Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable account of the collapse of the Old South and the final years of a young boy’s privileged but afflicted life. LeRoy Wiley Gresham was born in 1847 to an affluent slave-holding family in Macon, Georgia. After a horrific leg injury left him an invalid, the educated, inquisitive, perceptive, and exceptionally witty twelve-year-old began keeping a diary in 1860—just as secession and the Civil War began tearing the country and his world apart. He continued to write even as his health deteriorated until both the war and his life ended in 1865. His unique manuscript of the demise of the Old South is published here for the first time in The War Outside My Window. LeRoy read books, devoured newspapers and magazines, listened to gossip, and discussed and debated important social and military issues with his parents and others. He wrote daily for five years, putting pen to paper with a vim and tongue-in-cheek vigor that impresses even now, more than 150 years later. His practical, philosophical, and occasionally Twain-like hilarious observations cover politics and the secession movement, the long and increasingly destructive Civil War, family pets, a wide variety of hobbies and interests, and what life was like at the center of a socially prominent wealthy family in the important Confederate manufacturing center of Macon. The young scribe often voiced concern about the family’s pair of plantations outside town, and recorded his interactions and relationships with servants as he pondered the fate of human bondage and his family’s declining fortunes. Unbeknownst to LeRoy, he was chronicling his own slow and painful descent toward death in tandem with the demise of the Southern Confederacy. He recorded—often in horrific detail—an increasingly painful and debilitating disease that robbed him of his childhood. The teenager’s declining health is a consistent thread coursing through his fascinating journals. “I feel more discouraged [and] less hopeful about getting well than I ever did before,” he wrote on March 17, 1863. “I am weaker and more helpless than I ever was.” Morphine and a score of other “remedies” did little to ease his suffering. Abscesses developed; nagging coughs and pain consumed him. Alternating between bouts of euphoria and despondency, he often wrote, “Saw off my leg.” The War Outside My Window, edited and annotated by Janet Croon with helpful footnotes and a detailed family biographical chart, captures the spirit and the character of a young privileged white teenager witnessing the demise of his world even as his own body slowly failed him. Just as Anne Frank has come down to us as the adolescent voice of World War II, LeRoy Gresham will now be remembered as the young voice of the Civil War South. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wider Outlook: Beyond the World War Empire and her Allies will not be diminished, but stimulated, 5by the thought that the Allied Nations have now a great opportunity for serving Humanity - for promoting the future peace and progress of the civilized world. The preparation for peace which (at the moment of Writing) it is possible to make is not any adjustment of the rival claims of the nations at war. The fighting men must continue to do their part for some considerable period before statesmen can have any hope of effecting a settlement which would not invite a recurrence of strife in the future. The true preparation for peace consists in the preparing of men's minds to take a large and wise view of international relations, in urging the publicists and politicians of the Treaty Powers to exchange views among themselves and with representatives of neutral States on the future regulation of the world, and especially in remembering that no ad hoc settlement of inter national affairs can ever be final - that What is really wanted is a system for adjusting future differences of nations, whenever and wherever they may arise. It is not too early to turn our thoughts to these matters. It may be too late when the war is ended; when citizens and statesmen are full of pride in national achievements, conscious of their really enormous debt to army and navy, and naturally disposed to defer to militarist counsels. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Neglected Aspects of War HE cause of Universal Peace, upon which so much of the world's attention has been fixed this summer by the Hague Conference, can progress surely to success only upon the same conditions by Which any other movement for good reaches its goal. It will not be advanced, but retarded, by neglecting diligently and calmly to consider facts, to look them straight in the face; to see things as they are, and not merely as one would wish to see them now, or as it is possible that our descendants may be privileged to see in a future happier age. Our isolation from European difficulties is no longer a fact. We are a part of the world and compelled to carry a share of its burdens. This doctrine has been a great feature of American diplomatic history for a century. In the minds of many, a League of Nations means the giving up of his historic policy, but Professor Hall has shown that it is essentially akin to the policy laid down in the covenant. As citizens we