Book Synopsis The Doctrine of the Buddha by : George Grimm
Download or read book The Doctrine of the Buddha written by George Grimm and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1965 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition, revised and enlarged by the author himself, presents the old genuine Buddha doctrine with the aim of developing a new type of man, free from prejudices and intent on working out his own future with his self as the light. It represents not only the flower of Indian religious feeling and philosophy but also the crowning summit of religious introspection in general. The book deals with Truth as the theme and basis of the doctrine of the Buddha. It explains (1) Truth, Critrine, World and subject of suffering, (2) Truth of the arising of suffering, (3) Truth of the annihilation of suffering, (4) Truth of the path leading to the annihilation of suffering. The author presents the highest knowledge, the supreme reality to which Buddha is awakened, in so cogent a form, free from mythological and mythical clothing that it becomes positively self-evident to the reader. The study is prefixed with an Introduction and Appendix--as important as the text itself. Introduction answers the queries 'Who was the Buddha?' 'What is a Buddha?' and depicts the method of handing down the 'Marvel'. The Appendix deals with the Doctrine, the Metaphysics of the Buddha, Right cognition etc. There are four indexes: (1) Index of quotations from the Pali texts, (2) General Index, (3) Index of proper names (4) Pali and Sanskrit Index. An exhaustive Bibliography supplies the gap in our knowledge of Buddhist literature.

Book Synopsis Selfless Persons by : Steven Collins
Download or read book Selfless Persons written by Steven Collins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explain carefully and sympathetically the Buddhist doctrine of anatta ('not-self'), which denies the existence of any self, soul or enduring essence in human beings. The author relates this doctrine to its cultural and historical context, particularly to its Brahmanical background, and shows how the Theravada Buddhist tradition has constructed a philosophical and psychological account of personal identity and continuity on the apparently impossible basis of the denial of self.
Download or read book Buddhist Wisdom written by George Grimm and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1978 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Buddha followed this way so radi
Book Synopsis The Doctrine of the Buddha: The Religion of Reason by : George Grimm
Download or read book The Doctrine of the Buddha: The Religion of Reason written by George Grimm and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doctrine of the Buddha, originally published in 1920, is the fruit of George Grimm's intensive studies and practical realization of the Buddha's teaching. Grimm belongs to a minority of scholars of original Buddhism, along with Ananda Coomarawamy and C.A.F. Rhys Davids, who hold that the Buddha's doctrine of anatta has been grossly misunderstood, and he lays out the case for his interpretation herein. After completing his theological studies, George Grimm (1846-1945) devoted himself to jurisprudence and was characterized as 'Bavaria's most benevolent judge'. His interest in philosophical problems led him to study Schopenhauer's works, which in turn led him to Indological studies. In 1921 he founded the 'Altbuddhistische Gemeinde', (Old Buddhist Community). He spent the last twelve years of his life in the rural stillness of Upper Bavaria.

Book excerpt: “A terrific introduction to the Buddha’s teachings.” —Paul Blairon, California Literary Review This indispensable volume is a lucid and faithful account of the Buddha’s teachings. “For years,” says the Journal of the Buddhist Society, “the newcomer to Buddhism has lacked a simple and reliable introduction to the complexities of the subject. Dr. Rahula’s What the Buddha Taught fills the need as only could be done by one having a firm grasp of the vast material to be sifted. It is a model of what a book should be that is addressed first of all to ‘the educated and intelligent reader.’ Authoritative and clear, logical and sober, this study is as comprehensive as it is masterly.” This edition contains a selection of illustrative texts from the Suttas and the Dhammapada (specially translated by the author), sixteen illustrations, and a bibliography, glossary, and index. “[Rahula’s] succinct, clear overview of Buddhist concepts has never been surpassed. It is the standard.” —Library Journal

Book Synopsis Stepping Out of Self-Deception by : Rodney Smith
Download or read book Stepping Out of Self-Deception written by Rodney Smith and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent Insight Meditation teacher presents the Buddhist concept of “no-self” in an easy-to-understand way that will radically change your perspective on life Anatta is the Buddhist teaching on the nonexistence of a permanent, independent self. It’s a notoriously puzzling and elusive concept, usually leading to such questions as, “If I don’t have a self, who’s reading this sentence?” It’s not that there’s no self there, says Rodney Smith. It’s just that the self that is reading this sentence is a configuration of elements that at one time did not exist and which at some point in the future will disperse. Even in its present existence, it’s more a temporary arrangement of components rather than something solid. Anatta is a truth the Buddha considered to be absolutely essential to his teaching. Smith shows that understanding this truth can change the way you relate to the world, and that the perspective of selflessness is critically important for anyone involved in spiritual practice. Seeing it can be the key to getting past the idea that spirituality has something to do with self-improvement, and to accessing the joy of deep insight into reality.

Book Synopsis The Trouble with Buddhism by : Robert M. Ellis
Download or read book The Trouble with Buddhism written by Robert M. Ellis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critique of Buddhism by a philosopher with about 20 years' experience of practising Buddhism. It attempts to judge Buddhism by the standards of its own key insight of the Middle Way. This book argues that Buddhism has often abandoned the Middle Way and allowed dogmatic metaphysical assumptions to take its place. The Buddha criticised appeals to metaphysics, yet many of the trappings of traditional Buddhism are built on it - whether these are karma and rebirth, the revelations of the enlightened and their scriptures, dependent origination, the interpretation of the Four Noble Truths, alienated idealisations of love, or rituals that celebrate metaphysics rather than insight. This is not a purely negative book, but an attempt at a balanced appraisal of Buddhism with praise as well as criticism. In the West we have an opportunity to evaluate Buddhism anew and reform it so that it best applies its own insights.

Download or read book The Selfless Mind written by Peter Harvey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This careful analysis of early Buddhist thought opens out a perspective in which no permanent Self is accepted, but a rich analysis of changing and potent mental processes is developed. It explores issues relating to the not-Self teaching: self-development, moral responsibility, the between-lives period, and the 'undetermined questions' on the world, on the 'life principle' and on the liberated one after death. It examines the 'person' as a flowing continuity centred on consciousness or discernment (vinnana) configured in changing minds-sets (cittas). The resting state of this is seen as 'brightly shining' - like the 'Buddha nature' of Mahayana thought - so as to represent the potential for Nirvana. Nirvana is then shown to be a state in which consciousness transcends all objects, and thus participates in a timeless, unconditioned realm.
