Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,7, University of Osnabrück, language: English, abstract: With this piece of work I want to explain the British School System. I will start with a brief overview on the history of British schools from the medieval times and then show the development of the modern education System from World War II until now. Talking of the development of the British Education System terms like ‘pendulum of curricula control’ are often used as the state’s control on the school curriculum grew and shrunk over the period from 1862 until 1988. I will try to describe the course that this ‘pendulum’ took. [...]

Book Synopsis Engines of Privilege by : David Kynaston
Download or read book Engines of Privilege written by David Kynaston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous, compelling and balanced examination of the British public school system and the inequalities it entrenches. Private schools are institutions that children who are already privileged attend and have those privileges further entrenched, almost certainly for life, through a high-quality, richly-resourced education. The Engines of Privilege contends that in a society that mouths the virtues of equality of opportunity, of fairness and of social cohesion, the continuation of this educational apartheid amounts to an act of national self-harm that does all of us serious damage. Intrinsic to any vision of the future of Britain has to be the nature of our educational system. Yet the quality of conversation on the issue of private education remains surprisingly sterile, patchy and highly subjective. Accessible, evidence-based and inclusive, Engines of Privilege aims to kick-start a long overdue national debate. Clear, vigorous prose is combined with forensic analysis to compelling effect, illuminating the painful contrast between the importance of private schools in British society and the near-absence of serious, policy-making debate, above all on the left.

Download or read book The Academies Programme written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An academy is a new type of school that is publicly funded, supported by one or more sponsors and operates independently of the local authority. Their aim is to raise achievement standards in deprived areas by replacing poorly performing schools. By 2006 46 were operating and there are plans for 200 academies to be opened by 2010. This report looks at the capital and running costs, new academy buildings, academic performance, their contribution to tackling social depravation, and the management of the programme. The value for money assessment is that academic progress means that the Academy programme is on track to deliver good value for money. However to achieve this goal it needs to pay attention both to managing the capital costs and the sustainability of funding and performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of the Lesson Books of the National Board of Education in Ireland in the nineteenth century. The author contextualizes the books used in national schools as well as across the wider British Empire: in doing so, he highlights the influence of the religious, social, political and cultural realms of the time. Firmly grounding the volume in its historical context, the author goes on to explore the contemporary moral climate and social influences, including imperialism, morality, rote-learning and socialization. Through meticulous analysis of each Lesson Book, the author traces the evolution of education in Ireland as a reflection of contemporary society, as it changes and transforms in line with cultural, religious and social changes. This pioneering and comprehensive volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of education in Ireland as well as education in the British Empire more widely.
