the Classification Society under whose inspection the vessel is to be built. Due to this fact, requirements may varv in detail from types of construction here explained. It is hoped, however, that this book may be helpful to shipbuilding classes and to individual men in the yard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ship-Building: Considered in Its Relations to the Laws of Nature, With Numerous Illustrations IN the following paper I have attempted to sum up the results Of more than a quarter of a century of observation and thought, as sisted by some limited experiments. Since 1834, when I performed for a short time the duties of Purser of a Steamer on Lake Ontario, on the banks of which I was born and brought up, I have had great Opportunities of witnessing the performances of steamers and other vessels. From that time to this, I have been an almost constant voyager on the great lakes and rivers of America, or the ocean. My travels by water, made in all sorts of vessels - from a fishing boat to the Leviathan - would more than quadruple the circumference of the earth. But in endeavouring to investigate the intricate question of resistance to ships, and the best form to overcome that resistance, I have to confess myself deficient in one very desirable, if not essential, qualification, namely, a high mathe matical education - having entirely neglected those studies after leaving school. My paper, therefore, though on a scientific subject, is not a scientific paper. Nevertheless, my experience has enabled me, as I believe, to see where so many learned and scientific men have failed in their efforts to master some of the many important questions connected with naval architecture. Under these circumstances, I trust that what I have to communicate will be received indulgently, and serve to point the way towards greater perfection in that profession which is doing so much to civilize and benefit mankind.
