Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Builders of Florence It has been said already that this book has no pretension to completeness, and a glance at the table of contents will show that from among the many important and monumental buildings of Florence few indeed - only twelve - have been Chosen for treatment here. Be it so, the critic will say, but if few, yet why these few? Why go afield to Settimo and neglect the Badia of Florence? Why speak of Santa Maria Novella and find no word for Santa Croce? The reader, who sees his favourite Church or palace thus passed by, is asked to believe at least that an underlying reason and no mere caprice has dictated the Choice of which he com plains. History and architecture, let him remember, are the twin determinants here, and that not separately but together, inwoven in this book as they surely are in fact and in life. But so, it will be understood how Choice has been at once limited and directed, fixed on certain buildings as possessing both architectural and historic interest, and such as lend themselves readily as illustra tions of the City's life, whether commercial, ideal, or political. And, even in Florence, such buildings are not innumerable. His purpose thus cleared and defined, with some of the con sequences to which it has led in the minor yet important matters of selection and arrangement, the author, as he commits his work to the press, takes this welcome occasion to thank all those private and public persons and authorities whose kind help has assisted and encouraged its appearance. It proves that the architects who had been for some years in the service of the city and province of Florence, had been formerly established at Lucca, but from December 14, I 32 1, they were to be considered as permanently in the employ of the Florentines, and as such were permitted to provide a laborerium, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By'gone Florence: Firenze Scomparsa I would not by this deny the right of modern style and requirements to manifest itself in its own way, but as there is ample space where this may be done, allowing full swing to every architectural vagary and extravagance, without destroying the record of past ages. I only deplore the modern spirit which demoli shes without necessity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Florence The Object of this book, as its title indicates, is to give not only a general, but also a personal, impression Of Florence, as well as to suggest plans Which may be carried out during a short visit. The great picture-galleries and chief museums are, as a matter of course, Visited during the Rambles, but as so many regular guides and catalogues already exist, it has not been thought necessary or desirable to repeat the long lists of names and numbers in these pages, or to fill up space with detailed descriptions of these well-known collections. It is assumed that the Visitor will use an ordinary catalogue for this purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florence Some Tuscan Cities To presume to contribute, however modest an addition, to the immense wealth of literature devoted to Florence, her history, and her art, from the days of Villani and of Muratori down to the present time, appears indeed to be beyond the powers of an inexperienced pen. In undertaking these slight descriptions, my aim has been a simple one - to write an accompaniment, if such a term is applicable to letters, to the sketches with which this book is illustrated, and to touch superficially only, such debatable subjects as Tuscan architecture, painting, and sculpture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Davanzati Palace, Florence, Italy: A Restored Palace of the Fourteenth Century, Measured and Drawn Together With a Short Descriptive Text The large doorway in the south wall of the vestibule leads into the court, perhaps the most interesting feature of the entire palace. Here three octagonal columns and two engaged columns support four arches upon which rest the south and west walls of the upper stories of the court. Supported by corbels from this wall at the second, third and fourth floor levels, are balconies which form the exterior circulation for the rooms on these floors. On the north side of the court and on the fifth floor these balconies are supported on wood beams. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
