Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Briton's First Duty: The Case for Conscription It is no technical question that I propose to place before the reader. To look upon it in that light would be utterly to misunderstand the scope and purpose of this book. For I deal with a question which is not even, directly, a military or naval one at all. It is simply and solely a question of principle a question of plain duty to the Sovereign and the State a question that affects, not the soldier and the sailor, but every citizen of this great Empire; it is, in the highest sense of the word, a civilian question. The question whether every able-bodied white man throughout the United Kingdom - through out the Empire - ought to, and shall in future, perform the most fundamental and sacred duty of citizenship or not is one which he, in his millions, will have to answer, and no one else. At the present moment the air is full of Army Reform, as it always has been when the test of war has shown our military system to be ia adequate to our needs. The same delusive phrase will be used which has so often lulled us into a false security - a security from which our next awakening would be a far more terrible one than we have ever known in the past. Even as it is, no one can have failed to notice a singular want of earnestness in the public utterances of Ministers on the question of Army Reform. In spite of the lessons that this Empire should have learnt as to the futility of a policy of optimism, we fail to trace any serious effort on the part of either House of Parliament to add to the preparedness of Great Britain in view of possible dangers in the There can be no real and lasting Army Reform which does not start on the only possible sound basis for an Army, namely, a national one. Book Synopsis Builders of Empire by : Jessica L. Harland-Jacobs
Download or read book Builders of Empire written by Jessica L. Harland-Jacobs and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They built some of the first communal structures on the empire's frontiers. The empire's most powerful proconsuls sought entrance into their lodges. Their public rituals drew dense crowds from Montreal to Madras. The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons were quintessential builders of empire, argues Jessica Harland-Jacobs. In this first study of the relationship between Freemasonry and British imperialism, Harland-Jacobs takes readers on a journey across two centuries and five continents, demonstrating that from the moment it left Britain's shores, Freemasonry proved central to the building and cohesion of the British Empire. The organization formally emerged in 1717 as a fraternity identified with the ideals of Enlightenment cosmopolitanism, such as universal brotherhood, sociability, tolerance, and benevolence. As Freemasonry spread to Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australasia, and Africa, the group's claims of cosmopolitan brotherhood were put to the test. Harland-Jacobs examines the brotherhood's role in diverse colonial settings and the impact of the empire on the brotherhood; in the process, she addresses issues of globalization, supranational identities, imperial power, fraternalism, and masculinity. By tracking an important, identifiable institution across the wide chronological and geographical expanse of the British Empire, Builders of Empire makes a significant contribution to transnational history as well as the history of the Freemasons and imperial Britain.
Book Synopsis The History of England: From the Britons of Early Times to King John by : David Hume
Download or read book The History of England: From the Britons of Early Times to King John written by David Hume and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hume's 'The History of England: From the Britons of Early Times to King John' is a comprehensive account of England's early history, written in a clear and concise style that reflects Hume's philosophical background. Hume's approach to history is marked by his skepticism and critical analysis, making this work a valuable resource for understanding the political and social dynamics of early English society. This volume covers a wide range of topics, including the Roman conquest of Britain, the Anglo-Saxon era, and the Norman invasion, providing readers with a detailed overview of the country's formative years. David Hume, a prominent Scottish philosopher of the 18th century, was deeply interested in politics and history, which is reflected in his decision to undertake this ambitious historical project. His unique perspective as a philosopher allows him to offer insightful commentary on the events and figures that shaped England's history, making this book a must-read for anyone interested in the subject. I highly recommend 'The History of England' to readers who are looking for a scholarly and engaging introduction to the early history of England. Hume's meticulous research and critical analysis make this work a valuable addition to any history enthusiast's library.
Book Synopsis Imperial Vancouver Island by : J. F. Bosher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the century 1850-1950 Vancouver Island attracted Imperial officers and other Imperials from India, the British Isles, and elsewhere in the Empire. Victoria was the main British port on the north-west Pacific Coast for forty years before the city of Vancouver was founded in 1886 to be the coastal terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. These two coastal cities were historically and geographically different. The Island joined Canada in 1871 and thirty-five years later the Royal Navy withdrew from Esquimalt, but Island communities did not lose their Imperial character until the 1950s."--P. [4] of cover.
Book Synopsis Race and Imperial Defence in the British World, 1870–1914 by : John C. Mitcham
Download or read book Race and Imperial Defence in the British World, 1870–1914 written by John C. Mitcham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive account of the cultural and racial origins of the imperial security partnership between Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Drawing on research from every corner of the globe, John C. Mitcham merges studies of diplomacy, defense strategy, and politics with a wider analysis of society and popular culture, and in doing so, poses important questions about race, British identity, and the idea of empire. The book examines diverse subjects such as the South African War, the Anglo-German naval arms race, Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the birth of the Boy Scout Movement, and positions them within the larger phenomenon of British race patriotism that permeated the fin de siècle. Most importantly, Mitcham demonstrates how this shared concept of 'Britishness' gradually led to closer relations between the self-governing states of the empire, and ultimately resulted in a remarkably unified effort during the First World War.
Book Synopsis Women's Identities at War by : Susan R. Grayzel
Download or read book Women's Identities at War written by Susan R. Grayzel and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few moments in history when the division between the sexes seems as "natural" as during wartime: men go off to the "war front," while women stay behind on the "home front." But the very notion of the home front was an invention of the First World War, when, for the first time, "home" and "domestic" became adjectives that modified the military term "front." Such an innovation acknowledged the significant and presumably new contributions of civilians, especially women, to the war effort. Yet, as Susan Grayzel argues, throughout the war, traditional notions of masculinity and femininity survived, primarily through the maintenance of--and indeed reemphasis on--soldiering and mothering as the core of gender and national identities. Drawing on sources that range from popular fiction and war memorials to newspapers and legislative debates, Grayzel analyzes the effects of World War I on ideas about civic participation, national service, morality, sexuality, and identity in wartime Britain and France. Despite the appearance of enormous challenges to gender roles due to the upheavals of war, the forces of stability prevailed, she says, demonstrating the Western European gender system's remarkable resilience.
Book Synopsis English Language as Hydra by : Vaughan Rapatahana
Download or read book English Language as Hydra written by Vaughan Rapatahana and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In far too many places, the worldwide trade in English-language teaching, testing and publishing has become a self-perpetuating, self-congratulating, neocolonial monster ... a veritable multi-headed Hydra. Too often the English language industry aggressively promotes itself as some sort of “uplifting”, “essential”, “proper” or even “better” means of communication than any other language. Unfortunately, its relentless global outreach is taking place at the direct expense, and the active denigration, of local and regional languages – not to mention individual identities. English Language as Hydra brings together the voices of linguists, literary figures and teaching professionals in a wide-ranging exposé of this monstrous Hydra in action on four continents. It provides a showcase of the diverse and powerful impacts that this ever-evolving, gluttonous beast has had on so many non-English language cultures - as well as the surreptitious, drug-like ways in which it can infiltrate individual psyches.