have talked a good deal about the Monroe Doctrine without really knowing what it means. In a hundred years new connotations have come into its phraseology and the duty of a citizen is to know what his country is holding out as a world policy. Professor Hall has added a readable, analytic book to the series that will help the American to get a wider view of our world policy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Great War Dealing Particularly With Its Military and Diplomatic Aspects, and the Part Played in It By, the United StatesThe purpose of this volume is to offer the general reader an outline story of the War. In another book, The Strategy of the Great War, I have endeavoured to interpret the struggle in the broader sense-as a singular and enormously interesting departure from previous mili tary experience - due to the revolutionary conditions introduced by a sudden reversion to rigid positional, or trench warfare. The strategy of the war, determined in part by the military policies of the belligerents, but in still larger part by conditions over which the general staffs had little control, is a study in itself. In this book the purely strategical aspects of the war are discussed only in so far as it is necessary to establish the truer-relation of battles and campaigns to one another and to the ultimate result; The main idea is to give a clear and accurate running account of the war's origin and progress.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on The Vital Issues of the War, runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been Visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, Wlth only the slight revision de sirable for publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War: Its Causes and Consequences The age is revolutionary. The present is an epoch in the world's history of transition - a sort of moral exodus of the nations - which has lasted now some three centuries; and no stability in governments anywhere, much less here, can be looked for until the passage from the old regime to the new has been completed. To a close observer, the social ebullition in this coun try has long been of a threatening character. From the birth of our government, its elements have been in an uneasy state; and the bosom of society has more than once been agitated by the throes of coming convulsions. The time has arrived for these inevitable disturbances, so long concealed, to manifest their dangerous activity. An open rupture is at last reached; and however it may be allayed temporarily, will be again and again renewed until the foundations of society are broken up, or the principles which now lie at its base are extruded, or so modified by the introduction of others that their excesses will be entirely counteracted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Navy In these days, when efficiency is demanded in every occupation, young readers can readily understand that, where forces are even, Victories in war come about, as a rule, not because one Side is so much braver or more patriotic than the other, but because one Side does better thinking and better Shooting. Now the modern historical spirit is based upon research and guided by impartial inquiry, and the application of modern methods gives a broader View than the Older' naval histories which emphasized blood and smoke and victory, and exalted one side at the expense of the other. The modern view-point adds much to the picture, for it shows not only the pre-eminent influence of brains, science, discipline, and target practice, but also the vital importance of freedom from political influence, and the high part which sea power plays in general history. It is certain that the splendid record of our navy will gain in brilliancy when set against the larger background. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of War "The Biology of War" was written in German, by a German, for Germans, written since the outbreak of war, in the German fortress of Graudenz in which the author was imprisoned. If the German Government could have had its way, the book would never have seen the light, at any rate not so long as the war lasted; but by a happy chance the manuscript was conveyed to Switzerland, where it was brought out by the leading German-Swiss publishing firm, Orell Fussli of Zurich. When the book appeared, it was promptly barred from Germany, the reasons for which will soon be obvious to anyone who reads it; and the author was condemned to five months imprisonment in a common jail. At present he is interned in Germany, and carefully watched. Indeed, were it not for his position, he would probably still be in prison like Liebknecht, or would have shared the fate of Edith Cavell or Captain Fryatt. Dr. G. F. Nicolai was born in Berlin in 1872. Before the outbreak of war he was known throughout Germany as the leading heart specialist, in which capacity he had attended the German Empress, whom he is said to have saved from a troublesome malady. He also held the chair of physiology at Berlin University. He married a daughter of Admiralitasrat Buslay, and has one child, a daughter. Even before the war Dr. Nicolai was opposed to Prussian militarism, and when war broke out and Germany violated. Belgian neutrality, he openly protested.
