Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lavishly illustrated with seventy-four color plates and fifty black-and-white photographs and drawings, Never for Want of Powder tells the story of a world-class munitions factory constructed by the Confederacy in 1861, the only large-scale permanent building project undertaken by a government often characterized as lacking modern industrial values. In this comprehensive examination of the powder works, five scholars--a historian, physicist, curator, architectural historian, and biographer--bring their combined expertise to the task of chronicling gunpowder production during the Civil War. In doing so, they make a major contribution to understanding the history of wartime technology and Confederate ingenuity. Early in the war President Jefferson Davis realized the Confederacy's need to supply its own gunpowder. Accordingly Davis selected Col. George Washington Rains to build a gunpowder factory. An engineer and West Point graduate, Rains relied primarily on a written pamphlet rather than on practical experience in building the powder mill, yet he succeeded in designing a model of efficiency and safety. He sited the facilities at Augusta, Georgia, because of the city's central location, canal transportation, access to water power, railroad facilities, and relative security from attack. As much a story of people as of machinery, Never for Want of Powder recounts the ingenuity of the individuals involved with the project. A cadre of talented subordinates--including Frederick Wright, C. Shaler Smith, William Pendleton, and Isadore P. Girardey--assisted Rains to a degree not previously appreciated by historians. This volume also documents the coordinated outflow of gunpowder and ammunition, and Rains's difficulty in preparing for the defense of Augusta. Today a lone chimney along the Savannah River stands as the only reminder of the munitions facility that once occupied that site. With its detailed reproductions of architectural and mechanical schematics and its expansive vista on the Confederacy, Never for Want of Powder restores the Augusta Powder Works to its rightful place in American lore.

Book excerpt: Every town has its lore, and Hamburg, South Carolina, was no exception. In its early days, upstate farmers brought their crops to ship or sell and shop for supplies in this bustling waterfront town situated along the Savannah River. Although many accomplishments of historic proportions were achieved in the town, at least part of what we thought we knew about Hamburg may not really be what happened there. In a well-researched historical presentation, Barbara Seaborn leads others through the fascinating past of the former nineteenth century trading town founded by Henry Shultz that existed for over one hundred years. After detailing the town’s inception and early history, Seaborn reveals how, after the Civil War, the nearly empty Hamburg filled again when it became the new home for several hundred freed slaves, and then rose once more during the recovering postwar South, until events more than a decade later diminished the town that would eventually, despite its downfalls, create a lasting legacy. Monumental Legacy highlights the history of a former nineteenth century trading town that became a home for freed slaves, suffered racial and political violence during Reconstruction, and now inspires twenty-first century healing and correction. “Barbara Seaborn has done an accurate historical presentation of the town of Hamburg, South Carolina; its founder, Henry Shultz; and the important events that took place during the one hundred and eight years it existed as a town ...” —Milledge Murray, member and former president, Heritage Council of North Augusta

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Fall 2014 issue of Southern Cultures… From mullet fishing on Brown's Island to shrimping on the Gulf Coast, from recreation on the Great Lakes of the South to coastal tourism in the Sunbelt and tramping in the swampy lowlands of eastern NC, we take a look at tourism's vital role in regional economies and the challenges of conservation and sustainability. Also in this issue, Andrew W. Kahrl examines the Sunbelt's foundation, "plac[ing] the coast at the center of the story and seek[ing] to understand how beaches came to reflect and influence broader changes in the region's cultures and political economy." Christopher J. Manganiello details the rise of dams on the Savannah River, which now block the migration of shad and sturgeon. "What did the shoals look like when the lilies bloomed?" he asks. "And…what would it be like to witness the great shad migrations and fishing parties of the past?" Ian Draves addresses that question by exploring the Tennessee Valley Authority's impact on tourism, and John James Kaiser chronicles the battle over rate hikes and regulated energy from North Carolina's Southern Power Company (now Duke Energy). David Cecelski's annotated photo essay, "An Eye for Mullet," provides witness to Brown's Island Mullet Camp. The photos, taken by Charles Farrell in 1938, reflect a time when fish dealers in Morehead City, N.C., "loaded so many barrels of salt mullet on outbound freight cars that local people referred to the railroad as 'the Old Mullet Line.'" Bernard L. Herman and William Arnett offer another visual take on water through the work of artists including Lonnie Holley, Ronald Lockett, and Thornton Dial Jr. ALSO! Poetry by Patricia Smith; and a short recollection by Bland Simpson on the swamps of his youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the American South--a place with abundant rainfall--become embroiled in intrastate wars over water? Why did unpredictable flooding come to characterize southern waterways, and how did a region that seemed so rich in this all-important resource become derailed by drought and the regional squabbling that has tormented the arid American West? To answer these questions, policy expert and historian Christopher Manganiello moves beyond the well-known accounts of flooding in the Mississippi Valley and irrigation in the West to reveal the contested history of southern water. From the New South to the Sun Belt eras, private corporations, public utilities, and political actors made a region-defining trade-off: The South would have cheap energy, but it would be accompanied by persistent water insecurity. Manganiello's compelling environmental history recounts stories of the people and institutions that shaped this exchange and reveals how the use of water and power in the South has been challenged by competition, customers, constituents, and above all, nature itself.

Book excerpt: The story of James U. Jackson and the history of North Augusta are inseparable. In the 1800s, James U. Jackson was one of the youngest railroad officials in the country. As a boy, he dreamed of developing the area on the bluffs across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia. That dream became a reality in 1906, when the community of North Augusta was incorporated. Not only a man of vision, Jackson's energy, drive, and personality enabled him to secure financial backing from several cities for his business ventures. His interurban railway, one of the first in the South, contributed to the development of the area's resort hotel industry, which catered to many people from the North during the winter months. Today, North Augusta's riverfront development continues, distinguishing it as a strong and independent community. James U. Jackson's dream continues to prosper.
