Book excerpt: Targeted for vengeance, a lawman finds his face on a wanted poster—and facing every cutthroat gunslinger willing to put a bullet through his badge for the bounty in Spur Award-winning author Larry D. Sweazy’s action-packed western adventure. Theodore Marberry is a grieving father. He groomed his daughter Jessica to take her rightful place among the wealthy families of St. Louis high society. Instead she married a common lawman whose tin star and sixgun made him worthy of her affection. She lost her life bringing his child into the world. Although bestowed with a beautiful granddaughter, Marberry is consumed with hate towards the baby’s father. U.S. DeputyMarshal Sam “Trusty” Dawson lives under a death sentence. His only crime was falling in love with a woman who saw more worth in his character than in his bank account. Now, every deadly manhunter, desperate bushwacker, and vicious outlaw throughout the Dakota Territory is looking to put the lawman six feet under to collect $1,000 in silver. But there aren’t enough guns or bullets to stop Trusty from rescuing his daughter—and bringing Marberry to justice . . . Praise for Larry D. Sweazy’s A Thousand Falling Crows "Sonny is an engaging, determined hero drawing on his Texas Ranger experience to find some measure of justice. Sure to attract fans of Westerns.” —Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW “Sweazy shows marked skill at incorporating the sere landscape of north Texas, with its punishing sun and rattlesnakes creeping out of rabbit holes..” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis Canoeing in the Wilderness by : Henry David Thoreau
Download or read book Canoeing in the Wilderness written by Henry David Thoreau and published by Binker North. This book was released on 1916 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chief attraction that inspired Thoreau to make this canoe trip was the primitiveness of the region. Here was a vast tract of almost virgin woodland, peopled only with a few loggers and pioneer farmers, Indians, and wild animals. No one could have been better fitted than Thoreau to enjoy such a region and to transmit his enjoyment of it to others. For though he was a person of culture and refinement, with a college education, and had for an intimate friend so rare a man as Ralph Waldo Emerson, he was half wild in many of his tastes and impatient of the restraints and artificiality of the ordinary social life of the towns and cities. He liked especially the companionship of men who were in close contact with nature, and in this book we find him deeply interested in his Indian guide and lingering fondly over the man's characteristics and casual remarks. The Indian retained many of his aboriginal instincts and ways, though his tribe was in most respects civilized. His home was in an Indian village on an island in the Penobscot River at Oldtown, a few miles above Bangor. Thoreau was one of the world's greatest nature writers, and as the years pass, his fame steadily increases. He was a careful and accurate observer, more at home in the fields and woods than in village and town, and with a gift of piquant originality in recording his impressions. The play of his imagination is keen and nimble, yet his fancy is so well balanced by his native common sense that it does not run away with him. There is never any doubt about his genuineness, or that what he states is free from bias and romantic exaggeration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled in the mountains of Southeast Oklahoma is the small community of Hochatown. It has a rich and colorful history. It began as the final destination for many Choctaw Native Americans after their long journey along the trail of tears. Hochatown was named after a Choctaw family that settled in the area with the last name of Hocha. The town grew and thrived over the years right after Oklahoma statehood in 1907, and was also given the title of "Moonshine" capitol of Oklahoma. The information contained here will give readers a glimpse into the "not so well known" history of the area. These are the tragic tales of the men and women who chose to make this place their home, long before the creation of a state park. Beavers Bend, a popular park located near the site of old hochatown, was purchased by area businessmen and constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. These stories tell about the tragedies, injustices and loss of life in a very remote part of Oklahoma. After reading them, you may have a greater understanding of what might cause unusual things to be seen or heard in the woods here late at night.
