Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homeopathy, 1862, Vol. 20 IN the British Journal of Homoeopathy for January, 1861, I published a few remarks embodying my experience of the effects of Hydrastis in cancer. I then stated that the success of the remedy had been variable in my hands, but that it had been sufficient to lead me to form an opposite conclusion to that expressed by Dr. Hastings in the April, 1860, number of the Journal, in which he said, in no single instance has it effected a cure, nor even appeared to check the disease. I also stated that I had. Found the Hydrastis exercise a marked influence in relieving the pain of cancer, while, at the same time, it had improved the general health of the patient. I further mentioned that very sudden prostration of strength had accompanied the continued use of the remedy beyond a certain point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homeopathy, Vol. 42: Jan 1st, 1884 Of late, the curentur having been espoused and defended by my colleague Dr. Dudgeon, attention has been directed to it, and much displeasure expressed by the more ardent Hahnemannians at the proposed return to it. I must leave them to settle the question with the master they profess to follow. To avoid misconception, however, let me refer to what is said in the United States Medical Investigator for March 24th, 1883, by Dr. Reinke, of Jamaica. He writes Why do some of our doctors say curentur Are they not sure? He evidently thinks that we intend the verb to be rendered by cure in the subj unc tive mood likes may be cured by likes whereas we employ the phrase, as Hahnemann did, to mean let likes be treated by likes, the use of the subjunctive mood in an imperative sense being familiar in Latin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homeopathy, 1852, Vol. 10 The Romans being a people who owed their existence to phy sicsl power, and grew to extensive sway by the exercise of temperance, moderation, activity and valour, little required and little valued the art of healing, and, accordingly, they were slow to receive it; and when in later years it found its way into Rome, along with other arts of the Greeks, it excited the jea lousy and apprehension of those who, in a corrupter age, desired to retain or recover the simplicity of their earlier history, when the healing of diseases was sought rather by the performance of religious rites or devout attendance in the temples of the gods than by any scientific methods. Of this form of medical treat ment by divination, the Etruscans, a Grecian colony, may be considered the founders, and to them are to be ascribed the various temples of Apollo, Esculapius and others, to which the sick resorted in the hope of divine direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homeopathy, 1853, Vol. 11A story is told of the worthy bishop that he Often declared that if he could stand upon the top of St. Paul's, and speak with a voice that all the world could hear. He would say: Drink Tar-water. This enthusiastic admiration of its heal ing virtues, was, doubtless, unadvisedly fixed upon a Single remedy; but we shall, I think, discover from this book, that the views and feelings of the bishop were such, that, if trans ferred from one to all homeopathic remedies, they would then be neither exaggerated nor misplaced.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homeopathy, Vol. 37 Residence in the heart of the resinous atmosphere Of Arcachon is suitable in phthisis of the irritative form, with predominance of the nervous temperament, either primitive or acquired and is unsuitable when the lymphatic tempera ment of a torpid form predominates. Whence we get the final and more general formula - the action of a pine atmo sphere is sedative to the nervous system. Thus, chil dren affected with chronic bronchitis have generally derived benefit from their sojourn at Arcachon. But here, again, it is especially among those who were of a nervous temperament that the quickest and best results have been observed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homoeopathy, 1877, Vol. 35 We gave in our first number for 1876 a full account of the history of the design of this Convention, and an outline of its intended working. We have not recorded its actual assembling, because this had already been done by one of us in the Monthly Homoeopathic Review and to his account, as that of an actual attendant at the meeting, them was nothing to add. But in our present survey of homoeopathy in 1876 no event stands out before us in greater prominence, and we must briefly note its circum stances and results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Homeopathy, 1866, Vol. 24 The provings of medicines recorded by Professor J. Ch. G. Jorg in his Materials for a fittm'e Materia Medica, as also in No. 2 of his Critical Pamphlets, are free from most of the objections above made to Hahnemann. Jorg gives us statements of age, sex, temperament, constitution, manner of life of the persons experimented on, exact records of the dose each time of administration, chrono logical enumeration of resulting phenomena, and critical hints in the resumes which follow the enumeration of the results of the proving of each medicine. I allude to these elucidations of J org'a purposely, because they furnish, amongst other things, the proof that the statements of Hahnemann are not mere fictions (as Sachs says) but facts, of which any one may easily convince himself who will compare Hahnemann's preamble to Opium in the Pure Materia Medica, 2nd edit., p. 278, with Jiirg, l. C., p. 437. Such a harmony of previous lies with the results of subse quent accurate investigations is really something more than strange.
