Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would be unthinkable now to omit early female pioneers from any survey of photography's history in the Western world. Yet for many years the gendered language of American, British and French photographic literature made it appear that women's interactions with early photography did not count as significant contributions. Using French and English photo journals, cartoons, art criticism, novels, and early career guides aimed at women, this volume will show why and how early photographic clubs, journals, exhibitions, and studios insisted on masculine values and authority, and how Victorian women engaged with photography despite that dominant trend. Focusing on the period before 1890, when women were yet to develop the self-assurance that would lead to broader recognition of the value of their work, this study probes the mechanisms by which exclusion took place and explores how women practiced photography anyway, both as amateurs and professionals. Challenging the marginalization of women’s work in the early history of photography, this is essential reading for students and scholars of photography, history and gender studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, the publishing industries in Britain and the United States underwent dramatic expansions and reorganization that brought about an increased traffic in books and periodicals around the world. Focusing on adventure fiction published from 1899 to 1919, Patrick Scott Belk looks at authors such as Joseph Conrad, H.G. Wells, Conan Doyle, and John Buchan to explore how writers of popular fiction engaged with foreign markets and readers through periodical publishing. Belk argues that popular fiction, particularly the adventure genre, developed in ways that directly correlate with authors’ experiences, and shows that popular genres of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emerged as one way of marketing their literary works to expanding audiences of readers worldwide. Despite an over-determined print space altered by the rise of new kinds of consumers and transformations of accepted habits of reading, publishing, and writing, the changes in British and American publishing at the turn of the twentieth century inspired an exciting new period of literary invention and experimentation in the adventure genre, and the greater part of that invention and experimentation was happening in the magazines.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Photography, Vol. 21 Mr. King has had two dialysers made after his own model, and, as he has left one of them at our cihoe to be used in our own experi ments and also to show to such as are interested, we here give a de scription of the instrument. A dialyser, we may state. Is a vessel made of any kind of material that cannot be acted upon by the liquid in which it is to be placed or which is to be contained in it, but it must be a vessel without a bottom it may, in short, consist of a deep frame alone. But it must have a bottom of a certain kind, and upon this depends its value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Photography, 1890, Vol. 37 As it is perfectly well known that hydrochloric acid has little or no effect on glass, I think I have demonstrated the facts as to the action of mercury and such mercuric compounds as are used in toning. That action may be partial, but in no way can the efiect ever be as it has been described. The imperceptible vapourisation of mercury at ordinary temperatures has no effect on ordinary glass, as ma be proved by the fact that a wooden bowl of mercury, holding a out 120 pounds, which has been in use for over twenty years, and when covered it was so by a bit of plate glass which, for a wonder, was not broken, when I examined it to-day, I found that the surface, save for accidental scratches, is just as it came from the factory.
