Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bridgewater Book For some years before the Civil War in England there was a large migration of Puritans to New England, who lovingly transplanted many of their Cherished customs and even the names of the towns and villages where they had lived, so that their homes in this wilderness across the ocean might as much as possible remind them of their old homes in their mother land. Somersetshire had long been famous for its adventurous mariners and merchants, and the Puritans were numerous in this town and its neighborhood. It is said that our Taunton in Massachusetts was named in compliment to one of its early settlers, Miss Elizabeth Poole, who was born near the English Taunton; and it is probable that our Bridgewater, being settled soon after Taunton, was named on account of the home affection of some of its first inhabitants. Mitchells and Hoopers and Bryants and Allens were prominent citizens in the English town, these names being found in the lists of mayors and members of Parliament; and they are also familiar names in the history of our New England town. Its stories will vanish forever unless secured in this generation. This little book of mine is also a plea for the help of those who have materials about the town. It is a peculiar idea that tomorrow can be faced without trying to understand the past. The man with no roots is bound to repeat his ancestors' errors. In a few years I would like to publish a complete history of the town, hardbound and about 300 pages in length. Anything you can do to provide me with stories for it will be warmly received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Bridgewater in the Rebellion I shall not attempt to discuss the causes of the war, but shall commence with the Opening of the rebellion. The first call for tr00ps from Massachusetts was by a telegram from Senator Wilson to Governor Andrew, dated at Wash ington, April 15, 1861, requesting twenty companies to be sent to Washington immediately, and there mustered into the United States service. In the course of the day orders were received from the Secretary of War and Adjutant General of the United States, for two full regiments of the Massachusetts militia. Special Order N o. 14 was issued by Gov. Andrew the same day, directing 001. Jones of the Sixth Regiment, 001. Packard of the Fourth, Col. Wardrop of the Third, and Col. Monroe of the Eighth, to muster their respective commands on the Common, in Boston, at once, in compliance with a requisition from the President of the United States. This order was sent by mail, and also by messengers, to the several colonels, who resided at Lowell, New Bedford, Quincy, and Lynn. The companies composing these regiments were scattered through the cities and towns of Plymouth, Bristol, Norfolk, Essex, and Middlesex counties. Col. Wardrop, of the Third Regi ment, notified his company commanders, who, with the aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridgewater in the Later Days: Being a Succeeding Volume to the Ancient Borough of Bridgewater Again I have to express my thanks for much help received. The Municipal authorities have again permitted me to use their documents, and the Town Clerk and Mr. R. J. Letherby have been exceedingly courteous in giving me access to them. I am in debted to my friend Mr. Richard Cooke, of Detling, for many suggestions in the plan of the book. Several documents and papers have been lent to me by Mr. Edward Trevor, Mr. A. J. Coles, Mr. Maurice Page, Mr. Alderman Pollard, Mr. W. H. Kitch, Mr. H. E. Vine, Mr. W. H. Smith, Capt ]obson, Mr. Harden, the Rev. H. Butler, the Rev. H. Trotman, and others. An old inhabitant of the town, Mr. Henry Hayward, now eighty-five years of age, has, too, given me much information drawn from his long personal acquaintance with the place. So also has Mr. Greedy, who has seen ninety-six years of Bridgwater life. Mr. Trevor's documents have been specially useful, notably in enabling me to fix the exact site of the old Castle, which has been drawn upon the map which I owe to the kindness of Mr. A. B. Cottam, our Diocesan Surveyor. I desire also to acknowledge my thanks to Messrs. Brendon Son, who have taken extreme care with the print ing of the two volumes, and to the publishers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the 250th Anniversary of Old Bridgewater: At West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, June 13, 1903 The inception of the plan for celebrating the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the town of Old Bridgewater was expressed in a resolution adopted by the Old Bridgewater Historical Society on the ninth of May, 1903. In accordance with a request of the Trustees of this Society, at a meeting held at the Memorial Building, West Bridgewater, on the fourteenth of January, 1905, preliminary measures were taken for a suitable celebration of the anniversary by the appointment of a provisional Anniversary Committee consisting of the following members: Hon. - Benjamin W. At the annual meeting of the Old Bridgewater Historical Society held on the twelfth of January, 1906, the report of this committee was presented and adopted and the several commit tees were empowered to enlarge their membership. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Borough of Bridgewater in the County of Somerset This book is an attempt to set forth some of the incidents of the past history of a town whose antiquity is great, and whose story has been singularly varied. From the early part of the thirteenth century up to the close of the seventeenth the place throbbed with energy; they were five centuries whose characteristic, here, was action. It is with this period, in the main, that the following pages are concerned. From the dawn of the eighteenth century, and onwards, a quieter mood crept over Bridgwater. To chronicle this later period would require a separate volume, and entirely different treatment. It is therefore excluded from the scope of the book. Perhaps another hand may some day take up the task. The difficulty has lain chiefly in selecting from the abundance of documentary and other evidence which has been available. A vast number of notes, carefully prepared, have had to be omitted by reason of the need of keeping the book within the due limit of size. A possible objection might be taken to the title, for although the town is always spoken of as the Ancient Borough, it was created a county by Henry VIII when he raised Henry Daubeney to the earldom of Bridgwater. This creation, so far as I know, has never been annulled, and presumably it exists still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
