Download or read book Extreme Heritage Management written by Godfrey Baldacchino and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicting and competing claims over the actual and imagined use of land and seascapes are exacerbated on islands with high population density. The management of culture and heritage is particularly tested in island environments where space is finite and the population struggles to preserve cultural and natural assets in the face of the demands of the construction industry, immigration, high tourism and capital investment. Drawn from extreme island scenarios, the ten case studies in this volume review practices and policies for effective heritage management and offer rich descriptive and analytic material about land-use conflict. In addition, they point to interesting, new directions in which research, public policy and heritage management intersect.

Download or read book Feudal Empires written by John F. Le Patourel and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1984-07-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of the selected papers of John La Patourel, considered by him to be the most representative of his body of work on the Norman and Plantaganet feudal empires. A striking feature of this anthology is the unity, modification and development of Professor Le Patourel's thought from his earliest to the latest essays included. Adopting a comparative framework and looking at topics such as the Channel Islands in the early middle ages, Normandy and England from 1066-1144, the Angevin Empire, the Hundred Years War and the Treaty of Brétigny, Professor La Patourel's work yields new insights and understandings in the history of 14th-century Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charts the history of Jersey and Guernsey, showing their crucial importance for England in the period. This book surveys the history of the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey in the late medieval and early modern periods, focusing on political, social and religious history. The islands' regular tangential appearance in histories ofEngland and the British Isles has long suggested the need for a more systematic account from the perspective of the islands themselves. Jersey and Guernsey were at the forefront of attempts by the English kings in the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries to maintain and extend their dominions in France. During the Wars of the Roses and the early Tudor period, they were frequently the refuge for claimants and plotters. Throughout the Reformation, they were a leading centre of Presbyterianism. Later, they were strategically important during the continental wars of Elizabeth's reign. The book charts all these events in a comprehensive way. In addition, it shows how the islands' relationship with central power in England varied but never saw a simple subjection to centralised uniform authority, how Jersey and Guernsey maintained links with Normandy, Brittany and France more widely, and how politics, religion, society and culture developed in the islands themselves. Tim Thornton is Professor of History and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at the University of Huddersfield, having been previously Dean of the School of Music, Humanities and Media. He is the author of Cheshire and the Tudor State and Prophecy, Politics and the People in Early Modern England, both of which are published by Boydell & Brewer.
